particulate filter code fault code

Hello all,

I have been searching with little luck on this one... I have a gen2 3.0TDI Q5, running Malone stage 2 software. (LOVE IT!)
Emissions code light came on, vag-com scan and the following code:

29012 - Diesel Particulate Filter (Bank 1)
P226D 00 [237] - Damaged or Substrate Missing

I cannot find any info on this... I might initiate regeneration tomorrow afternoon - just see if changes anything.

I have cleared the code, and we will see if it comes back - hoping to learn what this one is.

Uhm, hardly.

I would speculate this fault means the ECU isn't seeing as much difference as it expects between from the differential pressure sensor.

I don't suppose you gutted the DPF?

I have not gutted the DPF. Only mod is the software.

Ref the sensors: I was thinking something along the same lines - hoping for a simple "if this, then that". But that was a dream!

I have been hunting the exploded views to find out how many sensors are on the DPF... and where. It looks like one on the top of the DPF and then another at the end of the CAT??? But then I find two O2 sensors? What sensors could be sending this info and what are they screwed into?

I had a 25k service due recently, switched from the Malone tune to the stock tune at 23.5k miles (prep and log for the dealer). All good at service and came back clear.

I put the Malone tune back on the day after the service (and cleared all software swap caused codes), and this popped up within 60 miles.

I have only driven 22 miles since my code clearing...

That is interesting - and I did think about that too. But, that would have popped up with the stock tune while I ran the prior 1500 miles in stock tune to prep for dealer service. (burned through is burned through, regardless of tune)

But, that leads to another path of digging: put car back to stock tune and see what happens - see if a tune's side effect is irritating the expected values.

How do I find out how the car knows the DPF is present? is it pressure? temp? soot? other?

Similar to Uwe's thought path, but with a process to test... and isolate a condition - maybe? If it only happens in malone mode, I could deduct it isn't physical, but rather software and/or sensor.

you have a lot of function restriction due to... try to clear all, drive and post full scan
also check soot level

Thoughts?

Yes, if you have the ability to revert it to stock, by all means, do so. Then clear all the faults and see what comes back.

Oh, and when you have faults like "Function Restriction due to Faults in Other Modules", it would make sense to post a complete Auto-Scan.

Quick update so you all don't think I have fallen off the radar... I really appreciate all the support and help here.

Still in tuned mode, the emissions light came on within 30 miles of last full clear. 4 codes, similar to what I posted above. I will run a full scan in the next couple days to document more miles and see if there is more info to help. At that time, I will also swap back to stock program (clear it all out for a fresh foundation) and leave it in for a 1k mile road trip this weekend.

See what happens and update next week. (I will post the full auto scan report this time)

Hello Again.
I have been busy logging hwy miles up and down the 5 between San Francisco and LA. I do love my road trips!

I have included three scans.
- the first (scan 1) is malone tuned with CEL presented
this is the last malone tuned scan
I installed the stock program and cleared all the lights/codes immediately after this scan/before the trip = clean baseline
- scan 2 is the first time I scanned after the light came on in stock. It only took about 130 miles to present the emission CEL
I cleared these fault codes shortly before driving home = clean baseline (again)
- scan 3 is the current condition in the car, emission CEL is on. It came on about 220 miles in the return last night.

I think m87a might have nailed it. I appear to have a case of the involuntary DPF elimination. I also hear a slightly different tone in the exhaust when I push on it. I also **think** I feel slight performance improvement; isn't that why maybe people do that as a conscious upgrade. (I am not trying to do that.)

Following that path of assumptions:
- what is the normal dealer approach to solving this malfunction at this mileage? ref warranty repair path
- what type of chastity belt did I undo in the software swap process? I am back in stock, it already has a ~400km logged fault code, what do they see as it relates to the tunes I had in the past?
- do I wait until after the final 3.0TDI ruling and get included in that first (I am registered, that's all we can do so far) before I ruffle those feathers?

if they see a tune they will try to blame it on tune no matter what

you did have a tune which could be putting more fuel, more ash, more regeneration which cause wear but then again it's too soon to burn dpf filter
it's up to your and dealer, hope you get it sorted
if they refuse you can always gut it and tune it out

Except that some tuners have figured out how reset the flash counters. :eek:

Sorry for the slow reply... I have been dealing with it slowly based on shop availability.

The short answer is, negative!

I have had two visits to a local shop that sells the tune and spends plenty of time on diesels.

We have confirmed, there is a DPF and it has substrate... it's not missing the filter.
We found a clogged exhaust pipe, small metal tube around the turbo. Cleared and no change.
Car is back to fully stock 100%.
Same independent shop spent a second day debugging in stock; with no luck identifying the culprit.

More to come; I will update as I get more time debugging.

I read this thread diagonally... but I assumed you flashed the ECU (for more power) with the DPF still installed.

If what I said is correct... fitting more power with a DPF still installed is not very good because it will be clogged extremely fast.

Now imagine if the tune file is for more power and assuming the DPF is removed. This means that no more regens will be performed.

So, my both hypotheses point to a blocked (or even destroyed) DPF. I believe that there is no turning back to save the DPF.

Update: just got the car back from 2+ weeks at the dealer.

They went through a lot different de-bugging procedures, logging miles after each attempt, and in the end they replaced the DPF under warranty. They didn't seem at all surprised nor too descriptive in the matter (and I didn't ask too much). I have already noticed a weekend with less soot on the silver paint.

Not a lot more to say - wish I had a little more to share.
