If you change the ABS coding, it will require you to perform these again.
So no need to calibrate these sensors until you have a valid ABS coding string that results in no more 'control module incorrectly coded' error

Forgive my stupid questions ... I've only had VCDS for about a week, this is all new to me!

So, when I'm changing the ABS coding, am I actually changing (rewriting) it in the ABS module itself? ... so it will communicate with the Jetta ECU? (through the CAN bus I assume).

I'm no expert no matter how fast and loose you want to play with the definition of the term, but have had to play with ABS coding quite a bit of late with an adaptive cruise retrofit.

Yes when you change the coding you are updating the EEPROM config in the ABS module itself.
ABS and ECU communicate with one another over the powertrain CANbus.
The ECU will log a fault in sympathy with the ABS to show that there is a DTC on the ABS. But once the ABS is clear of faults you can erase all other faults that may have resulted from the incorrectly coded ABS module.

I'll have to get into this tomorrow.

Many moons ago I put a 1968 6-cyl. Porsche flat 6 into a VW based dune buggy. 4 bolts held it in ... some ignition wires, generator wires (or was it an alternator?), and an oil pressure wire ... voila, it was done!

Ah, for the good old days of VW engine swaps!

I feel the need to be pedantic here. VCDS asks the software it the module to update the EEPROM. The software in the module has a lot of plausibility checks in it, as evidenced by the fact that it rejects some values. In any case, that's not the same as updating the EEPROM config directly...

Well, the VCDS is fine, I did three scans today. Don't know what the problem was yesterday.

I worked on the p2279 problem today. What's interesting is, if you disconnect the wire for the MAF/IAT ... the engine idles fine (probably in loop mode). I had another MAF/IAT sensor and switched them out ... no change. I also checked all the intake hoses, dip stick tube, and the air box ... didn't see any visible problems. I'll have to check the MAF/IAT fuse tomorrow, I forgot to do that.

With the MAF/IAT disconnected, I continued on my search for a working code for the ABS. I found that I don't actually have to start the engine to read the faults for the newly programmed ABS codes. But after going through about 100 codes ... I think I need to find better way, a more scientific approach ... this would take FOREVER!

I thought I read somewhere, that you can get VW codes direct from VW on-line ... is that true, or do I need to be a dealer?

What I don't understand is, before I got VCDS ... I had no faults or dash lights for the steering G85 ... now, after I've made some VCDS changes, I do have a dash light ... and no power assist?

At the end of the day today, I just disabled the ABS ... no more dash lights! I'll deal with the ABS later, after I get the engine issues resolved.

Here's my last VCDS scan of today (I had my interior light fuse out when I was doing my coding - I also have no idea why I'm now getting a clutch peddle code F36, I never had it before!) ...

To test a coding string for the ABS only takes 2 seconds, doesn't need an ignition cycle, and only needs terminal 15. You can blast through a lot of possibilities in a pretty short time...
Coding -> faults, new code -> faults, rinse repeat.

Kamold, forgive my ignorance (I'm a VCDS child!) ... but what is terminal 15?

You're basically saying that I "change the code ... check for faults ... change the code ... check for faults"? I've been turning the ignition off each time! Plus, I've never seen an ABS code that's less than 0010000 ... can't I start there? One more question ... I've noticed some posted ABS codes have a different WSC ... should I only use ABS codes that match my existing WSC? ... or should I change that as well?

Sorry terminal 15 just means you have the ignition set to accessories so everything is powered.
WSC (workshop code) should normally just be a non-zero value eg 12345.
Sure start at 1000 (not 10000).

eg set coding to 1000, check fault codes (control module incorrectly coded) go straight back to coding and put in 1001 then check fault codes again just flip back and forward between coding and faults for ABS only.

This technique is not suitable for all scenarios, some modules require a power cycle, some need to wait a set time to power off or so a soft reset. But it works for ABS coding...

Kamold, I've noticed in my scans that other modules (like CAN Gateway and the Parking Brake) have had their coding changed since my first scan (with the resulting "Control Module incorrectly coded).

I have never altered the coding for these modules. Are the coding changes to the ABS module affecting (changing) these modules as well? ... or is there something else going on? I HAVE disabled my DRL and TPMS ... don't know if that would affect coding for the above modules.

I'm just trying to wrap my head around how all this works.

Get a working coding string in your abs and then you will be able to sort out other modules which rely on it like epb.
Abs and ecu are critical modules. Unless they are happy everyone else is sad :(

OK, today I spent most of the day and went through about 500 ABS codes ... nothing that works without faults though. I had started at about 0013000 the other day, I'm up to about 0013800 now. I'll go back and try the numbers from 0001031 on if I'm unsuccessful with my present "needle-in-a-haystack" search.

