Audi TT (8J) Error Auto Roof

Hello,

every 2 to 3 months I get the following error scenario: First there is an under-voltage problem with the auto roof (not displayed and not noticeable to the driver) and about 2 weeks later a switch position failure occurs and the roof cannot be closed anymore.

Each time I clear the failure codes and do the initialization procedure for the roof, the it works for about 2 to 3 months
VW dealer exchanged already the motors.

I also tried to perform the output test on both right and left Flap Motor. Nothing moves but I get these error codes

I just charged the battery. Battery = 12.9 Volt with Ignition On, Engine Off. 15.3 Volt with Engine running.
I only operate the rood with engine running.

Possible Cause:
No self-diagnosis is possible.

I would get the WD [Edit: Wiring Diagram] out and trace the feed circuits back to supply and ground.

Do a good visual test/wiggle and seeing that tracks can carry the needed current to operate the roof.

Any idea why the flaps do not move at all during the output test for flap motors, but the roof and flaps operate normal when leaving the test -> I was running the test while engine was running -> Should the engine be off ?

Regarding the battery: The values posted this morning where from right after the battery was charged. Probably not very useful those measurements.
I measured this evening again: 12.5 Volt w/ IGN off, 12.1 w/IGN ON, 13.8 V w/engine running --> Battery is 5 1/2 years old --> I am wondering if the battery might be part of the problem ?

Is there a certain diagnostic procedure necessary when disconnecting and reconnecting the battery ?

I would go after that battery if you haven't already done so.

G596 and G597 sensors fail with great regularity but you usually end up with 02000 - Switch Position: Implausible Signal in conjunction with 03246 - Sensor for Canopy Flap; Left (G596) and/or 03247 - Sensor for Canopy Flap; Right (G597) faults.

Next, I do not have personal diagnosis/repair experience with one of these vehicles, so the feedback I have is limited to phone and email support, but TSB 61-09-02 or 2018777/7 mentions:

When performing the side flap motor adaptation, it is imperative that a complete convertible top run be completed immediately after the initialization. Do not press the “done” button before doing so; otherwise, the adaptation will not be complete. This step is specified in the GFF test plan.

Because repair information is copyrighted material belonging to VW/Audi I cannot provide any additional information but you should be able to locate that information in your repair manual.


Lastly, that VCDS label file (8J7-959-255.lbl) is not encrypted so you can open it with Notepad to see these notes in the Output Test section:

This car does not use a battery regulator so the battery does not need/support coding or adaptation. You will end up with a G85 steering angle fault that should be resolved after a brief test drive but if it isn't you can refer to this page:

We do not have a MK60E1 specific Wik page for some reason but the MK60EC1 system is nearly identical.

I would run a TBA and ECM style Kick-down after restoring power. Both of those links are located on the Common Procedures page.

Dana , you are saying that these 3 faults together are also battery related or both 2 sensors fail the same time ?!?
