Here is a quick run down. New customer has car towed into shop. 2010 Passat CCTA TSi 2.0, DSG. Car has cam correlation code p0016 and abnormal chain noise and misfire codes on all cylinders. I used DrPeter's quick reference procedure and measured the distance between the cam sprockets with the engine at TDC. That looked ok. 125.5 mm between the sprokets. The distance between the bridge and the intake mark was slightly under spec by a few mm it measured about 59-60 mm. I checked for bent valves with a leak down gauge then did a compression test. All looked good. The customer said the oil light came a few times in the past week just before the car started having problems so I hooked up the oil pressure gauge. It was 25psi at idle and increased as I rev'd it up so that appeared acceptable. According to the customer oil was checked both times the light came on. One time it was a quart low and the other time it didn't require oil.

I decided to remove the lower timing cover and install the latest chain tensioner with the K suffix and a new cover. Once removed, I noticed the oil deflector on the inside of the cover was making contact with the chain in two different places. The center deflector was almost cut in half. I installed the new tensioner and retimed both chains. I noticed with the upper cover off the cam chain wanted to jump off the sprockets when the engine was turned over by hand. I contributed this to the tensioner not having been pressurized so I cranked it over with the upper timing cover off and that stopped once it had oil pressure. Once the car started up it immediately started to misfire but no correlation code. I was getting misfire codes on 1 and 4. I have swapped out the plugs and coils with known good parts as well as the cam sensor. I also blocked off the oil/air separator to get that out of the equation. After running the car for a few minutes and trying different things. I noticed the correlation code had come back. So I took the top cover off and measured again. Still looks good. Still has good compression. The car runs for about five minutes without throwing the cam correlation code. This makes me think the car doesn't recognize the correlation problem until the ECU is in closed loop. Does this sound plausible?

I have another car in the shop that is identical year and model so I looked at group 91 in the engine controller and made note of how the cam adjuster functions with relation to the data blocks. After looking at the problem car again I realized that the cam adjuster is not functioning at all. Group 91 block two is 5.9, three 28'kw, four 28'kw. All blocks except 1 RPM, stay constant even with increased RPM. I have since taken the N205 valve out. It looks good and is not stuck. I also removed the aluminum bridge between the cams to inspect the screen and make sure nothing was plugged up and that looks good. Reinstalled after inspection and car runs the same.

Any ideas what might be going on with this engine? The owner is already crying about the initial cost of repair. I have too much time involved already and the car still doesn't run right. Should I pull the pan off and inspect the oil pickup tube? Could the chain be stretched? Could the fluted actuator be jammed up? I found a VW self study program #246 it says "If the vvt fails to function the fluted variator will be pressed by the oil pressure to the basic position of 25 ATDC". I think this is the 3 and 4 block in 91.

I have installed the updated tensioners and retimed a few of these now in the past month but haven't run into this issue yet. I replaced an engine recently in a GTI that had a CCTA engine and the cams were nearly seized into the head from lack of oil. Could something like this be happening. The last bearing on the oil bridge that supports the end of the exhaust cam looked good and was not scored. I am running out of ideas here. I know the measurement between the intake gear mark and bridge are slightly off its making me think the cam adjuster is stuck. Can I actuate the valve adjuster with the engine not running? Thanks in advance.

Quick update. I pulled the oil pan and there was a fair amount of both metallic particles in the oil as well as the "coffee grounds" from infrequent oil changes. Most of the coffee was under the oil pick up leaving me to conclude they settled after shut down. Nothing as severe as the old 1.8t motors. Also the oil was just changed only a few miles ago when the other shop had it. I think infrequent oil service and starvation hurt this engine.

Hello,

Any ideas what might be going on with this engine?

Could the chain be stretched?

- It is possible there is a chain issue. The only way you can really tell if it is stretched is to take it out and compare the length to a new chain.

- Oil pressure may not be 100% at the Intake Camshaft Adjuster or the adjuster may have issues.
- If you have not replaced the control valve, this could also be of concern, I personally replace it when I replace the chains, guides, cam bridge, etc.

Can I actuate the valve adjuster with the engine not running?

- You can perform the output test of the N205, this will simply activate the electromagnet and push on the control valve.
You still need hydraulic(oil) pressure to activate the adjuster.

- Run the Basic Settings test, select Group[094] or from the pull down menu "Camshaft Adjustment (Intake)", press [On/Off/Next] when the engine is running, field 4 should display the results.

