looking to buy this from an auction, so as u can imagine my excitement and fear. i have not been able to run a scan on it because they will not give me chance auction rules. by the way it has 190k miles, with my little genric code reader i got p300 303 304 307. just wanted to know what are the chances of it being a chain?

What year RS4?

B7, I assume?

With 190k on it, I'd just figure doing the chains and de-carboning the valves whether they need it or not. :)

I owned an '07 B7 RS4 for 10 years and was an active member on many RS4 owners sites, never did any owners report problems with the timing chains - the chain design was completely reworked from the earlier non-FSI V8 fitted to the B6.

Common problems were vacuum leaks causing loss of power (often incorrectly attributed to carbon problems), and sticking inlet flaps.

Even at ~200,000 miles?

I'm genuinely curious 'cause I still have the silly notion to get one at some point.

Some US owners have done nearly 300,000 miles on the original chains - the problem on the B6 was related to the tensioners failing, and those are the major design change.

The sound of a V8 doing 8250rpm is intoxicating, enough reason alone to own a B7 RS4 :D

Yes it was, I also had mine remapped by a specialist on this side of the pond which lifted the redline to 8600 - that was even more awesome

Try looking on the B7 RS4 Forum of rs246.com, there's a good guide on there for potential purchasers.

So I got a little more info on the misfire apparently cylinder number 7 has lower compression than the rest of the cylinders also it passed the leak down test. Since it passed the leak down test im thinking the valve should be okay could it be that the carbon has build up so much that it's restricting air coming into the cylinder

Thank you so much for all the response sorry that I put such a vague post. At the end it's sold for more than what I wanted to pay for it especially after hearing it skip while it was cranking to start. Uwe for your information or anybody looking to buy one it sold for k11 usd. just in case I need it to do engine work my number was closer to k8. seen them with 30,000 miles selling for about $60,000 to cars with 50 or 60 thousand miles selling closer to 30,000usd

FYI when I purchased my RS4 new in the UK in 2006 it cost £53,000 ($67,000) and it sold in 2016 with 83,000 miles for £17,400 ($23,000).
