hello people forum newbie and total vcds novice so please be gentle with me

ok after shelling out £300 quid for this great piece of diagnostic pc technology i am pretty much clueless how to use it apart from doing a needle sweep & alarm chirp mods with instructions on my wifes audi which i managed to do with step by step guide worked a treat ;)

i have just purchased a 2010 audi a4 b8 s-line avant special edition 2.0 143 6 speed manual damaged to drivers front corner mainly suspension damage.
after replacing the front sub-frame,suspension leg,driveshaft,anti-roll bar and power steering rack all good used replacement parts i have the scan of my problems below which will not delete from the vcds.....there was no airbag damage i have simply removed and replaced all these bolt on parts from underneath the car not touched steering inside the car but have undone the steering knuckle to replace the rack so possibly this may be my problem i think

i have the yellow dash light squiggle and bleeping esp fault on display

could anyone please help me resolve the problems.......does a used power steering rack need re-coding or sommat ?

i look forward to hearing from anybody who might be able to help me many thanks in advance daz :)

scan details below :

Congrats on the tweaks, it's a a bit nerve wracking the first time :D

First thing to do is clear all the DTCs and see what comes back.
Have you checked the MVBs per the wiki for 00778 ?

I suspect in the long run you'll need to replace G85.

Also, please fill out this form to get registered as a verified VCDS user.

thanks for the reply yes i have a genuine hex + can pro user kit however i am a total novice.....when i did the needle sweep & alarm chirp with detailed instructions my adrenaline was going and like a nervous wreck pushing buttons in case i destroyed sommat ha ha !
could you answer a question for me please...if i register as a verified vcds user does this mean the cable is now registered solely to myself for technical help or is this just to verify i own a genuine cable to be accepted on the forum
reason i ask this question is i only intend to run the car for 6-12 months and sell it along with re-selling the pro user kit and i beleive the value of the cable is considerably less if registered for technical help....if this info is correct i would ideally try to avoid technical help as i will only use the cable a couple of times at the most, could you advise what my best options are please as i need to resolve the esp problem on the 2010 s-line avant, many thanks for any advice daz.

LOL, sounds familiar - once I did my first rear brake replacement I wasn't as nervous.

See my answer about transfers here in your other post.

thanks for the reply.....i have just read the other post and still not sure if registering myself on this forum as "verified" means i have actually registered for technical help or not
Can i ask questions on the forum without registering the cable for technical help and if not what are the benefits if i do register the cable please ?
I know absolutely nothing about vcds so need to decide before registering if i can actually get help to use it to fix my car or just re-sell and pay a expert vcds user to fix it ?
i currently have 2 audi a4 b8 s lines with replaced part problems.... 1 car had replacement abs unit after n/s front corner damage and got esp/abs malfunctions and car 2 has had new steering rack and got steering angle sensor/esp problems.
i can remove & replace parts but no nothing about these damn computers & electronics ....now i have bought the cable do you think i could get guided help to fix my problems on both my cars or just get the experts involved
i would love to learn how to use this great technology myself rather than keep looking at it LOL :D

any help/advise from over the pond greatly appreciated as need to get both cars dtc free this week if possible
cheers daz.

The real questions here are: How much time and effort are you willing to put into learning? Will it save you 300 quid this week vs. taking the car to teh dealer? That's unclear. But if you keep those cars (and VCDS) will it save you 300 quid over the long haul, the answer is, almost certainly, especially if you're willing to learn.

The other consideration is: If you re-sell your system, will we know that whomever purchased it from you is not the original owner and thus refuse to register that person at no cost? You see, only the original owner is eligible to register at no cost.

hi the cable has not been registered yet so if i sold it why would it matter who the person was at first registration as the money has been paid allowing that first indavidual owner technical help ?
i can understand if i register it....get tech help.....sell it.....next person same serial number wanting help gets charged $99 that is understandable but at the minute it has had no technical help or registration so why would that be a problem if i just sold it and got a expert to sort my cars out ?
of course i would love to learn how to use this tool as that is why i bought it,however browsing forums trying to gain knowledge of how to use it is another story......all this field this bank that and block this and the other, coding, labels etc i do not understand any of it:confused:
all i am asking is if i register the cable what level of help would i receive trying to rectify my problems if i was willing to learn please, could a total novice like myself be guided through technical problems easy enough with instructions or not as i am pretty much at a loss at the moment deciding what to do for the best.....thanks.

