Remember the '77 VW T2 microbus that appeared to have mostly survived the California Palisades Fire? Here's the story on its restoration ...

After fire, before restoration:

When the snow is too deep for blowing (likely in the Rockies?), just fire up the Cat ...

Nice machines. The thrower/blower that I observed in the Italian Alps would make these look like toys. The auger section had to be at least 20' tall. I was impressed. The mountain areas that get 3-6 ft. of snow at a time must be an interesting place to live in Winter. You probably need a month's worth of food/fuel to get by. Even with a snowmobile it's a long, cold, windy drive to the nearest store which can take hours one-way.

I hear ya... It was quite a few years ago. If I can find it I will definitely post the pic or YOU could fly me over next week and I'll get a current pic... ;)

Maybe this pick will do while I'm looking for the Italian mean machine... :D

That guy is incredibly luck he didn't move two feet further forward. With how that (steel beam?) pancaked his car, he would have been crushed dead if it had hit the passenger section.

In anticipation of a transmission fluid change for my 2024 RS5, I thought I would start sourcing some parts (pan and fluid). I realize I'm really early on the timeline and mileage, and the vehicle has a warranty for a few more years, but I enjoy the hunt. I plan on changing the fluid at about 40K. Anyway, I received the pan from a Genuine Audi parts source: AudiUSAparts.com .

I also purchased one from a trusted seller on ebay; his listing stated "Genuine Audi ZF Transmission pan". This seller has very good reviews and 100% feedback and it was a very good price (wholesale) for this brand new - genuine part.

I received this (ebay) pan first, it was in the factory box with a vw/audi PN label on it. I inspected the pan and noticed NO Audi PN on it (??), I also noticed no Four rings logo either - anywhere (??) I started to be a bit suspicious. The pan also had a "brushed" look to the surface ; as if someone had taken some 000 steel wool to the inside and outside surfaces (???). I started to think that I had been taken advantage of , but this didn't make sense considering this sellers reputation (private seller, not a store).
I thought I would wait before taking any potential action as the Audi USA parts pan is due in a couple of days and I would simply compare the two.

The Audi USA pan arrived and I closely inspected the two parts ; they were Identical ! (see pictures)
Same ZF markings / logo , same Hengst manufacturer logo, even the Same brushed finish!! They were absolutely identical. And, no Audi markings or PN anywhere on either item.

I even raised my vehicle and inspected under it and could see a section of the pan ; it was the same: same ZF mark, same Hengst logo, and even that lightly brushed surface appearance!

So, I thought I would post this observation since most (I thought all) Audi parts have the four rings logo and PN cast into the part. This Audi part does not and possibly other Brand vehicles as well. Audi part Number: 0D5-398-009-C

As a side note @Uwe , I remember recently watching a Mopar YT video where the owner was doing a fluid and pan maintenance change and the owner mentioned in the video that he was using all genuine Mopar parts. The marking on his pan was a different manufacturer. The name FiltrAn was on the pan (time~6:00 and 6:30 "made in USA" FiltrAn).

Personally, I would not do it until the car was out of warranty -- which happens at 50,000 miles?

Mopar (FCA/Stellantis) builds quite a few ZF HP8s under license here in the USA. I believe all the ones behind their ubiquitous 3.6L "Pentastar" V6 engines are domestically built. I know the one in my truck, behind my 3.0 diesel was built in Germany though.

Right, I won't touch it until the warranty is up and even a bit after that. Yes, I believe the warranty to be four years or 50K miles. For some reason , I thought it was 3 years, 30K.

FWIW, OE VW/Audi and most other mfgs. require that suppliers selling to the aftermarket remove all OE brand I.D. That is why you will often see OE VW/Audi parts with the VW/Audi logos machined off. With a stamping like an oil pan they just remove the brand logo insert from the stamping die or it's a secondary operation from the pan stamping. Many metallic parts are also laser etched these days so it's easy to delete this means of OE brand identification on a component.

I have a theory that the difference between having (or not) the Audi/VW logo comes to quality control. One time I saw a comment on a YouTube video about this subject where someone commented that worked in a Bosch factory who made injectors for the Volkswagen Group.

The assembly line was the same but in quality control, VW only bought injectors with a +- 7 bar of difference to the nominal value, for Bosch the limit was +- 11 bar.

Less that 7 bars of difference? The part gets the VW logos and goes to VW factories or to Volkswagen OTLG (the company responsible for the group logistics).

More than 7 bars but less than 11 bars? The part is sold through aftermarket channels.

Mora than 11 bars? The part is rejected.

Both can be true, a lot of it has to do with the wording of each contract. Back before I worked for a well known diagnostic tool manufacturer, I sourced parts from different suppliers directly instead of going through regular dealer/end user supply chains. For example, by accident I ended up buying a larger (4 digit) quantity of seat heating relays (Golf III era) directly from their manufacturer. Quality was they were promised to be identical, all they did was getting rid of excessive stock VW never called in. That said, each part had the logo's filed off manually by some poor soul.

In the end, the exact conditions differ for each supplier and part but generally both tolerances as well as non-quality related concerns play a role.
