This repair started out as a fairly straight forward wheel bearing replacement. My drivers-side rear wheel bearing has been making noise for about a month, so it was time to replace it... I arranged time over at my friends house who is a 20 year VW / Audi trained mechanic. Purchased the wheel bearing, pulled the wheel and all the bits to allow us access to pull the hub and pull the bearing out and replace it... all seemed good. However, along the way we noticed that the rear brake pads seemed very low and we should probably replace them since we had to have all of this apart anyways. However, it never occurred to us that we needed to put the computer in brake-pad replacement mode and retract the electronic parking brake... as per the Ross-Tech procedure until after we had the brakes off and pads pulled out. Our mistake was probably somewhere around this point, that we started the car with the drivers side parking brake electrical connector disconnected. We reconnected the parking brake connector and thought that we could put the parking brake system into that retracted mode now... but all we got was flashing lights on the dash and the parking brake button flashing as well.

We found that no matter what steps we tried on the computer (we followed the Ross-Tech wiki on how to open and close the parking brake for pad replacement), we could not get it to co-operate and clear itself up. However, we continued to work the problem, we removed the electric motor and turned the piston out to open it wide enough to get the new pads in. This seemed to work well enough to get the pads in and we put it all back together. And were able to run the Adaptation to set the new pad thickness. But from this point, we could not get the computer to recognize that everything was back together and seemingly working properly... all of the brake related lights on the dash are flashing and the buzzer is buzzing continuously... yet the brakes are functioning properly, even the parking brake seems to work... yet the red light on the parking brake button is flashing! Not exactly sure how to get this back to normal?

It was a very long day yesterday and got home very late, after midnight... so I ran a fresh full scan on the VCDS this morning (my mechanic friend uses some different diagnostic tool... so I didn't have my VCDS with me yesterday). Here is the pertinent bits from that log:

Please note, that the ABS module did have a fault with the ESP system from before for about 3-4 months now. This caused the yellow ESP warning light on the dash to stay on, but I was ok with that for the time being. Was going to address that in the fall before the winter rolled around.

Hey Uwe,

Thanks so much for the links to some very valuable information and procedures... good videos as well.

However, I performed the procedure for Defective Control Module on 03. It didn't seem to clear the codes, which means that the ABS Module is probably defective (as suspected). So a new or used replacement module is required.

The parking brake issue also looks like a defective motor on the right side caliper... so a new unit or at least a used replacement is in order.

Thanks again for the help,
Brent.

I was wondering once I get the replacement parts... what are the procedures for getting ready to swap these parts in? Considering that all of the brake warning lights are on now?

Let me know,
Thanks,
Brent.
