After an eternity, I was finally able to purchase a genuine VCDS system. To try it out, and acquaintance of mine is having a great deal of trouble with her 2006 TDI

The back story....

Modifications: K&N drop in filter

Car had a dead battery. Battery was replaced, and upon starting it up the steering assist light (Yellow) was lit as well as the EPS light.

Car was driven to the dealership which in the end said the car needed a steering rack, G85 sensor, and possibly a new ABS unit

Car was taken to an independent mechanic which stated " There is nothing I can do with it because the steering angle value will not change"

As a last resort, I now have the car.

What I did:

Attempted basic settings. Confirmed that the steering angle basic settings will in fact not adjust. Checked the wheel speed sensors and after inflating the tires they all appear to be working with no faults present. I did see a rather odd graphing detail in Scope, where the driver side rear sensor is not graphing the same line as the rest however is appears to be displaying the correct road speed?

Charged the new battery to full capacity to rule out voltage issues

I ran the EPS test and a new code popped up for " Yaw rate sensor defective". Ran the test several more times and each time it failed.

I have another jetta with a known working sensor so I replaced it. No change.

Tried cold booting the system several times with no change

Basic settings for G85 keep displaying "Adjustment not possible"

Without replacing a bunch of stuff, I'm not sure how to continue. Ive read many horror stories on this very issue, in some cases its not resolved. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Im still learning VCDS so there is a ton of things im sure Im missing.

The only thing Ive managed to do so far is light up the ABS on the cluster due to the Yaw rate sensor lol

Ive included an autoscan. Hopefully its in the correct format.

You have system function test activated in ABS module. For that reason you are not able to do any basic settings. You need to finish that. It will then turn off the ESP light.
See here how to complete it : http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/ESP_System_Function_Test
Note! You need a big empty parking lot to do this.

You also have steering limit stop basic setting DTC on. For that you do not need VCDS. Here's how you do the basic setting for that : http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/02546.
Finishing this will turn off the yellow steering assist light.

I'm pretty sure you're steering rack is fine.

The initial problem of g85 not responding was present prior to running the ESP test, however what you are saying would indicate why it switched to " Not possible". I'm still a little unclear on how this test initiates. When you select it from VCDS and close the window, does it start then?. So far I have pressed the brake and see no changes in the status of the cluster lights. So I drive ahead and "Hope" its working. My problem is I never know if it worked or not, so I try another one with another test drive to try and clear it .

Ill work on it some more today. I'm guessing the system will go back to not responding to any changes in steering angle and I will go from there. It looks like Basic settings have to be completed BEFORE the steering stop adjustment correct?

The system function test is already activated and it will stay activated as long as you complete it. The instructions how to complete it are on the Ross-tech wiki I linked on my previous post. No need to do anything with VCDS now. Just do the steps.

Steering limit stop adaptation does not require VCDS either. Start the car on flat ground and center the steering, keep it there about 5 secs, then turn fully to the left and keep it there for about 10 secs, then turn it fully to the right and keep it there 10 secs, then turn the steering back to center and you'll feel instantly how steering assist comes back to play and steering gets lighter. Also the steering assist light on the cluster should go off. I've never had to turn ignition OFF to make the light go away. It has gone after the limit stops are done successfully.
See some notes regarding automatic transmission here : http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/VW_Golf_(1K)_Steering_Assist#Steering_Limit_Stop_Adaptation

I don't see any other issues with steering rack or with ABS module on your autoscan you posted on your first post.

OK. Now that I have a better understanding of how it works I will give it a go. I was reading through the dealership printout and it looks like they tried to set the steering angle and failed too. However this is the same dealer that told me I needed a fuel pump when the gas cap was defective so....

on a side note, I am pretty sure the G202 yaw rate sensor code is going to come on again. Wont that code prevent me from continuing?. I guess all in time. Thank you for the help. Ill post the results.

I found A large open parking lot to finish the test. One thing worth noting is that this car gives you no indication the test has started. No blinking lights, nothing changes. I guess you just go and hope. At any rate the test completed and the light turned off. Cleared the attached codes from ABS and tried basic settings and lock to lock test. No go. G85 still unresponsive. Much to my delight The EPS system test made its self known again. Is this normal? if codes are present do you just get stuck in an endless loop of system tests?. I ran the test again, shut the light off but this time in addition to the codes I have posted, I had implausible signal codes on all 4 wheel speed sensors. Laptop locked up while I was trying to save them.

So still no steering assist.

Hmmmm.... Try to get a full auto scan so we'll see what other codes there are. As you have MK60 ABS module, the sensor package is not integrated into it like in the newer MK60EC1. If I remember correctly, the ESP sensor module is under the handbrake lever inside the middle console. Maybe there's a faulty wiring or something like that. Also I would check the fuses that there are no burnt fuses due to the battery replacement.

Those faults you have there all indicate the sensor module is faulty. I still find it hard to believe :)

Ill get one tonight. I did go through the fuses, but I can always check again. Do you mean MK70 ABS controller?
The ESP sensor on this car is under the passenger seat, (2) 10mm bolts. I replaced it with a known working unit. Its just hard to believe a dead battery could cause all this grief.

Also, when I go to basic settings for G85 and attempt the ON/OFF/Next function, I get an error " Not available". Are you not supposed to use that button for this function?

I was doing the EPS test in a snowy parking lot, any chance wheel slip and shudder are throwing the sensors off?

Whatever this issue is, it appears that none of the sensors, lateral acc, yaw, speed, are working correctly, although when I single them out they read within limits.

