Happened a few times. Disconnecting battery for an hour normally fixed it.
Not anymore.

What is CAUSING the intermittent issue?
If immobilizer is kicking in: why (what part is 'malfunctioning')?

Car is at son's place 3 hours away, he does not have VAGcom with him.

Any tips?

Failing relais?

There is really no way to know at this point. But the fact that battery jesus has been done in the past makes me suspect the Immobilizer is getting wonky.

Crank, start and die is classic immobilser issue. You need to know why and without a code read that is guesswork.

I always looked at immo to be 'on' of 'off' (since not mechanical). How could it get wonky? Instrument cluster connectors corroding? 'Sender' (in the fob?) can 'fade'? Don't think a battery is involved for the 'sender'? "receiver" antenna (part of the ignition lock I think?) with bad connection (wires)?

There is a sensor coil that the immo uses to sense the passive transponder in the key, if that coil or any of the connections to it are intermittent the immo will become 'wonky'.

You can check if the transponder is the cause by trying with your spare key.

What can be done to troubleshoot (at this point, without VCDS) to determine if IMMO is the cause, and/or what PART (unless software changed itself) might be at fault. That brings up the question: what PARTS or modules are involved in the IMMO. I think instrument cluster is one, the RFID (?) chip in the key fob is another.

Holly code wrap Batman (Uwe)

There is nothing there to suggest either an immobiliser or ignition switch fault... which is odd given the symptoms.

Here is an autoscan.
175 posts here and I still have to add the CODE tags for you.

I agree with Crasher. I see nothing indicative of an immobilizer problem in that scan.

The reason I did not upload a scan right away is because the CAR IS 200 MILES AWAY (see post). And as you noticed, the scan is 2+ years old "Monday,13,April,2020,14:35:26:03761" , but since requested, posted a scan anyways.

Alternative to blindly handing the car to a local indy shop (who may or may not be able to diagnose and repair, at cost not exceeding a good portion of the cars value), would an immo defeat be effective as a 'patch' to get car going? Could remove ECU and mail to trusted tuner, so car is NOT looking for immo verificaiton from the wonky immo system?

I don't know how someone expect help or any sort of remotely accurate diagnosis by posting a scan that's 3 years old. That just boggles my mind. Post a updated auto scan otherwise no soup for you.

What happens when immo defeat doesn't fix the issue?? post a updated auto scan.

I would if I could (unfortunately, your post does not provide a suggestion how to get a scan done with a car 200 miles away, and no local folks (with VCDS) that I reached out to offered to jump in).
But some people (see Jef and DemoDave as examples) have enough knowledge to provide helpful insight.

Those who don't have anything useful to contribute can simply 'stay quiet' and move on.
It boggles my mind why people waste their time commenting on others' posts with nothing to contribute. But hey, to each his/her own.

So you'd like us to somehow remotely diagnose this car without seeing a current scan that might show what's going on with it?

If you don't wanna drive the 200 miles to scan the car, you could send him your interface. Or he could buy one of his own.

Without seeing a current scan, all anyone can do is guess. But even a current scan is no guarantee. VCDS can only show what the car knows. If this is indeed an immobilizer problem, the car will know. If it's something else, like a failing relay, the car might not know.
