Headlight swap: Twin halogen to bi-xenon - Do I need new CECM/BCM?

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place for this question, but with the level of knowledge on this forum I'll give it a shot. I'm swapping the twin halogen headlights for a pair of bi-xenons (part no. 3AB 941 751 and 3AB 941 752) on a Passat B7 (European). I've read many tutorials, but there is one thing I cannot figure out: How can I verify if I need a new CECM/BCM module or not? Is it determined by part number/version (mid-line, high-line etc.), software version or something else? Mine is part no. 3AA 937 087 A, I'm pretty sure that's a high-line CECM/BCM.

you have a highline bcm so there is no need to replace it, you just need to code bi xenon and byte 18, since it's masked with 00 (you don't know real value) you will have to play a little to get everything to work 100%
for byte 18 try 65 in 70% of passats B7 it works ;)

I received the wiring harness for retrofitting bi-xenon headlights yesterday and that raised a couple of qustions...

1) I did a continuity test on all connectors and from that, and some wiring diagrams found on other forums, I was able to figure out where to connect all the wires. However, I did find something that did not seem right; The 10 pin headlight connector from the car connects to the 14 pin headlight connector on the xenons with adapters on the harness (one adapter for each headlight). According to wiring diagrams I have found from a newer Golf and Touran it seems pin 4 (DRL) on the 10 pin connector should connect to pin 12 on the 14 pin connector, but on my harness it is pin 8 on the 10 pin connector that connects to pin 12 on the 14 pin connector. Is there a difference between Golf/Touran and Passat so pin 8 is actually correct or should I change the harness so pin 4 connects to pin 12 instead?

2) My car has the DCC with electronically controlled damping and it uses a different leveling sensor than cars without this system. The 4 pin connector on the sensor I have is ever so slightly different so the connector on the harness will not fit, but with some careful grinding down I think this can be solved. I just wanted to ask if the pin-out is still the same? Pin 1 -> AFS T26/11, pin 2 -> AFS T26/10, pin 4 -> AFS T26/7.

3) I have not found a definite answer for how to power the headlights and AFS module and which fuse slots to use for this. In my head the headlights should be connected to constant +12V and the AFS control module should be connected to ACC, but I have also seen others connecting everything to ACC. Some use fuse slots 5 and 6, some use slots 14 and 15 - neither of these are vacant on my car. Slots 3, 8, 11, 17, 19, 20, 21 does not have fuses.

1. No, leave it as is. Check on your car, but i'm 99% sure your passat b7 doesn't have pin 4 for drl, when you code bi xenon your existing pin 8 will become DRL
2. i can't remember, but I think that dcc sends data to afs, check wiring in elsawin
3. You can use existing fused wire from 10 pin halogen connector, pin1 is +12V from SC1, so no need to add another fuse

Thanks m87a for coming to my rescue once again. I am both more enlightened and still a little confused.

1. I will leave pin 8 as it is.

2. I am starting to wonder if I may have overestimated the work necessary for this retrofit. I looked under the car today by the rear left wheel and I can see that there is a sensor installed that looks very similar to the leveling sensor I got for the xenon headlights. Does the xenon headlights use the same leveling sensor as the DCC system? This page seems to suggest just that: https://www.drive2.com/l/10174458/ (admittedly a Yeti, not a Passat)

Also, my current halogen headlights are stationary, but my fog lights are bending at slow speed. Does this mean that I already have the AFS system installed? In that case will the AFS control unit be located behind the glove box?

If both of the above is true (fingers crossed) then I guess I only need to install the halogen to xenon adapters and connect to CECM pins 48 and 49?

3. I do like the idea of getting power from the existing 10 pin connector, but why isn't the adapter made to do just that in the first place? I see that others that do this retrofit is adding extra fuses, why would they if it isn't necessary? Do you happen to know which pin that is ground as well?

yes, sensors are the same, only difference is in rear sensor between fwd and awd (4motion has different sensor), i don't know maybe you'll have to splice in the sensor and also connect to afs module, check that
No, halogen headlights don't have AFS, corner lights (currently your fog lights bending at low speed are turned on by bcm, which receives information from steering wheel module, steering wheel angle and bcm turns on light)
pin1 is +12v, pin3 is ground, pin2 is signal from potentiometer (this one gets unused, not required any more), i don't know why they get left out, but i have always used pin 1 & 3 when doing afs retrofit

Ok, so no AFS currently installed so I will still have to do that. Should I add a separate fuse for AFS? 5A/10A ACC? I will be modifying the xenon adapter to use pins 1 and 3 from existing halogen connector for power.

