Been shopping for Weihnachtspyramiden today and it got me thinking about the cuckoo clock I had imported for my dear Oma.
We recently restored it to full working order, and I'd like to have a quality pendulum wall clock myself.

Must haves
  • mechanical movement
  • solid wood, no cheap veneers
  • striking (chiming) movement
  • traditional look - regulator or craftsman style

Can anyone recommend a company to look at ? Thanks -Jake

Well I bought the clock from local family owned business in operation since 1958 and it should be delivered next week.
Quite pleased that it's 100% German made and the chime night-time auto shut-off follows the proper standards :p

Think of them like watches... only bigger :p

Grandfather clocks and other types do nothing for me, but a good regulator is a masterpiece to me.

Let me be the first person to officially call you a Horologist! ;) (A joke in my office, since my assistant is an officer in the local chapter and collects/restores antique wall clocks using the original construction methods and parts.)

When you get too old to see the tiny mechanisms in watches, you'll appreciate the beauty of wall clocks because the parts are bigger..... :D

LOL, why thank you. :D
Just had a serious facepalm moment thinking about chatting with my, ehhhh shall we say 'less than wordly', family over the holidays.

Q: So what have you been up to?
A: Oh I'm reading up on and been involved with the local chapter of horologists - even got my national membership...
<insert laughter and strange looks here>

Then again most of the men in my family belong to the IOOB [International Order Of Old Bastards]

This didn't just fall in my shopping buggy by accident today !

Q: If a Proctologist is a doctor of...um...inaudible mumble, then what is a Horologist?

A1: Who you callin' a 'ho!?!?!

A2: A Clock Doctor :)

A3: Do they make a cream for that? :D

A few weeks ago, I bought pair of those aftermarket LED "halo" rings that people are retrofitting into their headlights to use as work lights on my 3D printer. I used to be able to solder SMC packages by hand in my younger days, but last month I was having problems even seeing 0.1" headers to put jumpers on them without a flashlight and squinting.....

Nice looking clock! I expect you'll calibrate it correctly... as I thought, some nerd had the process figured out already. :)

There's an official standard for night-time shut-off? Wow, Germans have rules for everything.

Oh boy... that looks like a neat project.
I'm going to calibrate it to within something reasonable, but not go too crazy

Yes, of course we do !
My Irish half tempers that considerably though....

US made movements chime from 0700-2245, German made movements are an hour earlier.
At least they are for Hermle movements - not certain of other makers.

Wow am I glad the clock folks are hand delivering it tomorrow.

The box on the bottom is the weights for it, the box on top was coffee....

She has arrived

The owner of the clock shop hand delivered the Hermle today - about a 2 hour drive for him. [he drives a VW ]
He unpacked it, and spent a half hour reviewing the whole thing with me.
That's service you just don't find many places anymore...

You're probably all sick of hearing about it, but I'm very pleased, and will end the thread with a couple more pictures.

What sort of VW did that thing fit in? :)

The one with the WV badge on the nose instead of the Dodge one.

Got all excited to give my VCDS spiel and then...

So ya thought VAG fluids were expensive ?

$4/ml - yes, milliliter
It is by no means the most expensive one, and thankfully this type does not have an expiration date !

That's a standard 12 oz coffee mug next to it.

Ehh... I may build this after all now that I've seen what they cost....

My goodness, that's approaching the cost of OEM inkjet printer ink. I hope you know what you're getting into with this clock.