- One last note, I dig into these engines with the attitude that 'I might as well"... remove, replace, reseal, etc.. since I am in there.
Because I know if I do not replace something, it will usually come back and bight me in the butt, I do not like that ;) - Yes it does cost more, but you know you have done the job right.

Hope this helps,

Peter, thanks for taking the time to reply. As a fairly new business owner I need to get into the habit of covering my a$$ a little better sometimes. Occasionally, I get customers that cry about the cost of everything so I tend to recommend the bare necessities. I have cleaned the pan and oil pick up and sealed the oil pan back onto the car. When you say control valve I take it you are referring to the N205 that threads into the intake cam? I didn't replace it but I check its movement and made sure it wasn't restricted due to debris. I also removed the cam bridge and the screen was in place and clean. I am putting the car back together now but I will check the basic settings and see if I can get the adjuster working again. I am starting to see more issues with these engines as the miles increase. I have a feeling the problem is in the adjuster at the end of the intake cam. I don't want to recommend any further repairs with this customer as this has been a negative experience from the get go.

Thanks
Josh

Peter, thanks for taking the time to reply.

- You are welcome.

When you say control valve I take it you are referring to the N205 that threads into the intake cam?

- The control valve controls the oil pressure to the Intake Camshaft Adjuster via the N205's actions.

You can do an image search for [06H109257A] on the internet, that maybe the correct part number for your application,
not 100% sure, check with your parts distributor for the correct parts/numbers.

That part needs to work 100% correctly, all the time the engine is running.

- You will also need the Control Valve Assembly Tool for proper removal and installation.
The above tool webpage is where most VW/Audi dealers order their tools from.

Thanks Peter. I have the tool and removed the 06H109257A valve and inspected it. I also have one on my desk right now that I took apart that was in a blown motor. It seems as long as the inner part of the valve is moving freely it should do its job. But the part is completely dependent on good oil pressure and like you said must work 100% of the time. I think most of the metal came from the chain rubbing on the inner deflectors of the lower timing cover. I have already recommended an engine replacement to the customer so she is taking it away. The car is in overall poor condition inside and out and was clearly not maintained properly. Its supposed to leave this week. This customer and vehicle were a total waste of my time, lesson learned.

I have bee working thru a similar problem.
2009 Tiguan CCTA engine.
Completely gone thru, rebuilt head, new timing chains, tensioners, oil pump, water pump, coils, plugs, cam sensor, crank sensor.
Well it ran great for 300 miles then thru misfire codes and cam crank sensor related codes that we are all familiar with. Ran great down highway but very hard to start and idled rough.
I removed the N205 thinking it could be activating at idle and depressing the valve. On a whim I tried to start the car with it removed. I was happy when it started up and idled perfectly. When I pushed in on the valve I could modify the cam timing and reproduce the rough idle. I was leaking some oil so didn't run long like this.
What is strange is that the n205 in its deactivated state pushed in on the adjuster enough to a cause the rough idle. It was as if the adjuster moved out toward the n205 or the n205 failed and moved in toward the adjuster? Can the camshaft move out? Can the n205 be bad? I still need to run the basic output test and check it. For now I fabricated a shim to move the n206 out about .060" and replaced the 3 screws. Now the car runs great. Nice idle, nice on highway, easy start, 25mpg... I start to wonder how many cars out there could idle nice and start better if this was adjustable. I will know more after the basic test to see if the actuator works like it was intended
Stay tuned.

Gpeterso, is your car throwing any codes? Also, what is the reading in group 091 block 3 and 4? I believe that was the measuring block that shows the cam actuation. I didn't try removing the magnetic solenoid while running, if I run into that problem again I'll give it a try. The car that was causing me grief went away last week, the owner was going to trade it in.

Jack, could you explain how oil is regulated on the TSI or how to test it?

So here is an update on that lousy Passat that was such a headache. As I stated above, the engine had jumped time and I retimed it. Something still wasn't right and it idled like crap. Observing measuring block 94, I believe that was the block, the cam actuator wasn't working. I removed the cam bridge and checked the screen, removed the oil pan cleaned out the crud, checked the N205 to make sure it wasn't hanging up and tested the magnetic solenoid. The owner was pissed off that retiming the engine didn't fix the car and that it would require more money or a new engine. She also started saying that she hadn't authorized anything so I got fed up. She told me she was going to trade it in so I only charged her for the parts and said good riddance in order to avoid possible negative feedback on my business. Well she called me the other day to tell me what happened with the car. This time her attitude was totally different and she was actually pleasant to deal with. She also thanked me for everything I had done. Well the dealer offered her $1,000 trade in value for the car. She mentioned to me that she owed something like $9k! It looked like a $2500 car due to the condition and that's not considering the running state it was in.

