2012 Audi TT Quattro // ABS Pressure Switch Diagnosis

This is not really a repair question, but more of diag question... I am having a few issues that I have narrowed down to brake pressure. I have no codes stored. When I take my foot off the brake (foot pressed hard), there is a couple second (One Mississippi, Two Mississippi - full seconds) lag before I can put my foot on the accelerator and begin to press it. Otherwise, my car will buck like a bull at a rodeo. If my foot is lightly on the pedal, I can jump on the gas right away. I am aware the brake pressure switch is contained in the ABS Pump Assembly. I am planning to do a brake flush (including the ABS Pump). I would like to log some data and view a delta of before/after values. For the life of me, I cannot find where in VCDS that I can read the actual values from the brake pressure switch. Can someone point me in the correct direction to find this info?

Brake pressure should be in MVB 005.1 of the ABS module.

So, I did manage to get some readings from the switch. I have a follow-up question - Should I ever see a reading of ZERO when my foot is off the brake pedal? I can see the pressure increase and decrease from foot pressure on the pedal. However, it never actually goes down to zero.

i don't think that seeing zero pressure in your abs pump would be a good thing

What PSI should hydraulic brakes be?
Typical full-lock operating pressures on conventional OEM-style automotive hydraulic-brake systems are 900–1,000 psi (69 bar) with manual brakes and 1,400-plus psi (96 bar)with power-assisted brakes.

While the vehicle is idling and sitting in park; with my foot off the brake, readings bob between .64bar and .88bar.

On a side note (when I have the ABS module open and I am testing the brakes), as I press down on the brake pedal, I get a distinct "click" from the ABS module. It continues after I close the module in VCDS, but disappears after I do a 30 second drive. I can reproduce the condition. Should this be concerning?

Let me know your thoughts.

Hi Ryan,
The brake pressure sensor is a very very common problem on Mk60 ABS, I have found that is often cheaper to buy the unit from VAG than getting it repaired.

According to the ECU, there is no problem. There are no stored codes. I am not sure what normal values should be. Based on the values provided, does it appear that I have an issue?

My ABS pump is covered under a third-party service contract. However, unless I can prove it has an issue, they will neither pay for, nor replace the part.

Pressure sensor inside abs unit is a common failure point or more or less the circuit inside the module. These can be rebuilt with lifetime warranty so that It never occurs gain.

I consider myself to be a pretty direct person when I ask questions. The responses I get always jump to the solution and don't actually answer my questions. It makes me feel like most VCDS users are lawyers and avoiding the subtle complexities of vehicle diagnostics.

I know the ABS Control Module is faulty. However, when my vehicle service contract company instructs the repair facility to clear the error and see if it returns as THE ONLY troubleshooting step, and then concludes that my vehicle is magically fixed because the error is gone, then I need to have a better understanding of the tools that I have available to me to diagnose and prove there is still an ongoing issue. I am not looking to be given a fish, I am looking to become a better fisherman. So, once again, let me ask, can anyone provide any general information on how to interpret Fault Status information provided in the Freeze Frame? Bits are cool and all, but I am sure that binary data means something to someone. Anyone?

I've been a member here for over 15 years and in all that time the usefulness of some parts of that Fault Status information has been very close to zero.

The second 'block' is (blame VAG software writers for this) IMHO useless unless you happen to be one of those software writers as the ABS just reports counts, but counts of what?

My take on this? - use the data that's useful and don't get hung up on the items where VAG haven't provided enough data for it to be meaningful.

A "vehicle service contract company" is basically an "insurance company". You're betting them the vehicle will break, while they're betting it won't, and the odds (averaged over enough vehicles) intrinsically favor the house (them). Moreover, when there is something that might require them to pay a claim, they have fiduciary duty to do everything they can to avoid paying that claim. So "clear the error and see if it returns" is not at all surprising.

Thank you for the info. On your reply, you referenced the code stored in 03: ABS Brakes. I am not sure how, exactly, all the codes are related. Usually, when I get the ABS Control Module issues, I throw three separate codes, which I copied below. The one under 4C: Tire Pressure II shows a frequency of seven. Dumb question... are the 03 and 4C errors the same? Or, is the 03: ABS Brakes module responding with a count of one because 4C: Tire Pressure II has set the MIL? I am a little bit confused, because the message "Check DTC Memory" alludes to the fact there is more info elsewhere? :confused:

Would a genuine VAS Interface at a dealership or a more modern VCDS Interface provide any further detail? I'm still rockin' my HEX+CAN that I bought a decade ago.

The fun part is I get to roll the dice @ $200 pop (copay) for them to clear the code. Thankfully, I have logs and can show that it has been doing it. But if it takes 4-6 months for the code to pop up, they just have to bide their time until the contract expires. On my other two VW vehicles, the warranty has certainly paid off - that is why I buy it. I have never had a warranty company this difficult and unwilling to replace ANYTHING - even if it says it is covered in the contract! :mad:

The ABS Control Module is expressly listed as a covered item. If they replace this one thing, the value of the contract will be realized.

I have never had a warranty company this difficult and unwilling to replace ANYTHING - even if it says it is covered in the contract!

They are counting on if they "jerk you around" long enough that you will give up or go away. "slow walking" . You may have to get an attorney to send them a letter to push your claim along. Its a sign of the times we are currently in.
