On this topic, I coincidentally just saw these pictures posted by a BMW i3 (REx) owner who did a DIY transaxle fluid change at 100K miles. For a car that doesn't even shift gears, that magnetic drain plug certainly caught a whole lotta ground gears!!!!!

Speaking of EV battery safety...

News sources indicate that's the second of of these buses that has burned catastrophically in recent weeks and all ~150 or so have now been pulled from service.

A bit of digging indicates that these buses use "solid state" LMP batteries. What does "LMP" stand for? Lithium METAL Polymer. Conventional Li-ion batteries contain no metallic lithium, only lithium salts in their electrolyte, but these do!

Why would anyone think that a battery containing substantial amounts of metallic lithium is safer than a conventional Li-ion battery?

lithium is highly reactive and flammable, and must be stored in vacuum, inert atmosphere or inert liquid such as purified kerosene or mineral oil.

@Uwe: Answer to your question below - which I copied directly from your link and quoted as one of the advantages of LMP Batteries (go figure)!!

You can't make this stuff up.....
Subsidies (free "fuel") at taxpayer expense: No. That part of the bill, I agree with.

Interfering with what private businesses do: No. That part, I disagree with.

In three years of EV ownership, I have used free government-provided chargers exactly twice. Both times were at EV car shows, sponsored by a neighboring county government to educate people on EV ownership. I was sitting in my car with the aircon running both days (staying out of the sun per doctor's orders), and just put enough power back in to ensure that I could make it back home after running the battery pack down running the aircon.

I've also only used one free business EV charger. It was at the Kia dealership, out of principle the day that my wife dropped almost 50 grand on her EV and they made me wait an hour to process the paperwork after I drove her to pick up her new car. i even took a picture, just because.....

For that matter, I have never once had to scramble for a free cell phone charger or use free wifi in my entire life.....

Visited a friend in San Diego a couple weeks ago, got a ridealong in two Aptera Motors prototypes, this one and an AWD test-mule.

Solar-electric spaceship? Yes please. Why? Because this is America. Biggest problem is figuring out which car to sell to make room in my driveway.

^^^ Eight year warranty on the battery. So a 2014 model is probably just out of warranty. But yeah, this is gonna be a problem for EVs as they age. However, it wouldn't surprise me to see something of a cottage industry spring up that refurbishes EV batteries with new cells.

well...let's hope that the BMS on those batteries doesn't have some line of code that says : ooopsies..you're eight yrs old, you're going to make us some profit now , SHUTDOWN !!! Obsolescence they call it ??
