Swapping Radios and Security Codes - Does the vehicle remember all security codes?

Hello all,

I just bought a used RNS510 to replace my (originally installed OEM) RNS315 (I want the bigger screen). I know I will be prompted to enter in the security code for the new radio (which I have). I want to install it to make sure it works (limited time to return it if defective), but I also need some other parts (9w7 and harness) to complete the installation which are on the way and won't get here until next week. I am just going to plug in the 510, test the radio, CD and NAV, then reinstall the RNS315.

The question is: will the car 'remember' that the RNS315 was the original radio that came with the car OR is it going to ask me for the security code (which I do not have)?

It works the other way round - the RNS315 SHOULD remember the VIN of the vehicle it was originally fitted to, and if the CAN bus messages match the remembered VIN then the RNS315 won't ask for the PIN code.

Ahhh. OK. Radio knows vehicle, not vehicle knows radio. Makes sense. Thanks. Going to do a quick swap this weekend then swap back.

actually its not gonna remember, because it's not that just radio remembers car (VIN number) but also cluster remembers serial and or pin code, so once you put new device and enter pin code, and return old radio it will ask for pin code even if that is device from factory fitted to that car

OK. Well, I will find out soon. I did just install the RNS510 and entered its code. It came up as a Fender Audio system and I had no audio. I used the MicroCAN and looked at module 37. A whole bunch of new stuff is there. Found in BYTE 1 it showed this (07 Fender Audio). Changed it first to 06 (VW Audio BAP/DSP) but that did not work after reset (<> *). Then tried 01 VW Sound System and reset it again. Got audio! Also nav is working and showing in DIC.

But now I have a problem with the backup camera. I installed an OEM version (true RGB, not composite video going through a converter) and it worked fine on the RNS315. Now alll I get is messy reddish waves - nothing even close to an image. This OEM camera (3WO 807 210B) is supposed to work on all of the RNS/RCD heads. Maybe something else has to be changed in one of the modules? I am hoping that is the case and not that it is a defect in the RNS510.

If anyone has some suggestions that would be great.

If I can get this last item to work, I know the head is good - everything else works fine, and I will put the RNS315 back in until the BT parts come.

Hmm, the only Camera related thing I see in this RNS is Byte 3, bit 6, which you already have ticked (which strikes me as correct).

But I guess I'd try un-ticking it to see what happens.

Hmm, the only Camera related thing I see in this RNS is Byte 3, bit 6, which you already have ticked (which strikes me as correct).

But I guess I'd try un-ticking it to see what happens.

OK. Thanks for looking. I was wondering about BYTE 9. There are over a dozen "Optical Park System" options, and of course none are for an EOS. I did try 05 Golf but still no good. Will uncheck the box and try it after I double check the connector (as someone else suggested)

UPDATE: I could find nothing wrong with the connector or connection. Going to reinstall the RNS315 and see if the backup camera still works...

So I went through each and every BIT for BYTE 9, rebooting the radio after each change/closing of the module, followed by turning the car off and back on. None of the 20 Optical Park Systems made any difference.

Here is all I see:

I swapped OE radios several times on my 8E A4 and never had that problem?

Because of the problem with the rear view camera, I unplugged everything to look at the camera harness and back of the radio. I stopped for dinner then put the 510 back in. It asked for the security code again! So loss of power seems to have tripped mine even though it went back into the same car.
