Eric; is it time to create a new more accurately named thread for the Log Reader?

I think they mean old hardware can't be reflashed to the new (550) firmware. I don't see why they wouldn't have put provisions to reflash the old hardware to firmware that's compatible with it, and your controller seems to be proof of that.

OK Julian, I've refreshed the links with 17.2.2.1 . This will detect your BEM part# and query extra information based on what I've seen our old 5052A do here after hacking the 4F script to make it execute the early 4E commands ;) The result won't be any different from the previous version at this stage, apart from taking a little longer at the beginning. It's extremely important that you set your debug to 1024 and send us the resulting file. Hopefully the info we glean will help in reverse engineering said script to understand how they interpret that data without having a matching car

Hi Eric;

BTW, I sent some new DLM logs and covering text to support@ yesterday evening ...

Thanks for the emails earlier today Julian. I now have a process to feed your data to the factory tool. Anything you can do to write records to that battery manager (Vbatt <12.5V or >50mA no-load current) with the date correctly set in the instrument cluster (and then send me debugs of it) would be a great help. Currently the tool claims the dates are invalid and refuses to calculate them. It appears there are records for 12.5V and 12.2V, as well as 50mA. No 1A or shutoff record.
It does look like you're going to be losing in terms of history functionality by using this old module, way less info compared to the 4F or 4E0915181C ones.

I'd hoped the earlier BEM would give me more messages on the DIS but it hasn't. :(

However, my 'going flat' is irritatingly intermittent, so the lack of DIS messages may be a true indication that the battery isn't going flat in the last few days. [I've just started the A8 this morning without problems].

I'm going to persist with the 'older firmware' BEM until the weekend, so I'll use the car and run the 'history reads' each evening and send you the DLMs. Even if I don't retain that BEM in the long run it will aid RT to try and get the log reading working for anyone else troubled by a BEM at that level.

Assuming nothing significant comes out of these logs, I'll then reinstall the original newer BEM and run the 'read history' with Debug set. If the data's significantly better, I'll probably retain that ECU for improved diagnosis.

Julian, using that stone age BEM is really not a great idea. It will cause you more trouble than it's worth as the software back then has been anything but stable. Audi explicitly instructed old modules to be updates (or if not possible) to be replaced, in fact dealers were supposed to do that with ALL cars. Short version, they knew those were really problematic.

I'd like to submit my history readings, but I can't open either of the two new versions of VCDS - I get an error message saying that RT-USB.dll is missing.

I'm using a Mac with VirtualBox emulating a Windows XP x86 machine.

Links updated with 17.2.3 for Julian :)
It should now produce something like this on the older BEMs (FW 230-240)
oMMoJkh.png

and equally importantly generate a history log file you can send us

You need to put the new EXE file in a folder with a pre-existing installation of VCDS.

Thanks Uwe. That got of the error message, but the app won't startup. I'm assuming it's because VCDS isn't connected to the car, just the USB port. I'll try it again tomorrow, hopefully with some results to post.

If you would like to test the new possibility to view Battery History files, that are made by the Beta VCDS, published by Eric, here.

The VCDSToolbox installer can be downloaded here.

Run the installer, there are 2 history files installed in \Logs, if you don't have made some yourself.
After installation, there is a simple help, pressing [F1].

Please send as many history files as possible, so we can see if there are versions with other data or formats.

If you have history files (and maybe Autoscan files), you can send them as usual to support R..T com, or you can also use the button [Sendscan], that is above the [B. History] button.
Sending that way, takes just a few seconds.

Correct. 0 hours under 12.2V and 0 hours under 11.5V though. You had 20+ hours each time under 12.5V on 1/22, 1/20 and 1/19. Probably many more times before then if it could remember more :)

Forgot the quick instructions.

  1. Click [B. History]
  2. Click [Open Hist.file]
  3. Find the "Hist-*.txt" file you want to view
  4. [Arrow down] to the Record you want to view (you can also use the mouse on the pull-down menu)
  5. [Arrow down/up] to view the lines in the chosen Record.
  6. If there are yellow fields, you can move the cursor over it.

Hi Eric; a couple of points:

1) On my earlier BEM logs you actually print the voltages against the entries and you 'knew' the values because you checked the ECU against a VAS5xxx. Have you checked the 'newer' BEMs with a VAS to see that the different levels are set the same?

2) I ask because I would have thought most modern cars would struggle to maintain 12.5V with alarms etc. so 'dropping below 12.5V' is not a great issue or one that warrants a record in the BEM.

Just run the new beta and that's exactly what I got :D
And just for info. here's a log from the same car with a later revision of the BEM ECU.