I DID fix the engine miss ... it was the PCV Valve diaphragm that was torn (a common 2.5 problem). I just purchased the Dorman repair kit (PN 917-064) instead of the whole valve cover ($33 at Advance Auto). I cleared all the codes and it seems to be OK now.

Something else strange ... I did a VCDS scan at the end of the day, and the only steering fault was the "Steering Limit Stop Adaptation" ... the "Sensor For Steering Angle G85" is gone! Since the steering stop adjustment doesn't even require VCDS, just some steering turns, I did it ... and the steering is fine now.

I realize that if I ever get the ABS module coded ... I'll have to go through all the steering adjustments again.

What is your ABS Software Coding reading at the moment.............? Is it 0000000 or, any numbers.............? If its 0000000 than all your fault code for the Steering Angle Sensors will come back after ignition recycle..........

Just bear in mind that its possible that there isn't a valid coding string for the ABS module paired with that engine ECU...

The Passat ABS is a different type to the Golf/Jetta (supports EPB etc) - was that 2.5L engine available in a Passat in any market?

Ashraf6119, the present ABS coding is 0014020 ... that's where I stopped for today. Although I just disabled the ABS in the CANbus ... got tired of looking at the light! I found that when I re-enable it ... my last coding entry is still there. From my last scan (below) it looks like it's ABS coding from an all-wheel-drive Passat ... and yes, it looks like my Steering Angle Sensor error came back ... but there's no dash light!?

The coding may be for a manual transmission also ... because I'm getting a clutch peddle error.

Yes kamold, that's what I'm faced with ... I've searched and searched, and can fine no VW's with the 2.5L engine, that were paired with the ABS unit in my car. I would REALLY like to get the ABS/ESP working in this car.

As Uwe said, VW did put the 2.5L in the Passat in 2012 ... but I've checked on eBay, and the used ABS units for those cars is NOT the same as mine. From the photos, they actually resemble a 2008 Jetta ABS unit. But unlike the Jetta unit, the 2012 Passat ABS unit should be compatible with the EPB ... but it's probably not compatible with my 2008 Jetta/Rabbit/Golf ECU!

In the beginning of this project, I actually bought a used ECU from a 2012 Passat 2.5L. But I couldn't find anyone who could disable the immobilizer in the ME17.5.6 ECU. Apparently, it's a lot more complex!

Any other ideas how I could get around this? I REALLY like the car ... it drives great with the 2.5L, although it may have a little less HP than the 2.0t ... it's a smooth running engine ... AND no more HPFP problems to worry about! The advantage of the 2.5L over the 2.0t or VR6 is ... COST. I paid $600 for the car in boxes ... I've got about $1000 in the 2.5L engine, ECU, Fuel pump, and various conversions pieces ... but I sold the old blown 2.0t engine parts for $700 on Craigslist and eBay!

What sort of ABS module would the factory 2.5L Passat have?
Is it expecting a 3C0 614 109 or a 3AA 614 109?

Kamold, eBay has an ABS unit listed for 2012 Passat with 2.5L engine PN: 1K0 907 379 BK (that unit says "Steuergeraet ESP" on it, not sure what that means). I believe that's the part number of the ABS control unit, not the pump itself. That part number also corresponds to a genuine VW parts website called www.realoem.me

eBay also has an ABS unit listed for a 2006-09 Jetta (same as my ECU) and it's PN: 1CO 907 379 M (it also says "Steuergeraet ESP" on it). eBay also has other units listed for the same year Jetta, but the "M" suffix is different.

Physically, they both look the same ... although both are different than my present ABS unit PN: 3CO 614 095 S ... and they're different than the ABS unit I took off a 2008 Passat wagon 2.0t ... PN: 3CO 614 109 (don't remember the suffix) ... which is similar to the part number you listed.

So, if I purchased an ABS unit from a 2012 Passat with 2.5 engine ... it might work fine with the rest of the Passat system (I'd have to modify the mounting and line routing), but I'm not sure I could get it to work with the 2008 Jetta/Golf/Rabbit ECU. And if I purchased a 2006-09 Jetta ABS unit ... it would probably work with my ECU, but it would have no provision for EPB.

From the beginning of this project I had two goals ... I wanted the installation to "look factory" ... and I wanted everything to work properly (including the ABS/ESP). I guess I'll have to do some more research, there's got to be a way to do this.

Not sure the 3AA ABS module will support the CBT/CBUA engine, as it's not listed in Golfi-Vend's label file here:

If the NMS uses a MK60 ABS my (very limited) understanding is that these don't support an EPB.
I checked some reference scans of NMS and they don't have an EPB at address 53.

So if you install a 1K0 907 379 BK ABS then you'd need a manual handbrake perhaps...? But at least the ECU and ABS would be known to work together...