Now, about the xenon leveling sensor... ETKA lists this as partno 3C0 941 309 B (DCC + 4M). So today I crawled under the car to have a look at the sensor currently installed and what do you know - it is partno 3C0 941 309 B! I then released and dismantled the connector and found that pin 1 is brown wire, pin 2 is black wire and pin 3 is blue wire. The flow diagram I had downloaded from erWin confirmed this. I think I will follow your advise and splice into those wires, but rather than doing it by the sensor I will do it at the point where they enter the cabin. From underneath the car that appears to be somewhere near the base of the rear left wheel arch.

My concern now is that on my car pin 4 on the sensor was vacant, but on various retrofit guides I have found it is pin 3 that is vacant. This is probably due to the different sensor for DCC/4M as you mentioned, but how can I then know which wire goes where on the AFS? Is it just pins 3 and 4 that are swapped or have all three wires switched places?

Now I found this thread and it suddenly became clear what you meant when you were saying "i can't remember, but I think that dcc sends data to afs, check wiring in elsawin". In other words, if DCC is installed then you can instruct the AFS to get the signals from the CAN bus instead of wiring it directly to the leveling sensor. Is this correct or am I making faulty assumptions again? :p

for the fuse for afs you need to add or splice in one existing, meaning add one for AFS ;)
yep thats the thing with DCC and AFS, i would connect everything except sensor and test with coding to see if you really need to connect sensor to AFS, i'm 90% sure that you don't, but if you do need to you can do it inside the car where cable enters from wheel well

This weekend I finally got around to start this retrofit. Everything from getting the cables through the firewall (used grommet behind battery box) to adding new fuses and splicing into the CAN hi/low aaaall the way up there by the gateway was a f*cking PITA. Not complicated, just takes some time. I am sure there are better and faster ways to do this than what I did. I think the original location of the AFS headlight range module is behind the glove box, but I found it more convenient to place it behind the hood release lever panel. The missis asked me kindly not to put the car out of service for the next week so I will wait a few days to swap the headlights (in case of byte 18 issues etc.). Of course, I still have some questions :p

1. Is it pins 48 and 49 on the golden CECM connector that controls the high beam shutters for Passat B7 as well? I ask because on my car those places are already occupied...?? Am I then supposed to splice into those wires? If yes, is there somewhere more accessible besides by the CECM I can find those wires?

2. The installation of the AFS headlight range module is complete with power (ACC), ground and CAN hi/low. There are also two wires going to each headlight adapter, but as mentioned I still have the halogen lamps so the adapter does not currently connect to anything. There are no wires going to the rear left leveling sensor, I rely on this information to come from the CAN bus. Will the AFS module accept a valid coding even if the car does not have the xenon lamps installed yet? If yes, then I can spend some time getting the coding for this module correct now so that is already taken care of.

1. yes, and yes there is, when you remove your bumper, next to your fog light, yor current DRL bulb (when you code byte 18 this bulb will become high beam since it's connected to pins 48 & 49, you can leave it connected as is and leave bulb and use plus from it to power high beam solenoid to pin11, I have done this to a friend and he later replaced this bulb with led so when he uses high beams this bulb also lights up, like dual high beam, he also put led in fog light so pretty cool in the end)
2. NO, won't allow to code since it's missing communication with headlights, when you code AFS module it automatically code each headlight

Very good to know, thanks! Although, it could be that I will try to splice into pins 48 and 49 by the CECM after all (since the wiring is already fed into the cabin). The reason I hesitated is that there is limited space for soldiering and heat shrinking and I'm not a big fan of traditional wire taps (for reasons described here), but today I managed to find the only place in the country that sells Posi-Tap and although the principle is still the same it seems like a much better alternative. Comes highly recommended by some reputable auto shops.

