If I was going to do that, I think I would use an AGM battery. No venting issues or potential spillage to worry about.

Yeah... I was thinking that.

I have to have it in an enclosure anyway, but I'd still vent the box under the car - just in case.

Because it's in the cabin, it has to be sealed, and I'd like to minimise the chances of leakage in an accident :-D

One Shiney... one not so much.

Apparently the new one was made in Spain, October 2015. The old one is German!

I reckon I might store "one" of them in the safe :-) It's quite familiar with car parts

No other single item has cost what the new ECU was... Only the Touran itself, and the A3 donor were more, and they have both provided quite a number of useful parts :D

The new clutch and flywheel for Mrs DubNurds BMW arrived today too... so that will probably take priority  especially if it actually gives up!

Still not much happening. Air cleaner is almost installed - just a couple of bits to arrive:

Installed badges that mimic the original "2.0 FSI" badge layout/style, but are correct  :

4Motion badge is still coming, and I can't fit that yet - It's not yet 4motion ;) Not 100% sure on it's location yet, but I want it to seem like it's factory fitted.

OK, I lied.

I got bored, waiting for stuff, and the 4motion badge arrived:

32883307893_058db75640_z.jpg

I blu-tacked it in a few places, before deciding this was MY choice for most-OEM location :p

It annoys me that the 3.2 badge has the little joining parts in it, though the 2.0 badge was the same, so it's still OEM-esque. Chances are 99% of people won't even see it, and the other 1% will wonder what dumbass decided to change the stickers on a Touran. Those 3 badges cost more than the USED ECU I got, and now ANOTHER used ECU is available really cheap! I considered buying that too - "Dollar-Cost Averaging" :D, but it's gone already anyway.

This car is going to get an exhaust loud enough so that anyone who's behind it will realize it's not a 4-banger right? ;)

It should be audible, at least once the exhaust flap opens

At this stage it's looking to be a mix of R32 exhaust to the rear, then the Touran rear muffler (same as Golf/GTi) with an internal bypass on one pipe, connected to the R32 flapper. It'll have hidden tips.

I suspect it will still sound remarkably like a MK5 R32.

So, I can confirm that fitting the manual trans ECU clears the ABS fault, where the ABS is looking for the missing TCU.

I also performed my first successful IMMO adaptation, matching my used R32 manual ECU to the R32 cluster I already had. When I tried to adapt the used ECU to the Touran Cluster (to gain the correct VIN), I got a "System not OK" error though.

I'd still like to get the Touran VIN into the ECU and cluster, but I'm not sure if it's possible through conventional means... It may require direct reading and fiddling the EEPROMs etc.

Anyway, my latest scan:

No unexpected fault codes now! Current codes are for pre-existing conditons (not caused by me!), or something there is already a solution for

I've also installed the AWD rear subframe and rear suspension - not too far to go now! Lucky, because my Mrs is pretty grumpy about it all now.

Plus, its our only car with a towbar and the boys want dirtbikes :D

Well...That was 2 hours of my life I'll never get back!

Turns out that editing the immo data in the Immo/cluster to get the right VIN is the WRONG way to do it! I had to change it all back, the re-adapt the immo...

But I now have 3 matched remotes, 3 matched transponders and 2 matching blades - just have to get 1 more cut, to have 3 fully working keys!

I think I need a new holesaw :D

I was making the exhaust "safer and more fuel efficient"... by increasing the internal flow rate. For the 3rd hole, I had to use the hammer setting on my drill  It's exhaust grade stainless, so pretty hard to drill!

35022675141_63073fd71d_z.jpg

I'm actually using the Touran rear muffler, and integrating the flapper valve from the R32 muffler, so in "sensible" mode, the car will be fairly quiet and muffled by the rear muffler, using a single 2.25" outlet. When the flapper opens (apparently after certain RPM, and throttle openings) it will be a bit more grunty sounding, but a bit quieter than the original R32.

The holes above are to allow more exhaust into the "quiet" side, but also increase the flow direct to the flapper valve, when it opens.

34343442433_bb473c0f93_z.jpg

^ This is the big hole I still have to fill - one exhaust section and one driveshaft to lengthen 100mm, and a large custom fuel tank  Hopefully about 30% more capacity too.

34988679432_63a4225664_z.jpg

^ This is my battery mount: There are 2 25mm alloy box section across the sides of the plate, and 6 bolts through a double skinned part of the floor. Then 3 stainless hex bar uprights are bolted through the bottom plate, and an alloy bracket bolts onto them, clamping the battery firmly in place. The large (75mm2!) positive cable comes out of the enclosure, through a factory grommet location in the floor, and up the chassis rail, as per the R32 Golf.

It will have a euro DIN battery, with the vent hose routed out of the enclosure, through the floor and vent to atmosphere, as per standard euro trunk or under seat installs. The battery will actually be an AGM, though they still have the hose. I just got one for Mrs DubNurds BMW - usually NZ$252... NZ$145 - a friend owns an auto electrician shop

The seat just clears the top cover of the battery enclosure, and changing the battery will involve removing the seat! I'll leave the required tool in the car for that, though there is a jump start post under the bonnet anyway.

The battery protrudes slightly into the passnger footwell, but not enough to be awkward. Because of the upright seating in the touran, the seats are never all the way back, and I'm big (both directions)!

34988668992_3ca89325b8_z.jpg

^ I'm looking forward to cleaning this lot up!

Excuse the mess... I haven't had the maid in for a while!

I want a battery isolator fitted so I don't need to remove the seat, to get to the battery, just for working on the car etc.

It's fitted to the battery ground, so I don't have the risk of it shorting out and causing a fire (75mm2 cable!) There is a 300A time delay fuse at the battery anyway. The switch is a marine unit, rated at 300A continuous, and 1250A cranking.

After cutting a hole and removing the insulation under the carpet... TaDaaaaa!

Well... after doing nothing for ages... I acheived... very little :D

Driveshaft safety loops: A New Zealand modification Certification requirement for a modified driveshaft, One done (still needs tidying), still a front one to go!

Exhaust frankensteined: Touran rear muffler, cut open, modified inside, flapper valve added and connected up to R32 4motion mid section - Better damn well sound OK, after the work involved!

Turns out I should have worn my safety Jandals (thongs) too...

... it's a LOT deeper than it looks, and the hot bit of stainless tube stuck there when I lifted my foot up

I go barefoot a lot ;)

Looks pretty good NZDubNurd!

Driveshaft safety loops? Too bad that in so many places, Big Brother is implementing so many "creativity-crushing" laws! We don't have all of that in my area ... YET!

Do you know what I've learned about doing projects like this? ... When you begin a project, you've got energy and a fresh NEW vision! But when you're coming down the home stretch ... it's the HARDEST place to get motivated!

Press on to the finish line my friend!

There was a BIG gap in the middle, with little productivity - enthusiam has been renewed though!

Otherwise, I'm driving a '72 Beetle right through summer  ... Though that will probably still happen!
