You have a false air leak or bad MAF causing vicarious misfire.

Yeah while intake off inspecting gaskets and hoses might as well change the T-stat ............agreed.

Thanks guys. I tried disconnecting the MAF and the engine ran much better. Is it possible that cleaning will correct this, or should I just buy a new one?

Jack, in the interest of learning??, have noted some VW when MAf is disconnected will default to a matrix and run quite well, pointing to a MAF issues, and have not tested enough but some cars will not run at all, is this consistent on VW or just some models.?

I hate and love shortcuts .......this is one I happen to hate!

Depends on programming default tables in respective ECU and unplugging a MAF is not a good test at all!

A better test is clearing faults and re-coding the module to baseline/adptions.

Then putting in basic settings to force a baseline at idle to observe a default operation and or watching trims while inducing a non flammable or flammable gas in blocks.

Just no substitute nor can nefarious tuning hide from mechanical tests & is why basic mechanical tests must be carried out with proficiency, with aid of tools such as electronic qualifying with DVOM compression checks and fuel PSI or volume & must be done to isolate and cross check data that just can not be trusted.
