My name is David and me and my father both have VW and he recently decided to get vcds to have a little fun with our cars and to see if their were any problems. I own a 2005 vw MK4 jetta tdi 1.9L and upon hooking up vcds and doing an autoscan, it showed a few faults as shown here.

Their were a few things that caught my eye but the main question I have is what I should do about this camshaft fault code that is shown below.

Me and my father were driving around and looking at the solenoids in the tranny along with many other things and we came across this camshaft fault. We cleared the fault code and it immediately showed back up. What do you guys think?

I think his curiosity (he's my son) is the fact that there in no MIL and the car runs perfect. If I reset the code while he was driving it would come back instantly. Is the car in some sort of "default" mode? From my experience with gassers, when you lose the CPS, the car quits. This is obviously not the case with this car.

On VW/Audi cars, the cam position sensor is typically not essential to the engine running. It helps the ECU get the cam phasing (relative to the crankshaft) sorted out more quickly on start-up, and it may be used to do other cross-checks, but it won't keep an engine from running.

If the fault comes back immediately as you describe, I'd say the ECU is not getting any signal from the sensor.

Good to know. He's also complained lately that it is harder to start than normal. Thanks for the info.

I have found the issue and it was fixed fairly easy. It seems that that camshaft position harness was not cliped in all the way and vibrated loose. After plugging it back and I went back on my laptop to scan it again for that fault and it was gone. Thank you for your assistance.

Thanks for the followup :-)

I told him that the rudest thing that happens in forums is when someone asks for help, finds the problem, and then ignores the thread afterwards and nobody knows if it was ever resolved. Makes searching for answers very difficult. Drives me crazy.
