I will get the scan an post it up as soon as my wife gets home with the car.

With regards to the firmware, is there any site that the current revisions can be looked up, similar to GM's TIS site that allows anyone to enter a VIN and get all the current calibration versions? I assume updating it will require either going to a dealer or someone that specializes in VW - I imagine it uses a J2534 device, which I don't have...

I can help with the update that is of current release via my contact form.
I want you to run this car down the road in third gear at 4000 RPM for 3 miles with cruise control used.
Lets see if that cleans up the OXS.
Otherwise we may have to remove the OXS sensors and clean them with sodium hydroxide, and distilled water, further burning them off with propane torch for particulates from impurities.

Well, I did that last night, and my wife said on her way to work this morning, the check engine light came on... So we will see what it's unhappy with when she gets home tonight.

But dumb question: IF one or both sensors were dirty and thus not performing properly, wouldn't the ECM detect that and throw a sensor range/performance code?

Not a dumb question........

Well yeah if you were thinking of how the specification is supposed to turn on an MIL sure :D............,however, because AG played with this, and for such things as the OXS being ignored to a degree due to problems, ...........it takes forever to push the MIL within the adaption table limits.

You can review TSB's to verify what I reference with the first flash update.

Lets find out what the fault is for first ...........before we speculate.

I can tell you Eric's car here from RT had a OXS code and we successfully cleaned his like I aforementioned, when the DTC came up for the second OXS sensor B1S2 becoming slow or dead.

The CAT test needs that second OXS sensor to see that the CAT threshold is within table limits........whether lawful or nefarious.

Based on feedback in my posts here, it seems the high pressure egr is borderline, at best, so my issue could be that the LP filter clogged in less than 1500 miles, or it could be the HP EGR that is tripping the P0401...

Clean EGR's and DPF all EGT, exhaust flap, and OXS sensors or run it hot for a few days in low gear.

Magical chemicals .........

I'm going to try to clean the EGR valve this weekend. I'm a little leery of cleaning it due to a report of 50% failure after cleaning, but on the other hand, if it's clogged and/or sticking, it's not doing much good... The flap I'm 99% sure is fine - when I replaced the turbo, I checked it and I was able to rotate it closed and it snapped right back to open when I let go.

I got the EGR out and cleaned up today. It wasn't as gunked up as I was expecting it... and the CEL went away yesterday, but of course the P0401 is still in memory.

Before I go down the path of trying to get noxious chemicals or buying new O2 sensors, is there something else we can do that will get the checks working right and alert me if there actually is a sensor not working right, such as either a VW update ir maybe an aftermarket emissions compliant tune? It's been recommended to me that I get an aftermarket emissions compliant tune to help get this sorted out. In your sig, it appears you fo tuning - do you offer tunes via something like a Flashzilla?

At the end of the day, I know it's going to need a DPF, and I'm not sure if the P0401 is due to the LP EGR filter becoming restricted or if it's from somewhere else - but the problem at hand is getting readiness monitors to set, and I'm pretty sure that any EGR issues are not what's causing that particular issue. If we could get the monitors to complete, then if the P0401 could stay away long enough, we'd be golden... With the 'goings-on', I'm not dropping the coin on a new DPF...

Let me make this "very" clear.....
There is no such thing in the USA for this vehicle, nor registered with CARB in CA or the EPA...... for an emissions compliant tune by the aftermarket.

If someone bulllshits you and says they are or is ...........have them show the EPA approval or conformity certificate amendment.

I do not tune cars for the public roads, and this is clear in my signature.....and the tuning you reference I don't do at all.

Only a factory approved flash that was released by VW is permitted.......in this case version 9971...... go to the dealer and demand it.

I didn't say to change OXS sensors, I said to clean them.

A propane torch and distilled water will suffice if concerned about chemicals.

You won't need a DPF if cleaned correctly.........and if you do they're only $249 USD now at the VW dealer retail.....just find a dealer that respects the actual price change and use your credit card VW gave you.

I realize you are frustrated, however, it only costs time to clean this shit.......stop trying to cut a corner even though Wintercorncobb did.

Maybe 'emissions compliant' is the wrong term, but what was recommended was an aftermarket tune that kept all emissions components intact, any details past that I do not know (I do, however, know a little more about Duramax tuning - and I emphasize 'little') ...

I apologize if I read it wrong, but your sig says 'Specializing in Custom Service/SMOG Updates/Data Transfer/Off Road Tuning Only! & Parts' - I assumed that 'smog updates' were factory updates, as per your own statement, anything less would not be legal and really could not be considered a 'smog update'.

