Skoda Octavia 2012 1.2TSI CBZB, misfiring, running lean

My friend is having some problems with his Skoda. MIL on, jumpy and erratic engine running. Below is first auto-scan after symptoms started.

Fuel pressure sensor G247 malfunction got our attention, so we decided to replace it. After replacement cleared fault codes and went for a short test drive. Seemed to work ok and no fault codes were found after that.

Well that was few weeks ago and today he called that MIL is on again and car is running poorly.

Planning to read codes again when possible (probably friday) but thought I'd ask if anyone has good guesses as to what we should inspect next?

Fuel transfer pump? High pressure fuel pump?

Hi Mika,
A fuel pressure check with a gauge (if you have a suitable one) to cross reference what the sensor G247 is reporting would be sensible. Is the wiring/connector to the G247 good? Was it a genuine G247?

Unfortunately, I do not have a suitable gauge to check pressure sensor. Wiring is to be checked when I get access to car again.

New sensor was a genuine Bosch part.

On test drive, G247 was showing consistent readings at all times, actual rail pressure followed specified pressure nicely. On test drive we did following observations. When starting cold car and pulling off, first minutes were awful. Lots of misfiring, especially in cylinder 1. Over 100 in first kilometer.

Then after few minutes, after reaching normal operating temperatures, engine was running almost normally. Only few misfires now and then. It looked like there were no recorded misfiring when driving normally with warm engine, only under flat out acceleration we got few misfires every time.

Misfiring was not even between cylinders. At all conditions, cylinder 1 had much more misfiring than 2 and 4. And then cylinder 3 had almost no misfiring at all. This seems odd, if there was problems with fuel pressure, it should influence every cylinder?

What I then discovered, was that this car has never seen dealership or even Skoda-specialist workshop. As result, car has original spark plugs... They should have been changed after 60000km or 4 years. Now 75000km and 6 years has passed...

Tomorrow it shall get new plugs and then we continue our investigations... I was wondering, maybe those poor plugs are having hard time igniting rich mixture, which they obviously get after cold start (lots of misfiring) and under flat-out acceleration (some misfiring)?

It's gonna be another week until I can get to the car again. I believe owner is going to take it to dealership to fix, he needs the car quite badly. Just hoping that I eventually hear what was the cause for all this.

Well, owner still didn't go to dealership. Instead, he went to non-VAG garage and they have so far replaced spark plug leads, ignition coil and high pressure fuel pump. No success. :facepalm:

Symptoms are still there, car is running lean and misfiring. Interesting to eventually see, what's the cause for all this... I personally think that engine is getting too much air from some intake leak. But where is that leak... maybe my friend will finally take the car to dealership, I believe they could get it solved.

Time to check lift pump and regulation to HPP or PCV EVAP issue.

Check sump for fuel contamination or even plugged damaged injectors or warn cam lobe for HPP stroke being improper.

This case has been solved at dealership. They changed upstream O2 sensor and now it's working again.

Car seems fixed at the moment, but noted low voltages in some systems, if it raises it's ugly head consider volts/amps = watts, and if low,............ pump cannot operate at factory speeds, meaning low rail pressure.

I thought that high pressure pump that feeds the fuel rail, is mechanical and low electrical power would not effect rail pressure...?

About the update, I think that owner of car has zero interest in it, if the car is working fine. As we have some distance between us, I don't believe he is willing to drive here for just another auto-scan.

HP pump is fed by lift pump, if it is not fed it cannot produce, so not saying electrical is the issue but could be if RPM on lift pump is not up to par.
