Hello guys!

Ever since I bought my car back in 2014, I've been annoyed at the original Cruise Control.
In isolation, it works fine - but the whole concept of cruise control kind of requires you to be dead alone on the road.

So, I've wanted to retrofit adaptive cruise control for my car!
I've checked if this is possible before, and I've been told it cannot be done unless the car came specced with it from factory.
Now, I'm half-doubtful about this, since it's virtually possible to buy any component and/or control module for any given VW, and in my recently aquired VCDS I have the possibility of activating the Adaptive Cruise Control feature.

Obviously, I've not tried that since I'm probably missing a heap of components.
Anyways, I wanted to check with you guys - Who knows this stuff well - If this can be done.
Is the answer yes? Great! I'll just need to figure out what I need to buy and do. My qualified guess tells me I need:

  • A front-mounted radar (I think the 3C/B6 has the radar in the front emblem)
  • A new cruise control module (CAN-unit)
  • A new handle-column for the steering wheel
  • A new ABS-pump (I think - The car has Auto-Hold which I believe utilizes the ABS-pump for braking purposes)
  • Some clever coding in VCDS

I'm asking for much now I know, so please know that I greatly appreciate any given answers :)

To 3C Passat is doable as no component protection there.

You need,

ACC radar and holder for it
New grill with solid VW emblem
Wiring
New stalk with ACC distance etc.

Possibly and most likely also :

New ABS pump that supports ACC (8T3 or 8T5)
Probably also new instrument cluster

And of course coding and professional calibration of the ACC system.

There's at least one guy in Finland who did this for his 3C Passat.

Look here, in Finnish but Google translator helps :

Thanks mate.
I'll give it a thorough read with Google Translate.

I bought a new instrument cluster last year. It is from a 2011 with blue needles, LCD screen etc.
I'll check with the seller if it's compatible.
VDCS coding is alright, but what about the ACC calibration? Do I have to make a VW workshop do that?

Also, it seems like your Finnish friend had to buy a new CAN-gateway as well.

Hi I've done this fairly recently thanks mainly to assistance from some of the very knowledgeable and helpful guys on this forum :)
I've tried to pull the information together from a number of sources but it's by no means complete:

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/f234/adaptive-cruise-retrofit-118949.html

There is a guy in Russia who can get the B6 EPB to work with the B7 ABS module, and also can modify a non-ACC ABS module to ACC without disassembly however he doesn't look like he shares the information :(

I have done it twice. Nothing overlycomplicated, but as for B6, finding the correct Can-GW might be hard. Coding is easy.
As You have the latest ECU SW for 3.2 it's no problem. It was for first SW.

I have a B7 ACC KIT for sale, but that won't help You because, You will need B6 ABS and other parts.

Thanks guys!

I've done some online research, I've contacted our friend in Finland, and I've checked out this Russian guys list thoroughly.
This is the preliminary parts list.

ABS Pump: 3C0 614 109 AG
Radar: 3C0 907 567 M
CAN-Gateway: 3C0 907 530 N
Front radar mount: 3C0 907 179 A + 3C0 907 179 B
Adaptive Cruise Relay: 3C0 951 253 A
Front emblem: 3C0 853 601 A JZA
Stalks: 3C9 953 513 T

I will most definately make a retrofit guide when I get cracking with this, and I cannot wait to get it done. Thanks so much for the help so far!

Having some trouble sourcing the ABS pump.
Can I use any of these four ABS-pumps, or does it HAVE to be the AG one? I've managed to find the 2009 one with "E".

2008 - 3C0614109Q
2009 - 3C0614109E
2010 - 3C0614109AG
2010 - 3C0698109E

EDIT;
WOW, 10 minutes after posting this I got an e-mail from a supplier saying the AG pump is in stock.
Sorry guys, no need to worry - I found it :)

Code:
Adresse 03: Bremsenelektronik Labeldatei: DRV\3C0-614-109-C4.clb
   Teilenummer SW: 3C0 698 109 E HW: 3C0 614 109 AG
   Bauteil: J104 C4 440 V3 0017
   Revision: --025--- Seriennummer: 00000795072347
   Codierung: 0000314
   Betriebsnr.: WSC 74565 000 00000
   VCID: 2C7851C58F8AE02165-8078

This is the 2010 AG hardware module, with the software of the 2010 E module..?

1. Encode a new block of ABS, if you replaced a block with a similar revision, then the encoding from the old block (for example for block ... 109E and L, the encoding will be the same as for blocks ... 109C, D, K; for blocks Q and R corresponds to blocks P, S, T, but the AG blocks, despite the revision corresponding to the previous ones, have a coding similar to AF blocks only). If you update the revision of the block, you will have to look for the encoding of the corresponding ABS unit on the car with a similar engine and gearbox, because they determine the encoding. After the encoding, all sensors related to the ESP (longitudinal and lateral acceleration sensors, steering angle sensor) and the parking brake must be adapted / calibrated. If adaptive with the front of the assistant.

