The Car: 06 A6 3.2

The symptom: Rough idle/even vibration, think old rabbit running well, really bad engine mount. Only 1 code, listed below.

The History: 140Kish miles, deferred maintenance, they finally decided to step up. We did plugs/filters at first visit. We resealed 'cam ladders', replaced Bank 2 Timing chain adjuster(broken plastic running surface), intake port carbon clean(they were really bad on this one), and #6 injector due to misfire code and 000632/ P0278 Injector #6; contribution/balance fault. The car ran poorly from the outset, so I'm not clear if this was a pre-existing condition, but I believe it may not have been.

What I've checked, and learned so far: After delivery, and a few days of driving, it set
-- 004409/P1139 Fuel Trim Bank 2 (Add), system too rich. Sorry I only have a printed version right now. RPM 672, Temp, 90C. On initial checking, I had worked out Bank 2 was running too rich, and this DTC confirmed it, but did not return after sending the car for a week, I believe the issue is borderline at the threshold for setting it. I removed B2 plugs hoping to see a fouled one, thinking leaking/bad injector. No dice there. I proceeded to remove B1 plugs, and do a compression test. Fuel pump disabled B1 is 175-180, B2 is 155-160. I moved all plugs/coils to their opposite banks, as well as the leading O2's just to rule them out.

What I'm thinking now: The B2 timing is incorrect. Based on lower compression and the work done, and the fact that no single plug is a standout for running rich, causing the control unit to compensate, and lean the Bank...

And my question!! Wouldn't I get a correlation code if this was the case? Is it possible to be out of time one link and not code?

Sure if the car is FOD

Is car modified?

First I'd flash to legacy flash file 0020 & look for the DTC and then I'd flash to the 0030 to be sure it wasn't FOD.

Timing is out.........

It is possible to appear in time on chains when setup but from prior damage the sprockets float on the cam press fit or a key-way shears within adjuster........but enough within a reluctor window to allow for no DTC to be reported during adaption.

--I'm sorry, I'm not clear on this. (also not clear on how to use the quote system!) Unfortunately, I didn't do this job, I'm on cleanup, so it looks like my first step will be to recheck timing on Bank 2, and report back.

One thing I noticed after chewing a bit was that the group 093 data seems counter intuitive to me. Shouldn't both Intake values, and both Exhaust values be approximately the same as each other? They clearly are not...

Yes, I know that sounds ignorant. When I first saw the adaption values in the MVB, I somehow missed that they were opposite. For whatever reason I didn't see that they are almost exactly inverse of each other (I saw, incorectly, the 2.3deg, and thought they were both on the Intake side). I noticed it when printed though, which is why I brought it up, hastily.
I've got 3 timing related nightmares I'm dealing with right now, I'm tired, frustrated, and under a lot of pressure to get these problems sorted. I came here, hoping a 'professional' would look at the situation, see what might be obvious to fresh eyes, and say something like' "yea that sucks, a bit odd no code, but looks like you have a strong case to dig back in and double check the work just done". I wasn't looking for cryptic language, and comments. I will get it sorted and do my due diligence and report what I find. Thanks.

Yes, I know that sounds ignorant. When I first saw the adaption values in the MVB, I somehow missed that they were opposite. For whatever reason I didn't see that they are almost exactly inverse of each other (I saw, incorectly, the 2.3deg, and thought they were both on the Intake side). I noticed it when printed though, which is why I brought it up, hastily.
I've got 3 timing related nightmares I'm dealing with right now, I'm tired, frustrated, and under a lot of pressure to get these problems sorted. Three cars with timing issues and you are frustrated?

You better check your basics.........

What is MMS anyway?
Are you a professional shop because your username implies so?

Do you have the factory repair manuals?

The information given to you isn't cryptic.........you are just appearing lazy here & getting no sympathy with an attitude like that, further trying to lean on the forum for a magic answer & when you should already know your job......pretty lame.

