Hello,

the problem is that whenever my car is up to running temperature and after that I have to stop the engine for a short while like when filing up at petrol station, the car won’t start immediately as usual. I need to crank a few times before the car will start again. If I parked the car for a longer period of time like 20 minutes or more the car starts without any problem. Any idea guys?

I did the fuel pressure test and at idle the fuel rail pressure was around 37000 hPa and within 2 to 3 minutes after the engine shut off the pressure went up to 66000 hPa due to the heat soak. I guess we’ve eliminated the fuel pressure lost as a possible cause of the problem. Thanks Uwe. It seems the heat of the engine has somehow effected the car’s ability to start again at high temperature.

Does it start easier if you press the throttle just after it starts cranking longer than expected? If the evap valve is stuck open, you can get a rich/hard warm start. On my car, it tended to be after getting to temp, then leaving it for 15 to 40 minutes. Sorter or longer and it mostly started fine. it was 100% fine on a cold start every single time.

You should be able to check the valve with a vaccum pump... I could just about breathe through mine :D

Hi Allan,
I did try to press the throttle pedal as you’ve suggested just in case, but it made no difference. The engine will only start after 4 or 5 cranks. I have no problem starting it in the early mornings. Thank you for the suggestion. I did some research and the culprit could be either the coolant temperature sensor or the motor starter. It’s seems there were instances where the sensor is faulty but did not give any DTC or CEL.

Just out of curiosity, does this also apply to CR TDI engines? I did this on my 1.6 and 1.2 TDI engines, and they bleed off pressure very rapidly.

I don't think it does. The fuel rails in them operate pretty close to the limits of what the materials can stand and allowing a doubling of fuel pressure due to temperature rise would likely result in bad things happening.
