Audi S5 2008 4.2 issues at startup

I have a 2008 S5 4.2 in the shop witch im having issues figuring out.

Every single time you start the car it idles like crap ... Missfires ( CEL flashing sometimes, sometimes not ) runs really rough ... The customer even said he saw the EPC light come on ( I havent ) ... Sometyimes the CEL comes on sometimes not

Heres the deal ... I dont have any significant codes in the ECU memory

The second you clear the codes ... the car runs like a charm ... The customer bought a cheap code reader off ebay and he literally has to turn the key ON .. clear the codes ... every single time he wants to drive the car or else the cars feels like its running on 4 out of 8 cylinders

The only hint i have so far is this ... If i start the car without clearing the codes .. the car is running like crap ... the maf readings are 10+g/sec as opposed to ~4g/sec when the car is running normaly

Also the cars starts up are runs relatively well with the MAF disconnected ... ESP, parking brake, etc light come on but you DO NOT have to clear the codes to get the car to run

I dont have a spare maf handy to test ... and the new maf is non returnable

Any inputs would be really appreciated

Time to learn your basics and troubleshoot stuff correctly and not guess things like this.
Post a scan to see firmware levels and post logs with VCDS of the long and short term trim.u

FYI: When you reset the DTC's you are erasing the deviation learned of trim adaptions!

JPPSG and read the how to threads.......
Check wiring to MAF, al fuses and for obstructions of FOD!

The customer told me he started having issues after he changed the battery ... It is NOT an OEM battery .. it is an AGM aftermarket replacement ... i coded : Address 19 channel 004 to the best of my knowledge ... you can find the current status of battery at the end of my log

the log was taken with car idling and running rough

As for unmeetered air ... Wouldnt you think i would detect it even after i clear the trim deviation and the car is running well

Can you confirm the battery was properly coded ... Its not an OEM battery ( the battery was changed by an other shop ... i only coded it ) ... i cheated by changing one digit of the serial number since its not oem ... would it be worth it to try an oem battery?

Also i should get the proper wiring diagram today since i only have acces to Mitchell's wiring diagram right now ... if i have to i will subscribe to erwin ... i really want to solve this issue

Follow the trouble tree and SVM the ecu at dealer as per the RTFB.
Install a correct battery with proper adaption performed and verification of the charging system.

I don't help retrofits of any kind.......and I absolutely dislike pervasive rationalization I find with induced FOD.

Want it right? Do it right .....it's that simple by JPPSG and following a proper methodical method.

Trace false air as aforementioned in the respective bank of deviation.

Im Back !! Sorry about the delay ... I spare you the details

Thanks for the literature lessons Jack ... i still prefer fuel injection lessons

Long story short ... I got the proper OEM battery and coded it

Fix the vacuum leaks i found ... few lines where suspicious ... suction jet pump was bad ... still has a bit from the intake ... smoked it .. smoke coming from the intake flap shaft seals and from around the seam of the intake ... i tried opening it to reseal it ... it did not happen .. i was never able to split it and since i dint want to break it i left it as is

Anyhow ... I dont think false air ever was my main issue ... it did help since there was defenitly some fasle air ... but im still having pretty much the same issue ... i cant run the car until after i clear the fuel trims .. once cleared i can run the car for ever as long as i dont shut it off ... when it is shut off ... i have to clear the codes or its undrivable ... if there was such a big vacuum leak to cause both bank deviating 25% + ... the car would start running bad again after a few minutes as the car would go into closed loop NO ? Im 99% sure ( i might be wrong ) the cars goes into closed loop after i clear the codes ... i see the fuel trims are normal +/- 5% ... i see the o2 voltage fluctuating on the 4 sensors as they should


I noticed key ON ... engine off i am reading 3.5V on fuse 5 ... i pull the fuse out and i have 3.5V on terminal both terminal 5 & 5A ... as soon as i start the car the voltage seems fine ... i would only expect to have voltage on the power side of the fuse .. in this case terminal 5

I get 3.5V on terminal T94/49 on ECU connector ( im expecting Ground here ) ... Batt voltage when running

I also get 3.5V on fuse 9 & 10 key on engine off ... Voltage seems fine when car as soon as car is running

Same for the J757 engine component power supply relay .. key on engine off i get 3.5V on terminal 4 & 8 ... i get batt voltage on terminal 2 & 6

There are many other terminal reading 3.5V key on engine off .. all of the power side coming from that red/white wire coming from the fuse 5

Im trying to find a common issue to all those components ... Im really starting to suspect the ECM

Any leads?

Im still very annoyed by that #5 fuse under the ECM reading ~3.5 volts ...

Some of the place I traced it to was pin T94/49 and T94/93 of ECM connector

Even with the relay J299 SAI pump relay removed ... im still picking up 3.5V at terminal 49 witch as far as im concerned should be straight ground

Im pretty sure the ECM is shorted ... A new one is 3006.85$ CAD ... i never found a used one locally to test

Also it the ECM has been changed in 2011

( Sorry about my ugly diagram ... my computer with alldata crashed yesterday .. its being fixed at this moment so this is the only diagram i have available right now )