The dealership suggested they could fix it. Well, the car is still at the dealer 3 weeks later but they supposedly figured it out this week after replacing nearly everything! I have the invoice here, the customer dropped it off so I could look at it. Supposedly, they replaced all the chains, the lower crank sproket/cassett, both tensioners, all the chain rails, numerous bolts and screws, and air/oil seperator. They also charged her 3 times for "sealant" totaling $227...ouch! After all that and a $3200 bill the car was not fixed. They called her to say that they didn't fix it but they now know that the scroll valve is bad and they will replace that for free. There is no mention of a scroll valve on the invoice or a part number, etc. So what did they change? The N205, the cam adjuster/intake sprocket, both? Also, it doesn't seem that the dealer would replace a part and not put it on the invoice unless, they want it to appear that the parts they changed fixed the problem.

800 miles later. Engine is working great. N205 functioning properly, shim is still in place between the solenoid and the n205 solenoid mount. I have not removed the n205 to check for contamination that would prevent it from traveling in further but I don't think that is the problem anyway. I may just leave the shim in place and not worry about it.

I'm having a very similar problem with my 2010 Gti. My chain tensioner failed so I ended up rebuilding the head. The timing is correct as near as I can tell, everything measured out fine. The engine idles and runs very nicely until it warms up and the ecu goes closed loop. I get a p0341 code which is for cam position sensor, implausible signal. I foolishly replaced the sensor and then the harness due to problems with another connector.

What the car is doing, after it warms up, when I come to a stop and go to take off again, sounds diesel'ish upon moving. Kind of acts sluggish. The "service engine soon" light flashes and goes off and once I get above say 5mph the car is fine again. The only problem I'm having is when trying to take off.

According to VCDS the possible causes are the cmp sensor, the harness or timing. The first two can be ruled out and that leaves me with timing. Now, I'm 99% sure the timing is correct. So that leaves me to believe that the INA adjuster on the end of the shaft may be bad. Any thoughts on that? Anyone know where to get one or a part number?

Thanks for any help,

Mike B

edit- performing logs today to see what they have to say.

After doing some logs I found that the problem occurs between 1100 - 1900 rpm's. There would be a difference of 20 - 25 degree's when the trouble code would set. The worst one, specified was -1.5 and actual was -52. This only occurs after the engine is at operating temp. This leads me to think that it is indeed the adjuster. Btw, I've already replaced the cam bridge, and the valve in the end of the shaft that is operated by the solenoid.

Thanks for any input,

Mike B

Timing is out most likely...........and or oil PSI volume is insufficient from warn oil pump/improper regulation or sludge/contamination.

Jack, could you explain how oil is regulated on the TSI or how to test it?
Oil regulation is explained in the repair manual and SSP.

I'm going to check the oil pressure tomorrow and see what it's doing. The car has 72k miles on it, do the oil pumps tend to go out early on this engine too? The cam bridge I installed was a Chinese one and I wonder about the quality of the part. The screen fell out of the original one, found it laying on the cut out for the chain where the cover bolts down. I've been toying with the idea that maybe the screen in the new bridge was to restrictive. Possibly? Maybe? Since it only happens at low rpm's? I guess I could recheck the timing and while I'm in there put the old bridge back on to see if anything changes.

Thanks,

Mike B

I remove the screens in all units since 1996..... and with no issue doing so..............while correcting many other issues or prevention of damage.
Seems to be a planned obsolescence part to me.

The fact it happens at low RPM says insufficient volume or PSI regulation/possibly stuck open slight leak.
Could also be plugged sump with sludge.

Key reason I isolate the sumps from turbo lubrication contaminates created........further using a non full synthetic oil blend.

Sorry guys for the late response. Been very busy lately. I did get the car running properly. I went through the timing....again. It was correct. The problem did turn out to be the Chinese made cam bridge. There was a loose ball bearing in the oil tract that fed the intake cam. At idle an idle everything was ok. But when I started to give throttle the ball would restrict the oil flow to much until the engine was around 1900 rpm's. Finished removing the screen (thanks Jack!) from the old cam bridge and reinstalled it. Problem solved! Runs like a champ. At next service I'm pulling the oil pan to make sure the pick up tube screen isn't plugged up.

Awesome, glad you figured it out! What was the reason for changing the cam bridge in the first place?

Regards,
j.
