Un-confirmed rumors are that Northrop Grumman provided the payload separation hardware instead of using SpaceX's provided setup, and the satellite failed to separate from the second stage.

IIRC, they didn't show or confirm payload fairing separation during the webcast (planned secrecy). Remember that this mission was scrubbed back in November to do additional checks on the payload fairing.

In any case, SpaceX says that the Falcon 9 performed nominally, so the problem was most likely with the adapter or payload.

...unless they are faking a mission failure to stop back yard satellite trackers from publishing orbital data for their uber-secret payload?????

Meanwhile, you have the Elon haters with headlines like:
Highly Classified Spy Satellite Is A "Total Loss" After SpaceX Mission Fails.

Calling this a "SpaceX failure" seems premature at best.
The engineering problems are likely insurmountable. It would be like proposing to land a rocket booster section on a barge floating in the middle of the ocean.
