Hi
I have been trying to use my Vagcom unit to Program a new Key FOB for my 1998 Beetle TDI. I do not have a working remote only my Valet Key. I have tried to use the procedure which I have found on Youtube which goes into Adaptation and with a key (my Valet key since I do not have a working key FOB) and I am unsuccessful. Can anyone help me with my Key Programming?

This is a scan which I ran just before attempting to Program my new key FOB. It shows an '01179 - Incorrect Key Programming
35-00 - -' line but as I had mentioned in my post I do not have a working Key FOB. I took the Blade out of my ONLY remote (which died recently) and attached it to the New FOB and turned on the Ignition with that. I have a working Valet Key and a working Blade from my old working FOB. I have not used any functions other than Autoscan with my VagCom unit. I simply went to Central Convenience and with the old blade in the Ignition and turned to the on position I went through the Adaptation section of the VagCom menu and picked the 1 key option and proceeded to hold the Open Button on the new Key FOB for 3 seconds etc etc. No joy.

Yes I forgot to mention that before. Also that was the exact video I followed. I have a follow up question as well. Could I have a faulty Control Module and how would I check for that? Not sure how I hit that Like but it was unintentional.
OK Should I be able to use the VCDS adaptation procedure to program a FOB if I do not have a working FOB? I do not have a working FOB so I cannot test to see if I have a faulty Control Module. Can someone weigh in to help me with this problem?

Yes, I can't think of any reason why a working fob should be needed.

Where did you get the "new" fob?

Did you observe the correct carrier frequency? There's 315MHz for North America and 434 for the rest of the world, IIRC.

I really do not know. I bought it from the USA. I will try to get that information tomorrow. Thanks for the Tip.

I have contacted the supplier and they assure me that it is a 315Mhz FOB. Thank you for this heads up, I never would have thought to even ask this question. :)

On that year should be manual procedure.
One key, that is able to start the car,in the ignition - ON position and the second key in the driver door lock. Turn and hold to lock position for 10 sec. You should hear the horn sound. Still holding on to lock position press unlock button once. Again, the horn should beep. Take the keys out and try..

Also what part number on the remote do you have? Has to be the right one otherwise you cannot program it..
Good luck

It all depend what part number you have on remote .
Is it possible to see part number ?

1998-2001 is one remote (Part number 1J0 959 753 F or T) Ending with "F" was old round shape , "T" is square shape , "F" is discontinue from Dealer , only can find it online.
2002-2003 is (Part number 1J0 959 753 AM or DC), and they both 315Mhz
So if you have remote form 2002-2003 it will not work in your car .

On this yaer model VCDS will program it with out any problems, do not need manual procedure, I have done it 100 times.
