The HEX-NET is in fact much faster, in some cases up to a factor of 5 times as fast. While it's already faster than the HEX+CAN when connected via WiFi, it is again faster when connected directly via USB.
Examples from a 2015 Audi A3:
HEX+CAN = 04:36 min
HEX-NET (via USB) = 01:35 min
Examples from a 2014 VW California:
HEX+CAN = 03:55 min
HEX-NET (via USB) = 02:16 min
HEX-NET (via WiFi) = 02:31 min

Has this VCDS 16.3.3 been released yet? I'm still trying to figure out why I can't add ACC default distance to the MMI in my A4 B9 (USA) while everybody else seems to be able to do that.

HEX-NET and HEX-V2 should have similar performance as they are based on the same base electronics. Both are faster on CAN based cars than our previous generation wired products. On K-Line based cars, there is little discernible gain.

My question is likely due to the fact that my inexperience with K-line based cars isn't good, but your comment above suggests that the speed-constrictor when diagnosing these cars lies somewhere other than the cables. Is my assumption correct, and can you tell me what the limiting item is on K-line cars - please?

Initialization that happens at 5 bits per second. That's a full two seconds at absolute minimum to start a session. Plus the requisite quiet time on the K-line before hand. And mandatory re-tries if nothing answers after the first attempt. Then the communications happens at blazing speeds that can be any arbitrary bit rate between 240 bits per second and 10,400. Not to mention that the original KW1281 protocol required byte-for-byte acknowledgements in each direction. Plus mandatory delays after an entire packet is received before you can send the next. When I first looked at how all that worked in 1999 (when VW was still entirely KW1281 on K-line), I was utterly aghast. I figured the only explanation was that a group of engineers got roaring drunk one Friday evening before the came up with the specs for this.