2. Set the correct encoding for the new gateway (Address 19: CAN Gateway), in accordance with the list of installed blocks in the old gateway, plus put a daw in front of 13 - Auto Dist. Reg.

3. Change the coding of the stalk unit (Address 16: Steering wheel). In my case, for block 3C0 953 549 AC, was the code 0001111, became 0001121.

4. Change the encoding of the engine control unit (Address 01: Engine). In my case, for the engine 1.8 TSI (06J 906 026 A), the encoding was 0404000319070160, it became 0404000319070260. In order for the block to accept the encoding, turn off and turn on the ignition again, the engine should not be started.

This is an automatically translated text from a russian forum. This guy is a genius, which breaks down the whole retrofit process, but I am struggeling a little bit with this bit about programming.
As a part of the programming, he also explains that EVERY sensor inflicted has to be recalibrated/adapted. But he does not explain how

Also, I'm just wondering if this is the whole programming sequence in it's entirity - Does anyone know?

Also you really need to calibrate the actual ACC radar. The finnish guy in the same thread I attached earlier, had created an ingenious device for DIY calibration of ACC radar :) Check it, it's quite clever.

He means you need to run basic settings on G85, G201 etc.
This is well documented:
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/VW_Passat_(3C)_Brake_Electronics#Basic_Setting

Thank you for finding this for me! :-)

I don't know if something gets lost in translation, but I can't find it in his thread. The only thing I see is that he mentions the user "Repomies" on page two about making the radar sense things better. (By that I think he means calibration).

Where is the super-like button..!

Thanks - That was a problem I did not even think about! Of course it has to point in a straight line! :D
Great stuff, I will use this when I get my radar.

Okay guys, I have found some parts, but not all the same which I described in my preliminary parts list - I will post a new list here in i matter of hours or days. I will have to ask for a review on that list just to make sure all parts are compatible.

Okay, so the guy I'm buying from has:

ABS-pump: 3C0 698 109 E
CAN-Gateway: 7N0 907 530 Q (With a chip for B6)
Stalks: From sedan, but will be modified.
Radar: 3C0 907 567 G
Front emblem and mounting brackets

He claims all this will work togehter, as he pulled it out of a B6 sedan. What do you guys think?

Are you sure that the pump number is correct? It should be 3C0 614 109 L or E. Both of those should support 8T3 which is ACC. This is according to ETKA.
3C0 698 109 is the hydraulic part of the pump.

CAN gateway I could not find any PR numbers in ETKA.

I'm unsure. This is the number he gave me. It is a software upgraded ABS-pump. He says it was not ACC compatible before.

The CAN gateway is a Passat B7 part, with some kind of B6 chip in it.

Hi

The ABS pump can be modified and if done correctly will be cheaper then finding the "AG" pump. 3c0698109 means the software has been updated and thatswhy the index change. From 614109AG to 698109E for example.

Stalks - You can swap the right stalk. For Assist button, You will need it for "Assist menu" direct access. To disable front assist etc... .
Can-GW - I still recomend You to find original cangw. I think this system uses the Bronken modchip. It was only a test-only. I consider it more experimental then the ABS pump modifcation.

But that is just my thoughts.

You are correct.
I just talked to the seller - The pump used to be non-compatible for ACC. Bronken did a firmware swap on it to "E" for ACC compatibility. I will probably just switch out the control unit and leave the hydraulic unit be in the car. This simplifies the matter since I won't need to bleed the system.

The stalks will be swapped by the seller, just like you described.
CAN-Gateway - Again, 100% correct. You win the jackpot! Seller confirms this is a bronken modified CAN-Gateway.

I don't like the idea of an experimental chip in the car - But again, I'll get the complete set for 800€. With radar, harness, stalks, ABS-pump, can-gateway etc. That is a STEAL!
If the CAN-Gateway stops working, I will be able to buy the B6 gateway and ACC-relay and fix the issue.

Edit;
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Genuine...ash=item3d24dc14bb:g:FyUAAOSwKtlWl0KL&vxp=mtr

This one plus the relay w/ relay holder will do the trick.

Edit 2;
No, I might just buy the original parts. I don't want homemade electronics in the car.
I already have the 3C0 614 109 AF pump in my car. I should be able to buy a "3C0 698 109 E" or "3C0 614 109 AG" and just replace the electrical control module? Not the hydraulic block?

On the B6 swapping the electronic part only is easier task when on B7 where that is impossible.

For that You need a very small Torx-20, like this: http://www.fixmyoldride.com/images/right-angle-ratchet-t20.jpg

Most difficult would be the far back fourth bolt, where access is poor. The brakelines may also be in the way. I did swap my ABS module, only to find out the new module wasn't compatible with old hydraulics, so i needed to remove whole assemby. Yours is OK.

When installing i strongly reccomend putting some thin wire or thread tied to bolt and ratchet, so You wouldn't lose them. I did it and it saved me many times.