If you can give me some ammo to get a DPF for $249, I'm game... but I have never, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, seen a DPF for much less than $1000 plus core (and that's probably a burned out reman). The last dealer quote I saw was north of $2k (parts only). Id probably fall out of my chair and crap myself if a dealer quoted me $249 for a DPF... The DPF is most definitely cracked (First cracked DPF around 70k, and now #2 @ or before 105k) and cleaning it will not solve it's problem - from everything I've read, soot simply can't get past the DPF any other way, and a new EGR filter installed in June has a nice soot coating in it already, in less than 1500 miles. So it's cracked. Seemingly bad, since dealers have been known to replace just the filter, which generally lasts at least a few months, from what I've read....

If it wasn't for this whole 'dieselgate' thing and having NO clue what VW was going to do, although I'm against all this emissions BS that is shoved down our throats, with no real proven benefit (with a DPF, soot is CARBON.... the building block of life - it will settle to the ground and continue degrading, returning to nature... and has anyone considered the health effects of the smaller ash particles that I can promise DO escape?? Hint: the smaller particles can get deeper in soft tissue. And on top of that, has anyone considered emissions during regen??? I've been behind DPF equipped vehicles during regen, and even diluted and 'filtered' through my cars HVAC, it STANK and was noxious as hell - that CAN'T be good.... Back in July, the first real regen I got the car to do, when we came to a stop after some highway time at 2k+, my wife commented 'I hope that's not us', referring to the eye burning stench...... it was... Again, how is this beneficial, when the regen vapors have the same effect as noxious chemicals?), I would be less against buying a new DPF... but with the current events (and based on every price I've ever seen), I'm NOT spending $1000+ to replace this DPF and likely other components that will very possibly be replaced AGAIN by VW should they come up with a solution. And if they don't come up with a solution and buyback is mandatory, then I can say with certainty that the costs you paid to keep it 'legal' in the interim will NOT be added into whatever they pay for the car. Hell, IMO, VW already owes me $2k for the turbo failure as I have little doubt it was caused by the stress caused by the DPF - It's a funny thing - My 04 truck with no DPF has 200k and no turbo failure... but it seems turbo failures in DPF equipped Jettas are fairly common.

We just paid this pile off - if it wasn't for the fact that we can't get into another car payment, I'd drive it to the nearest Chevy dealer and buy her a volt. VW should be nipping this in the bud and buying vehicles back NOW for full purchase price, and anything less than full purchase price for a buyback is unacceptable....

The other option, although I've been told DON'T DO IT is to get a estimate to fix the problem, and in this state, it's like $500 repair estimate to get an exemption, but take it to a dealer, have them quote the fix (DPF, EGR Filter, ???), $3k+, and get an exemption.....

And yes, I'm frustrated. This emissions crap is shoved down our throats, and WHEN it fails (NOT if), it's OUR dime (well, more than 'dime') to fix. If they want this crap on these vehicles, that ABSOLUTELY DOES fail, with regularity, then it should be LIFETIME WARRANTY, END OF STORY (By contrast, my '95 Cougar has all original emissions components, no failures whatsoever... Currently running on a 2004 PCM.... so 20+ year old car with no emission component failures vs 6 year old car with multiple failures....). Otherwise, they should piss off. The new trucks with pig piss and such. The biggest complaint and failure: emissions crap. the emissions result in more side of the road time than anything else. The 'EPA' is completely batshit crazy off the chain out of control..... If it's remotely emissions (VW tried to say EGR filter was not emissions at our 70K DPF failure and tried to not cover it), then it should be lifetime warranty. End of story, case closed, have a nice day. I really suspect you'd find a lot less people hardcore against this emissions BS if it was all covered under a lifetime warranty.. But at the end of the day, this crap is forced on us, it FAILS, and WE have to pay to replace it or 'be in violation'... If we don't fix it, we have a multi thousand pound paperweight that we paid thousands for... Anything shoved on us by the 'EPA' should be lifetime warranty... end of story... So I beg you to forgive me with regards to wanting to 'cut corners' with regards to this crap.

I SOOO wish we could have found her a 2007 TDI, and you will NEVER see me in anything newer than an 07 classic GM truck... Assuming I don't revert to an 04 (or older) LB7 federal emissions truck... Unless the 'EPA' is disbanded and this BS goes away... There's a reason my 04 LLY is not on its original engine (CAT plugged and melted things...)....

I know you didnt' say replace OXS sensors, but technically, cleaning and replacing have the same general effect... just one more expensive than the other. As far as cleaning the OXS, any details on the 'how'? And I don't have a propane torch, but I do have Acetylene... Would that be too hot? The cleaning O2 sensors things I've read say soak them in gasoline... And I've looked in to as man options as possible for the cheapest option to replace them, and buying them using what's left of our VW dealer credit was among the options...