ABS seems to be working, as well as traction control. Not sure on steering assist. I have it in my mk6 and mk5 Gtis and it feels like its doing something, just stiffer than usual.

Can Gateway coding issue is due to me messing with the radio faults.

I have always owned Mk1 and 2 up till this point so some of these functions are kind of culture shock.

Your car has MK60 ABS unit. MK70 is older unit which only has ASR no ESP. MK60EC1 is newer unit for mk5/6 which has the ESP sensor integrated to ABS control module. Also it supports a lot of stuff MK60 does not like PLA, ACC etc.

So, you replaced the ESP sensor unit and still having the same issue with yaw rate etc. sensors when trying to finish ESP system test?

Are you trying to do the G85 basic setting from ABS unit or from Steering assist module?
MK60 ABS you need to do it from ABS module basic settings. Instructions here : http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/inde...cs_(MK60)#Sensor_for_Steering_Angle_.28G85.29

I'm still worried about you not able to finish ESP system test. I think it does not allow you to do any basic settings or anything until it has finished. The ABS module is functioning in "restricted" mode.

Look here, someone else suffered from same issue : http://forums.ross-tech.com/showthread.php?2241-ESP-System-Function-Test

And here's another with successful resolution of the test : http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=424788

The shitty part here is that you need to complete the test, there's no way around it :(

Yes I replaced the module. At first ABS was just throwing the code for Yaw rate. The more I test it the more codes it seems to spit out. And after reading the links you sent, I am in fact stuck in the loop from hell.

I am doing basic settings from the ABS module, not steering assist although I can still see the G85 in steering assist module, wont change value in there either.

The test completes but as soon as all of those codes come into play it looks like it re starts. So I suppose one would have to take care of the reasons its throwing the codes or it will never be satisfied. The problem is the ABS module seems to be freaking out.

I've also found that the test will not restart unless I shut the car off and restart it. I've tried stopping with my foot on the brake many times, and every time I shut it off and restart it the test will initiate. as I said before I can sit with my foot on the brake for 10 minutes and never see a change in the status lights. Its rather annoying.

Is there any system settings in the ABS module that could have been lost when the battery died?.

Hmmm.. All the modules are error resilient against power outages so there shouldn't be any issues with the battery going dead. Usually if something happens, the ABS module loses it's coding. In your case no, you still have valid coding in the ABS module and it does not complain about coding problems.

Have you looked at the steering assist measuring blocks, does the steering angle and assist values change logically when you turn the steering wheel?

Also check the ABS wheel sensor readings once again from ABS module meas blocks. Just to make sure that the reading they're giving are logical and in line with each other. Faulty sensor could cause problems with the system test.

Yes. I have looked there, it will not change. There is logic change in the torque and speed values, but nothing for ANGLE. The status of the sensor is "n.Init" which I take to be NOT INITIALIZED. Its waiting for something.

I will checking the readings on wheel speed again. If I can figure out how to take a snapshot of the scope Ill post that up too.

Thanks for the help so far.

Took me a minute to figure out how to post a photo. Im not 100% computer literate I suppose.

At any rate, I went out tonight to see if I could force the EPS system test to complete

* I got it to complete 3 times in a row
* Then the cops showed up. I mean, someone driving in figure 8s in a school parking lot at 9 p.m? No worries.
* The test completed 3 times and each time started a new system test
* I noted that the ABS light will not trigger until I stop for at least 5 seconds. I can drive around until Christ comes home but as long as I don't stop, no lights.
* I sat there contemplating my mortality for around 5 minutes after an hour of driving in circles.

* So, I looked at wheel speed again. What else was I going to do?
* Can someone explain why the driver side rear ( That is the red one correct?) will graph a line when the car is sitting still? If this is correct I cant imagine that's helping my cause but my solid week of VCDS learning has yet to produce a logical reason.

* Is it possible to add the G prefixes to the colors? I know it seems pretty ridiculous to veteran users of the code, but it would keep me from guessing lol

* As it stands, the test goes right into incomplete now. I cant get it to initiate any more. Tried shutting the car off, waiting, mashing the brake pedal. It is just done for tonight.

* Is the waviness in the yellow one considered "Noise"? Is it ok? All of the sensors output reads within 1kph of each other. As far as that goes they are all very close

I guess I’ll have to pull the wheel off and check it out. I do think this issue is related to that previous post. I’d just like to understand from a software standpoint what I’m seeing.

The red one is the drivers rear correct?

What do you think vcds is picking up on? I would like to understand how it can graph a line with no motion?.

As soon as I start the graph the red line takes off horizontally.

At first I thought it was some sort of base line, but then I realized after shutting each sensor off one by one that it was actually a wss.

Honestly I haven't graphed my wheel sensors ever. I've just looked at the meas blocks. On my current car they show 0km/h when the car is on standstill and they logically increase when picking up speed. All of them show the same number so if one of your wheel sensors is that bad off, there's something wrong with that.

That’s what Is so sneaky about this issue. You CANT see it unless you look at them graphically. I don’t know how it happens but vcds might be picking up the anomaly and interpreting it in a way looking at the measuring blocks can’t. On the other post with this issue I think that guy didn’t see anything wrong in measuring blocks either.

They all read ok when I’m moving. Logically speaking in the output boxes. That red one is screwed up on the graph. The measuring block reads 0. The graph reads moving.

Which color goes with which wheel? I want to make sure I’m looking at the correct sensor.

Do the colors follow the order from left to right same as the measuring block values for g46,47, etc?

Is this common knowledge that I have somehow missed? Lol

I will continue to poke around at it but I don’t think I’m going to replace the rear speed sensor until I get some more input.