Trying to pass it off like people here have mistreated you or evaded answering, this isn't at all fair........ nor has that happened either.

I am wondering still on the no DTC issue because that always concerns me when a controller doesn't see the deviation with an immediate required DTC for MIL, but would allow the car to run like shit with no light until an MIL came on for rich mixture. WTF........ right?

That is why I wanted the firmware backed up and checked for being modified.

FOD whether electronic tampering or stupid unqualified work is never ending.

I am a shop. I have been in business 23 years. We are small, and, unfortunately I wear many hats. I wish I could keep up with everything as technology evolves, but, its hard. My 3 current issues are from work I did not do. (A Volvo timing belt job, the tensioner bolt snapped off 2 weeks later, and a 2.0T Passat running issue after failed tensioner--if you are craving details from that, they are here http://members.iatn.net/techmail/view/index.aspx?m=20244&t=euro_drive ) I am not looking for the 'magic answer'. I was posting, simply to ask, if anyone had experienced a similar issue, without correlation codes. I am trying to avoid digging back in to recheck, unless I feel there is a strong case to do so. As I stated originally, I believe it is a timing issue, that was created by this job. I just wanted some 'back up' on that path. I am unable to reflash and check firmware at this time. I finally got setup with BMW (I now have the Icom Next, and am navigating the learning process), and the VW/Audi process is daunting, as expressed from colleagues, and my own experience with attempting to begin the process. Again--I have so little time!

That's why I'm puzzled, and initially reluctant to pull it all apart...But, after seeing, and realizing, the timing values bank to bank are opposite at idle, that will be my next step.
I am sad/embarrassed to say, that I have not done this job, on this engine, and having my guy do it before I have, and learning its caveats on my own was a mistake on my part. Live and learn.

And I'm sorry, I can't seem to figure out how you guys get quotes in....I've never been a forum guy, I basically live by iatn...even the V bulletin home page section touches on it, but I couldn't find the process. I really wanted to give this forum a go, though, because I really appreciate what all of the Ross Tech guys have done with both the product and amazing support. Thanks again, Scott

i can assure you that i have had a few with 14 degrees or whatever is kw off with no codes at all and no complaints from customer. the only thing was i felt a little difference at idle while i had the front door open. compression on the good side was 185 and bad side was 175. not much diff but enough

As I looked into this it a bit further, it appears this setup is just like the 2.8 timing belt, where you lock it, pull the tensioner pin and lock the cam sprockets--except when you happen to notice the tensioner didn't have the "juice" to properly tension the belt initially, and you reach down and give it little tug to get the belt tensioned correctly. I'm hoping the same type of thing happened in this case (especially because that's the side that got the new tensioner). I read a few posts on iatn, about this exact issue on the 3.2. I'll know when I attempt to lock it up! Oh, and I'm not clear on the KW thing either....anyone?
Hopefully getting the car back on Monday and dig in, while my Volvo head with 20 bent valves is at the machine shop...I'll report if I get it sorted.

I know its been a while, sorry..Took some time to get the car back in. With information from you guys, and going over the repair info carefully, I dove into the engine to find, that, yes, in fact the cam timing was incorrect. It turns out that it was much like I was guessing...that the tension side of the chain was not in position when the cam sprocket was 'locked' via tightening the bolt. English is a second language for my guy who originally did the job. I can see how this happened to him.(as I said earlier, this was my mistake for letting him do a job I have not done) He thought the cam tensioner tool was simply to hold the cam vvt assembly in place while tightening the bolt. The reason for the cam sprocket tool is TO HOLD TENSION ON THE CHAIN ON THE TENSIONED SIDE. This is because the tensioner is hydraulically operated by oil pressure and cannot possibly do the task when simply removing the tensioner lock tool.

So...to answer my original question...can the engine run rough at idle with no timing correlation codes when the timing is in fact incorrect? YES! Hopefully this thread helps others in the future..For those of you that did... thank you for taking the time to read and respond...I'll take my "hazing" in stride :)