I will not try to code the AFS just yet then. Will wait until the xenon headlights have been installed. I just saw this thread and it seems his setup is close to mine: 2011 Passat B7 (EU). Maybe I should use his final coding string as a basis for the CECM coding? Will post an update after I put the headlights in this weekend.

don't use his final coding string, thats a bad approach, always use original coding string and compare with his to achieve results.
also try this
Byte 14 check bit 3 Bi-xenon headlights (with shutters) installed
Byte 15 check bit 3 Daytime running lights (DRLs) inactive with turn signals
Byte 15 check bit 6 Daytime running lights (DRL) via separate lights active (This could already be checked)
Byte 17 check bit 2 Bi-xenon with additional high beams
Byte 18 (This is the light config and once you change there is no going back if it was 00 since this is just a mask, and use dropdown list in your case try 65, also off topic C2 is new value for ROW Caddy 2016 (bi xenon 25W led drl )not in drop down list)
Byte 25 check bit 7
Byte 25 check bit 2 High beams with shutters active/installed

Thanks! Will follow your instructions and let you know how it goes. Hopefully there are no major issues and that I can also get the AFS to accept leveling signals from CAN bus instead of directly from sensor :)

The sensor information is normal dc voltage that is going to range control module, it is NOT connected to CAN gateway. So unless you have wires going from the control module to rear sensor, it ain't gonna work.

Also for the high beam shutter, I don't think you need to splice anything. The same pins, if I remember correctly, are used to light high beams in twin halogen setup. So if you have an adapter at the headlight side, that should already pass-through the correct information.

And may I ask why you didn't put the control module to the designated location behind the glovebox? It's a pefect place for it as there's already a spot for it with all the pre made holes and everything. Now when you sell the car and the next person needs to do something with the lights, unless you document everything you've done very carefully, they will never be able to even find the module.
That's why OEM route is good as it then follows the manufacturer spec on installation and wiring.

I bought the wiring harness complete and have made some slight modifications to it (read thread for details).

Are you sure about that? In controller 55, byte 1, bit 3 the label text is "Leveling Information via Sensor(s) and NOT via CAN". Also, this thread seems to point in the direction that leveling information can be obtained via CAN. It could be that you need to have the DCC system installed for that to work, which I have. Then the sensor is sending signals to the DCC controller (as voltage) and the controller is broadcasting on CAN bus.

That's interesting. I would gladly avoid splicing anything if that's an option. One thing though; if pins 48 and 49 are in use both for halogen and xenon, wouldn't those places be occupied on all Passat B7's? On most retrofit guides I have seen they are vacant. How sure are you about this?

To be honest B7 is not that familiar to me, I've more familiar with PQ35 cars.

I'll check from ELSA what it says about the sensor and about the BCM shutter pins. I'll reply back here.

Ok, according to ELSA G76 is connected to J431 which is the headlight range control unit. However, it seems that with Dynamic chassis control it is already having that sensor and it's connected to DCC control box. So probably what you wrote that checking that bit in module 55 will use the data from DCC unit through CAN instead of direct connection to module 55 is correct and you don't need to wire the G76 again to J431.

What comes to the dip screen motor. In Elsa it says this :

Left gas discharge headlight unit :
V294, connector T14d/6 = Left dip beam screen motor is connected => BCM, T52a/11
V318 connector T14d/11 = Left dynamic cornering light control motor which is connected to BCM T52c/48

Right gas discharge headlight unit :
V295, connector T14e/6 = Right dip beam screen motor which is connected => BCM, T52c/52
V319, connector T14e/11 = Right dynamic cornering light control motor which is connected to BCM T52c/49

Sorry, now I don't understand? According to ELSA pin 6 on the headlight side is the shutter control for the Bixenon and those should be connected to T52a/11 and T52c/52 on the BCM side. pin 11 on the headlight is the cornering light (bend light) control motor connector.

But if m87a has done it like that then there's an error in ELSA.

I did not look what are connected to 48 and 49 in halogen setup. I think I should look that as well if it reveals something new :)