Here's my take on the situation daz...

Firstly please know that I'm not suggesting your system is illegitimate, or questioning your skills.

We mostly don't answer questions in the new user forum because we like to protect Ross-Tech's intellectual capital.
Ross-Tech has put a lot of blood, sweat, tears and dosh into making a great product for us.
These people have families and mortgages and rely on a paycheck from the company.
Many of us have been burned by helping folks with counterfeit devices on other forums, which is part of the reason this one was created.
Once a user is promoted to Verified VCDSer they have full access to the forum and the folks there.

That said there is no one person at Ross-Tech, specialist like Jack, or enthusiast on this or any other forum who can answer every scenario or problem.
We all put in a best effort to help fellow owners, mechanics and enthusiasts - and each have our area of speciality.
Typically this come with a great expense of time and in many case personal funds for things like erWin and PL24.

VCDS is like an ultra advanced torque wrench - incredibly useful once you learn how to use it and to what specs the manufacturer has designed the vehicle.
Without factory repair manuals, the wiki, the guidance of those more experienced, and a lot of common sense we couldn't use the tool effectively.
These vehicles can be and are immensely complex, and simple parts changing has gone the way of the dodo bird some decades ago.

There is a cost associated with the transfer of the license simply because it costs Ross-Tech money to do it in human labor to update the records.
It's also not a good value to Ross-Tech (in my opinion) to provide free support to anyone who may ever own a system when each owner can typically recoup 90%+ of his or her original cost.

My advice would be to register and let us help you.
We can't guarantee your situation will be resolved, but there is a hell of a brain trust frequenting this forum.
As Uwe said, the system can very easily pay for itself (e.g. my main dealer charges $125/hr for diagnostics), you do the math.
Whomever owns the system after you, hopefully way down the road, will have to deal with the situation regardless if they want support.

Ultimately it's your decision, but long term ownership of VAG vehicles make this a must have tool for even the most infrequent DIYer.
I have never even laid a wrench to an Audi or VW, yet people like to call me an 'expert'.
It's about the support and knowledge built over time.

ps - I sure miss carburetors and points as a grey haired long term DIYer and long ago Honda Certified Motorcycle Mechanic

akematic thanks for your input on my last post to this thread, yes i totally agree with you with regards to protecting what ross tech has created for it's registered users...i was not fishing for free help or advise.... i was unsure if registering the cable was only for 1-1 tecnical help via phone or email etc ? if it needs to be registered just for general forum use and being a member on this site then that is not a problem i was just unclear on this "verified" user details.

What i have to find out before registering is if i can actually get help on both my vehicles through vcds as both have been in accidents resulting in one vehicle having a "used" replacement abs unit and the other needing a replacement "used" pas steering rack inc front subframe.

I have been told both vehicles may need main dealer tools only to re-programme abs module & power steering rack so need to do a bit of research on this because if true i have no use for the vcds as i intend to sell both car's unless i get stuck with them LOL ;)

Years ago i never had any of these problems if i got a car with suspension damage just bolt new parts on and away you go......wish that was still the case :(

I hope i can fix both my problem vehicles with this tool and avoid huge main stealer cost's so will report back and hopefully register once i know if i can get help off the forum, thanks for now daz.

VCDS is the lowest cost near equivalent to the dealer tool. You should be able to do that which is needed in the ABS and Steering modules.

Those days are long gone with the advent of all the electronic stability controls mandated for safety purposes. The general public, the consumers that buy cars, keeping pushing the government to make cars safer so the consumers can play with their cell phones and other toys while they sit in the car that will drive itself... The day of driving a car is coming to end. Soon, you will not be needed for the car to go from one point to another. The droid will do all the work!

It is also our hope - and with the help of those on this forum and the tool you now have, my bet is on your success!
