Hello,

We keep throwing these codes! Only happens when driving for a while (on freeway). We have replaced the throttle body THREE TIMES now, argh. We have replaced the connector plug, spliced in new wires, and new pins. All continuity to ECU and resistance values check out fine. Drives just fine for a few weeks then fails while driving. Letting the engine cool down will allow it to start and run again.

What am I missing? Is the ECU prone to this type of failure (about the only thing I haven't replaced yet).

Thanks,
Kelly

Stop running FOD modified code and more DTC's will come up to guide you.

What is FOD modified code? I don’t understand. I am using HEX-NET and the latest VCDS from Ross-Tech. Or are you suggesting that the ECU has been modified?!?

Thanks
Kelly

Hmmm. I have used modified ECU's before (urS6, RS6, VW GTI, etc.), but not on this car. I have not had good luck in my area with tunes like this because (theory) I live at higher altitude (5000 ft) and high summer time temperatures (100 F). They tend to crash at peak performance on pump gas.

Unfortunately, this car was purchased for my son's daily driver, not a tuner. So...what was the hint that you think the ECU is modified? Can you tell/guess which one it is (GIAC, Unitronic, ???). I want to UNDO this, but we are not the ones that did it. How would I do this short of finding a new ECU?

Indeed lets attempt to qualify FOD!
Please clear all fault codes and post a new complete auto-scan after letting car idle for 30 seconds & with the addition of the OBD2 data Modes 0x33 MODE 01-01, 03, 7 & 9 saved to the scan folder.

Hello,

Here is the complete scan after clearing all codes and running an auto-scan after 30 seconds with the car idling:

Thanks for your help.

Frankly, I don't see anything unusual with these scans. At this point the car will drive just fine until at random it will throw the two TB codes again and won't start. Usually on the side of the freeway in the middle of nowhere. Argh. Hope you can see something I can't. Thanks again.

Best,
Kelly Stevens

Hello,

Here is the complete scan after clearing all codes and running an auto-scan after 30 seconds with the car idling:

Nope it is FOD.......

CAT CANT BE READY BEFORE BEING TESTED IN OPERATION FOR AMPLITUDE DROP.

Kelly,
No screenshots to observe.

Confirmed........
Car must have FOD modified code removed & in order to make use of VCDS, so ECU will report tests being circumvented by nefarious code deleting the AECD's purported by your tuner!

Frankly, I don't see anything unusual with these scans.

It's hard to see something that cant report indeed!

So I wonder how your car could of had such a gross inconsistency with the data as certified, do you?

OP let's test this theory of liability a bit further & get to the bottom of the box on this okay?

Could you post a picture of your ECU outside and inside with clarity please?

I'd like to see if we see anything that is relevant to your described condition in the ECU or externally.

Take a fresh step towards extricating the car.......

Hello,

Thanks for you efforts. Wow! Here is a series of photos of the ECU as we extracted it and examined it. Note, we have had this out of the car once before to inspect the wiring (hence the security bolts are slotted now. We did that).

Here is the ECU in place before removal:

Here is the ECU after extraction for the vehicle:

Here is the ECU label:

Here are three images showing the tag on the cabling (looks stock):

Here is an image of the cable connectors showing no damage:

Here is an image of the inside of the ECU:

Here is an image of the ROM chip inside of the ECU:

And lastly....here is an image of some possible corrosion we find inside the ECU. We have hence cleaned it up - it was difficult to get off:

Thoughts? Thank you.

No, not the original owner. My son purchased it from a local used car dealer a few years ago.

It is interesting that the corrosion is on the throttle body controller pins. Our current plan is to clean up the corrosion (thanks for the sanding tip), put it back together, and drive until it fails again (confirming it was not the corrosion). It can take three months to fail sometimes. Very unpredictable.

I am an engineer (retired), so my mind works in trying to understand the failure mode. The corrosion could definitely cause erratic behavior like this. Especially if it has been reflashed with code that is tighter on the edges of the control mappings. Hmm.

I also note that the ECU label on the outside has a date code of 07-02-12. This basically proves the ECU has been replaced - assuming this is a date code. The date codes on the car and the actual ROM chip in the ECU do make sense though.

The ECU part number is ... HG, which is correct for this year. The ... HG version is a supercession of the ... EX version though. This would also possibly indicate an early production vehicle.

Going back to your theory of liability. Interesting. Are you suggesting that the build date for the car is early enough to be a pre-production version that may have been sold to the public unscrupulously?

BTW, we ran a full scan again on the car after clearing the codes and got a different readiness code just 30 seconds after starting the engine. Note sure if the previous one was because I had been idling the engine for a bit (much more than 30 seconds) while I was hooking up VCDS. At any rate, here it is for your interest:

Great fabulous questions, let's ask some more good questions & with self evident answers & maybe you can derive from the new questions in recant to yours, okay & because I would never want to say something by mistake that could be considered incendiary?

No, not the original owner. My son purchased it from a local used car dealer a few years ago.

It is interesting that the corrosion is on the throttle body controller pins. Our current plan is to clean up the corrosion (thanks for the sanding tip), put it back together, and drive until it fails again (confirming it was not the corrosion). It can take three months to fail sometimes. Very unpredictable.

