For the fragility of engines and transmissions, no doubt. Robustness and efficiency are at odds when it comes to designing these. As for the rest of the car, for example @PetrolDave's suspension, much less so. There it's just the complexity that VAG engineers in, because they can.It is the punitive stupid emissions regulations that are to blame
