Hello members,

I have facelifted 2016 Passat NMS (like b7 US version) with full led headlamps ant tail lamps. Passat came from US, and will be ridden in Europe now, so I had to change some lightening features, to work like Eu cars do. It has PQ35 H++ BCM and Problem is that i messed up byte 18.

My question is: Does anyone have stock values for byte 18 for passat like this one?

And could it be coded for parking ligts to dim from drl, when light switch is on parking light position?

p.s recoded bcm with vag can pro, to get tail lights to work the way I wanted.

Thanks in advance!

Maybe anyone has definitions of 18 byte? I saw somewhere there was a 18byte.pdf, but link is no longer working.

What's the point of autoscan if byte 18 in PQ35 is masked with 00?

So we can see how the car is equipped, because that will affect the correct value in byte 18.

Do not touch Byte 18 if it has Hex 00 in it. You cannot go back to the original with VCDS!
This statement is for all other people who read this as you already fixed it with the other tool.

I don't think that's entirely correct. I think you can go back to the original; the problem is that you have to know what it is, and in many cases, the original value is not known, because it is masked with '00' in the factory configuration.

Based on my humble experience, if there was any valid hexadecimal preset that would fit to your car, it would be there.
Why should VAG use Hex 00 as factory default if there was any other preset that acts as exactly the same?

I'm not aware of any case where Hex 00 could be replaced with any other non-zero value.

My understanding was that '00' hides/masks the real value..?

0x00 tells the BCM to use the configuration stored in the EEPROM, while other values are loaded by other codings. This means changing a previously stored coding of 00 to 76 and then back to 00 means that the configuration stored behind entry 76 is now masked under 00.

I am pretty sure the reason why VAG chooses to do this masking is because the other parameter entries might change between updates. So in one software version 76 could mean Passat with Xenon and LED tail lights while it could mean Skoda Octavia with basic light package in the other.

To prevent issues that would occur upon updating those modules the actual values are stored in the EEPROM and then masked under 00.

However this does not explain why sometimes values other than 00 can be found as it completely annihilates this „feature“...

This explanation seems also legit.
My understanding of Byte 18 is the following:

Imagine the EEPROM reserves 4 Bits for your whole lighting configuration (just for illustration).

0000 --> Hex 01 (Golf MK7, Xenon RoW)
0001 --> Hex 02 (Golf MK7, Halogen RoW)
0010 --> Hex 03 (Golf MK7, Halogen NAR)
0011 --> Hex 04 (...)
0100 --> Hex 05 (...)
0101 --> Hex 06
0110 --> Hex 07
0111 --> Hex 08
1000 --> Hex 09
1001 --> not existent as Hex value
1010 --> Hex 0A
1011 --> Hex 0B
1100 --> Hex 0C
1101 --> Hex 0D
1111 --> Hex 0E

Each lighting configuration is stored in some buffer that can be adressed with the Hex values mentioned above (Byte 18 values) and so re-written to EEPROM to take effect when they are coded via VCDS.

But then you have that special car. With that special lighting. VW up! Walter Röhrl Edition.
VAG has no Hex preset for that special lighting pinout (1001) so no predefined hex value does fit.

The result is 1001 hardcoded in your EEPROM and Byte 18 to 0x00.

Changing to non-0x00 will result in the deadlock where you cannot go back to 1001 because there is no preset for this.

This is my understanding of the whole thing.

I can confirm from first hand that on some cars, you can go back to factory settings with VCDS, though you need to know the factory value hidden behind 00.
If you do not have it, alternative tool must be used.

I also agree with hadez16 that it is best not to touch Byte 18, if you are not 100% sure what you are doing.

If I test from 00 to FF even I don't find original configuration //////////??????????/:confused:

As I said.
Can be fixed via EEPROM modification.