Interesting it is indeed isn't it & after what, three TV's later?
Not a very thorough diagnostic path huh?

I am an engineer (retired), so my mind works in trying to understand the failure mode. The corrosion could definitely cause erratic behavior like this. Especially if it has been reflashed with code that is tighter on the edges of the control mappings. Hmm.
I would say corrosion could cause problems stock too, but hey I'd say if missing stack information for sure this would compound the lack of diagnostic data, wouldn't you & as an engineer, considering tests are ready for AECD components that haven't even could of run yet, but, yet again based on information you presented now right, is inconsistent with what you provided before no?

I also note that the ECU label on the outside has a date code of 07-02-12. This basically proves the ECU has been replaced - assuming this is a date code. The date codes on the car and the actual ROM chip in the ECU do make sense though.

Ever hear of European date codes & wouldn't that imply the year 2007 for production and either the month or day more likely being Dec. or Feb. ?

The ECU part number is ... HG, which is correct for this year. The ... HG version is a supercession of the ... EX version though. This would also possibly indicate an early production vehicle.

Isn't the HG the original part number as indicted in the COC application and was dropped and than becomes the EX according to the microfiche?

Going back to your theory of liability. Interesting. Are you suggesting that the build date for the car is early enough to be a pre-production version that may have been sold to the public unscrupulously?

Hey hey hey, where would you get such an idea, did you read the Conformity certificate application and test group number to surmise that or was it that news article?

BTW, we ran a full scan again on the car after clearing the codes and got a different readiness code just 30 seconds after starting the engine. Note sure if the previous one was because I had been idling the engine for a bit (much more than 30 seconds) while I was hooking up VCDS. At any rate, here it is for your interest:

Hey man, you are the engineer, further stated you cleared codes as aforementioned and displayed a CAT being ready after 30 seconds of engine idling operation, so how is that?

Maybe your car is not modified and maybe you don't know how to clear codes correctly with VCDS initially or maybe you made a mistake huh, but this part number thing seems mighty interesting huh?

Don't you think if it was my car, I'd probably fuse the OXS oxygen sensor heaters back to ECU for ground completion and with a low amperage fuse after measuring the draw needed to protect the controllers abilities & do the same for every consumer that was suspect, however, based on known defects in the industry with ME7 cars and how the TV drivers get FUBAR from either water ingress or a consumer bus taking down the TV & since also a load device isolated and controlled by the ECU wouldn't you do this just to know?

Holy run on sentence questions huh.........? :p

Shouldn't your sons car of been this?

OK my friend. You have convinced me through my questions and your leading answers that this car is clearly a pre-production mule from Audi that was sold inappropriately in the US.

1- The production date pre-dates Audi's certification for the vehicle.
2- The ECU calibration version is prior to the version Audi certified for sale in the US.
3- The ECU part number identifies this ECU as early. It is not the version later released and used in this vehicle.
4- The OBD readiness code is set for several functions immediately upon startup after clearing the code. Some of these functions are impossible to be set this way. Obviously they have been "hard-wired" to ignore normal setting procedures.

It is likely that the ECU is buggy relative to the TV issues we are experiencing. We all know there are issues with the TV - this has been documented for years in the forums. Audi even released a TSB regarding the wiring and connector to the TV being out of spec due to wiring resistance issues from materials originally used from various sources. You are suggesting of trying to isolate the ECU bug my disabling/bypassing all inputs to the ECU is an interesting exercise. Have you actually done this to prove the ECU is buggy? Or are you just trying to persuade me to do it? Can't tell your intent from your writing.

The class action lawsuit recently filed against VAG regarding this EXACT issue (pre-production fraud) unfortunately doesn't go back before 2011 for some reason. So it appears this car is not covered. You seem to be versed in this, do you know why? While it is obvious, I am not willing to invest a few million dollars to force this issue the VAG. I will be contacting the law firm that filed the lawsuit this week to a) let them know I have a car that is pre-production and actually falsifies ECU tests and b) ask why they didn't go back to 2006 where it is known that VAG started this behaviour. Has there been a remedy from VAG for early vehicles in this class? The news articles suggest that maybe there was a limited recall on such vehicles.

I am also tempted to confront AoA with my facts and findings and see if they will respond with a solution. The fact that my car actively falsifies emissions tests might get their attention in light of all the other things that have happened to them of late. Of course they could just ignore me too.

Interesting thread. Thanks for the fun.

Genius, absolutely genius? ....... :p

You are the retried Engineer right, now use the what was that quote, oh yeah, was it?," Good Engineering Judgement "?
I know I can be an asshole most times, but could you only begin to imagine what bodies I know or where they are buried and all the "Above Majestic" things that come with such security clearance level?

Tempted? :p
Is that the determination you solely made and did you verify it or capitulate your mistake for clearing codes if you made one, in regards to your aforementioned alleged purported falsifications?

Wouldn't it be kind of hard to ignore you, especially when a mere search of photos on the internet could be crosschecked for the alleged pervasive pattern if you chose to do it, no?
Fun indeed no, please let us know, okay?
