Unsurprisingly, I haven't find a single story that mentions the nationality or ethnicity of the 25 year old "suspect".
Some reports state he is "a UK citizen of Somali descent".
"A nutcase" would be more appropriate, as everything else is just incidental.

Why surprise @NZDubNurd ? Autel was formed by many former Launch Tech engineers. Launch had been in trouble for doing such things (Ford sued them) so why wouldn't Autel also do so?

When Uwe showed the article to me today, I said, "$33Million is not enough to repay for the damage caused."

We live it too. If we could find an entity to sue for all the clones, what number would/should we ask? The difficulty is that we could never do so in China where the clones are made. Been there and tried to see what might be involved. Few Western companies have had success.

Mind, I don't bash China for these things. In their culture, there is no understanding of Intellectual Property ownership. In their culture, if you make it, others can copy it. So they do. Is it right by West standards? No. But in the East, it does not even raise an eyebrow.

Individual Chinese may have the integrity - and many I have met do - to abide by Western thought on theft of IP. However, many in China are still wanting to succeed as Western people do and they will cut corners to achieve their goals.

China is still evolving and a very interesting place. I wonder what they will be in another 30-50 years. It will be hard for the West to keep up with them. They are learning and adapting very quickly.

It's not a bad way to make money... steal something and blatantly sell it in front of the original owners!

At least the VCDS clones usually have enough bugs built in, that ONE day, someone finds them :D Like that version that adds an extra digit into BCM codings...

I do not think that's likely to happen in the foreseeable future. They're talking about failing cars during the biennial emissions test, and flashing an ECU back to stock every two years strikes me as unlikely to exceed the write cycles that the flash can endure.

-Uwe-
Although this is an old post, and my reply is not directly related to the flashing of ECU and hardware with regards the police, the police however over here in the UK many years ago had the electronic facilities in their cars to stop a public vehicle while it was being driven. The problem with it was that some police are pure idiots and hungry for power. One couple had their car disabled while driving by the police, who stupidly stopped the public vehicle in an "Unmarked" train crossing. The driver could not start or move the car and the train killed them. It was big news over here at the time and it was agreed by Government then that the police will not be given that ability again.
