I don’t have a lot to offer the thread, but I’ll give what I have and maybe some of it will help someone.

2015 Passat TDI SEL Premium. Replaced the RNS510 with the RCD330 187b. Pretty much plug and play other than the reverse camera which I am currently working on. Disabled NAV in VCDS which cleared most of the errors but there was no sound. Box 2 was set to 00 which is “no audio system”, trying to change it to anything gives error 31. Per other forums, unhooked battery and reconnected and now I have sound. Box 2 still says 00 which I find strange, but I’m not nearly as involved with VCDS as most of you. Was able to change box 4 to 40 which enables rear view camera and was able to disable treble monitoring. I read somewhere else that I had to put it in development mode to be able to mess with box 2, which I think I did, but it still wouldn’t accept anything other than 00, no audio system. Oh well, it works.

Couldn’t stand the USB being on the front so I tore it apart, cut the end off of a female USB cable and soldered it to the PCB and ran it out the back. Works perfectly and the new cable now comes out between the seat and center console which is perfect for me.

Having a few issues that I’m figuring are with the RCD firmware, and unfortunately, the buyer I got it from says the developer hasn’t updated it in quite a while and he doubts they will anymore. In fact, his supplier doesn’t even offer this system anymore so my guess is that the ones for sale are what’s left. I’ve been wrong before though.

So if you’re not completely bored yet, and not writing a flaming response to my ignorance, I’ll talk about the “non”VCDS issues I’m having with it.

Volume... It doesn’t seem to remember volume settings. You can set it as low as you want and the next time you start the car it is at about 1/4 volume, which is kind of loud at 6am. There are settings in the RCD to set maximum startup volume, but they seem to be ignored. I set it to minimum, and it still starts at 1/4.

Volume -2... any time you use Siri, when you are done and go back to music, the volume basically doubles up to a finite point. If the volume is up high, it doesn’t seem to do it. Sometimes I feel like it’s going back to startup volume and sometimes it seems louder. Siri works great though.

Volume-3... the sound is pretty good for the first 1/3 of the range, but starts to distort and not sound nearly as clear as it increases. This is what originally got me digging in VCDS to try to set it up correctly (as in fender). I believe from a pinout I saw that this has 4 speaker outputs and after looking at the boards inside, it doesn’t really surprise me that it distorts. My uneducated guess is that somehow the speaker level outputs are being used as the amps inputs (not uncommon)but then any distortion is of course being amplified. The RNS510 definitely sounded better cranked up.

Phone... whether tethered via lightning cable or via Bluetooth, the calls are not quite as clear on the other end. Not bad, but not as good as the RNS. The ringer volume is always way too loud and seems to be based off of the volume of the last call you made. Meaning if I’m on the highway at 70, and have the phone volume up, the next call I get will ring so loud I about jump out of the seat. My quick fix for this was to pick a very mild ringtone. Another annoying issue is that while we all know the mic will block out background noise, the beeps that occur when you push any button on the radio go through to the person on the other end quite loud.

Overall, even with the quirks, I’m quite impressed for 235 bucks. CarPlay works perfectly, capacitive touch screen is lightning fast, and it looks great in the dash, especially with no USB cord hanging out of the front.

Good writeup.

I've given up on my RCD330 as rely heavily on in-car handsfree calling. I've gone back to RSN510 with Telephone (J412) 5N0 035 729 unit. Apart from the good looks of the RCD330 there is nothing I miss to be honest.

Discovered a huge sound quality increase today by increasing the mbps of the Spotify and pandora streams. They were on standard (I’m sure to preserve data)and switching them to the highest setting made a huge difference. Having a love hate relationship with this thing right now. Price was right, but I would have gladly paid more to have the few minor issues sorted.

@Sasha, I’m kind of opposite of your situation. I use navigation quite a bit and as we all know, entering an address into the RNS is about as much fun as licking a hot soldering iron. I’m also absolutely in love with the CarPlay interface.

I like this attitude.

Hi guys,
First, I am pretty new here. Nice meeting you all.

Recently I upgraded to this RCD330+ 187B and I am having huge problem. My back cam and OPS are not showing on the screen. I am aware that back cam needs converter or change to compatible one. But for OPS I have no idea what to do next.

I have received VAG cable today and tried to activate 56.Radio but VCDS is not able to reach to this RCD330. I tried to unplug battery and reboot the head unit but still no hope. I believe CAN gateway is already talking to head unit since head unit is showing temperature and time correctly. Apart from that when I put gear in reserve, audio volumn is lowered as well.

What should I do? I need your guys help. Thanks in advance!

What should I fix? Maybe try swapping can high and low from head unit? Or my CAN gateway version is low? Thanks!

I have tried to change back to original can gateway and still the same. If I unchecked 56.Radio from can gateway, there is any error on can gateway.

Now I have no idea why gateway is not talking to Radio if checked in gateway installation list. From other hand, time and temperature are showing correctly on head unit which mean there is communication from gateway to radio. I am very confused.

Do I need canbus decoder?

I once wanted to buy this, but seller said it didn't have support for Dynaudio.

Been messing around with vcds settings with a rcd330g (aka plus) 187b unit installed in a mk6 golf r that had Dynaudio sound system and rns315 factory installed.

Looks like the way amps work, you do need to select a sound system in byte 1, or eventually things will crap out. The explanation is here http://www.vwgolf.net.au/showthread.php?2979-RNS510-Sat-Nav-Golf-R&p=79167&viewfull=1#post79167

Because the radio uses the same physical output wires (the speaker wires) for low level and high level output internally there is an electronic switch that switches the preamp to output to the speakers wires to go to the Dynaudio amp or the main Amp power amp output to the speaker wires (no Dynaudio).

So you can see if you leave it coded to Dynaudio the pre amps are driving their little transistors off to drive your huge speakers and eventually they will give up the ghost.

Apparently if an amp is fitted (dynaudio) the output stage power is 12db (which i am guessing the unit is set to now as the volume levels are greatly reduced compared to the RCD510). The output level needs to be changed to 26db via VCDS as shown in http://www.my-gti.com/1411

Now the interesting thing is of all the options available in byte 1, vcds won't accept (will through an out of range error) dynaudio or vokswagen sound systems. It does accept skoda sound system, but i still think the sound is worse than with the rns 315.

Question is, is the out of range error result of vcds lack of knowledge on the rcd330g unit, or does indeed mean that the rcd330g radio does not support any amp except skoda's ? And are the skoda and dynaudio amps any different? Will something break if setup one way (skoda sound system) or the other (sound system not installed?)

read in other forums that obdeleven will let coding byte 1 with 01 or 05. Is there a way to enable experimental mode or to force coding that byte on 56 radio?

Sure, you can change any byte you wish, whether it's documented or not.

before you go into the long code helper, there will be the long code string.

let's take the long code 01FF02A0

isolate the byte you need changing (i.e. FF in hexadecimal, so that is binary 11111111) you can find any hex/dec/bin converter of your liking. my personal favourite is microsoft excel, commands HEX2BIN() and BIN2HEX(). remember to always add an 8 and 2 in the parameters to have 8 decimal digits and 2 hexadecimal numbers.
then obey the order of bits to be 76543210. i.e. we need changing byte 5. then we'll have 11011111. convert back to HEX gives DF.

so the new long code is
01DF02A0

paste it back in the coding screen of vcds... and we're there. fingers crossed for the coding to be accepted.

This is disappointing as the audio levels with fender is the only reason I pulled this unit from my car. If anyone ever figures it out I will put it back in as I was quite happy with every other aspect of it.