At the end of the day, I want to know why the hell the remaining two monitors won't set. Is it because the car is running old firmware? Fine. Is there some other reason? Fine.... but before I go screing with the O2 sensors, I would like something more than 'maybe'... if I can get the ECM upgraded and it comes out and say's 'x' sensor is bad or out of spec, fine, but with all things considered, I don't want to jack with them unless data shows they definitely are having issues and require intervention or replacement...

I certainly do not mean for my frustration to come out on you, and I hope you do not feel that way.

You have every reason to be upset and I am just as upset......... if not more upset than you.

NIX the acetylene idea it's dirty.....as is map gas.

A butane or propane torch can be had for peanuts.......... and to light your bowl you will need to calm the hell down.

Now take all of it out and clean it wearing protective gear.
Do so in a 5 gallon bucket or less, because anything under 5 gallons is not a spill by DEC or EPA standards, & for transport & to a proper disposal area.

Weld the crack shut by someone qualified or wrap a clamp around it with sheet metal barrier.

You have your options and yeah it will take some work.......I'm trying to help you, however, I don't have a magic wand, nor can I grant wishes......at least not here!

The tuning stuff I just like to be clear on & with continuity!

Not saying to use this ..........just information.............The quick and clean of dirty DPF bitches!

In addition to sodium hydroxide and water, distillates such as gasoline and kerosene have excellent emulsifying properties, as does paint thinner spirits such as Naphtha etc.

Engine not running cold.

I have observed people filling the system with a distillate and letting it break down all carbon with ease, than blow an air whip through the system and it magically evaporates.
The sludge is than caught before or even after the CAT in a bucket.........

As you said it's just carbon............always remediate and work with solvents in a safe means.......or don't do it at all.

Oh and FYI community .......One day there was a fire!

A DPF is documented as having and can cause a car to catch on fire and by design!
It seems to me that if this happened the car would be totaled by the insurance company and the customer paid out.
If this situation happened to happen ............ be sure to buy vehicle back so you can continue your suit with VW to return the carcass for refund later!

The (metal) casing of the DPF is not what is cracked - the substrate inside is what is cracked, allowing soot past and clogging the EGR filter, which is where the P0401 is coming from, and that's not repairable.

The front sensor did get soaked with oil after the turbo failure a few months ago, so it's not impossible that it's gunked up - I will attempt to clean it out... Is there any particular method to cleaning these sensors? It seems like the sensor would have to be inverted in the solvent to allow air to escape and the solvent to get in there. They're not exactly like a spark plug where you can scrub them clean (pretty sure that even if you could get to the element, scrubbing it would destroy it).

Show pictures or this is BS..........

RTFB and search the web/forum........

FYI: EGR units deal with soot directly, and has its own remediate pipe filter/manifold before and after DPF.

Can't exactly take a picture of the cracked substrate, but this thread has plenty of info on the subject.

low pressure EGR filter (which does become full of soot with a cracked DPF, since the DPF is supposed to catch the soot before entering this tube), and a representative cracked DPF.

this particular low pressure EGR filter (aka tube) was opened up and the filter/screen material replaced by a fella. purpose to catch more soot without clogging, avoiding the P_0401 error without repair of the cracked and leaking DPF.

The only time this happens is when gross negligence takes place for ignoring an MIL!

In my case it would be VW's fault, because VWGoA stated to the EPA via forged instrument, and these lies, that these faults didn't turn on an MIL, however, the EPA failed to listen to me, or even observe the factory repair manual.

If the MIL comes on, and we can't adapt or correct a problem based on the OBD2 Specification; than VW-Audi itself is in violation for using the spec, to not only convolute the repair process, however, make it so that they can only do the repair!

That is not only unlawful of the CAA, it is a monopoly being an unfair competition scheme, & to cause interference with the owner of the car, aftermarket scan tool manufactures.... such as RT or independent repair shops.

All I can say is............. I am extremely disappointed in both the manufactures and government at this time.
I will not go unheard & you will have to kill me...............

Additionally to all news agents or reporters that keep asking me the question below!
" How is it you first knew that something was happening and what indicated to you that the car was producing higher levels of emissions"?

The MIL!
Than the fuel gage in relation to MPG being driven with it forced to be on by aforementioned VW act and EPA denial!
Than the DPF pile up for SOOT observed in VCDS measuring blocks and the related DTC's for above fuel consumption!
Than the actual failure of this......sensor that sits on my tool caddy as a paper weight for monitoring the DPF
Part # 03G-906-051A Made in US! Date of production on sensor 11/08 VWAG
