Apologies if this is a duplicate, I searched and couldn't find any hits.

How can I use VCDS (on my mk6 GTI, 2014) to turn off the beep that occurs when the car senses the temperature hits 39 degrees? Or alternatively, a way to lower the temperature at which it triggers? I've explored the various VCDS menus/options but can't find where this set.

Thanks in advance!

I don't see an obvious way.

If anyone knows how, please chime in!

^^^ AIB Wolfgang: Those are only present in MQB cars onward. So the MK6 does not have it, at least to my knowledge.

I'm trying to change the 39degree ice warning to a lower temp range (eg, 0 degrees, so it never goes off).
I tried this a few days ago, using this sequence of VCDS steps:
17 instruments
16 security code 20103
10 adaptations

but got the error:
"Controller refused the key!
Error 35: invalid key"

After more google kung fu, I came across threads suggesting trying 47115 and 25327 as the key.
When I tried these new keys, both gave the error:
"Security Access Error
Controller refused to send a seed!
Error 37: Required time delay not expired"

Is this error a consequence of my earlier (failed) attempts to enter a valid security code?
I've driven the car about 50 miles since the last time I tried a security code -- how far does the car need to be driven to reach the time delay expiration so I can try again?

Thanks in advance.

I've driven the car about 50 miles since the last time I tried a security code -- how far does the car need to be driven to reach the time delay expiration so I can try again?
That's not a function of distance but rather how long the iginition has been on. Check this measuring value:

IDE00323 -- Security Access: Number of invalid keys

If it is not zero, wait until it is.

However, I still don't see a way to turn the "freeze" warning off in that cluster.

Bummer. I was hoping the "freeze" parms would appear after the security key was accepted. My car is one of the very last of the mk6 GTI's (2014) and I've seen this tweak (39 degree) in discussions of 2011 mk6's, so it seems odd that that functionality wouldn't have carried forward into 2014 builds.

How long as in minutes, not miles? Does it erase the memory of one invalid key for every N minutes the ignition has been on? If so, then I really hate VAG's security overkill.

I do not think there is a definitive answer to this; I believe it varies by control module and how many times an invalid key has been entered. In some control modules, the number of minutes Security Access remains locked out doubles with every new attempt to enter an invalid key.

@TedJohnson: Hi. Given the apparent futility in seeking a coding solution to your problem (as evident in the informed responses received thus far) - maybe you could try an "inelegant" fix - which will have other consequences, but depending on your level of frustration might be acceptable.

I don't have a specific WD for your "Yankee" car, but the temperature sensor is generally what's more commonly known in electronic parlance as a "thermistor" - which simply means a temperature dependent resistor. So, the way that thermistors work is that their ohms increase as the temperature decreases (it's called a "negative temperature coefficient", or NTC).

When used in a car application, a threshold resistance is established so that whenever the resistance is above a set value, the ice warning is triggered (there are actually 2 x threshold temps established to stop the alarm from "hunting" - but this is probably too much information!)

So, an alternative solution to your problem is to swap the thermistor for a fixed value resistor that has an ohmic value less than the pre-set threashold. Now, of course this will have the consequential effect of the instrument cluster always displaying a fixed temperature - but it's only a question of deciding if the cure is less annoying than the problem!!

This particular fix has the additional disadvantage that it will require some experimentation to determine the correct resistance value - but again, its a matter of deciding if the effort is commensurate with the annoyance factor!!

The choice is entirely yours!!

@Uwe: thanks for the info!
@DV52: thanks for the thermistor suggestion. I actually do like to see the temperature reading, so I won't do the thermistor change. The temp in my area often changes a surprising amount as I drive around town into the various microclimates, which is interesting. However having said that... the other day it was at 39 for the entire drive, so I was bracing myself for the ice warning "Ding!", and it never occurred.

The temp in my area often changes a surprising amount as I drive around town into the various microclimates, which is interesting.

The existence of what you call "microclimates" is exactly the reason why 2 x threshold temperatures are established in the ice warning function.

If you think about what can happen when the ambient temperature is EXACTLY 39 degrees - as you drive within a "microclimate" where the temperature varies by only a small amount, you will conclude that the dreaded "ding" will constantly sound as you move through the area.

To stop this, a second threshold temperature is established that is slightly warmer than 39 degrees (lets say, 40 degrees). So, once the ice facility measures 39 degrees, the "ding" happens and the ice function remains armed until the temperature increases to 40 degrees - at which point the ice function re-sets. This means that having armed, the ice facility does nothing between 39 and 40 degrees (it's called a "dead-band", or in engineering speak "hysteresis").

Hence the dreaded "ding" only happens in the initial arming phase and hence (probably) the ice temperature is 39 degrees - instead of the nice round number 40 degrees (but, I'm guessing about the second bit)!!

However having said that... the other day it was at 39 for the entire drive, so I was bracing myself for the ice warning "Ding!", and it never occurred.

Please don't take offense (because none is intended) - but one of the abiding mysteries that I have never understood is the faith that folk have in believing the number shown on displays!! It appears to be universal regardless of hemisphere, culture or background. I've had a long association with meters and instrument laboratories and I can confirm that displays (digital. or otherwise) often "tell porkies".

Now, I've yet to be conclude whether these "porkies" are deliberate lies, or involuntary untruths (my decision is pending further discussions with my therapist about a range of conspiracy theories :D) - but I suggest that you remain skeptical about the measured value on ALL displays!!

Hah! I don't think VW themselves have much faith in it; if they did they'd set it closer to 32°F. ;)

@Uwe: you certainly do ask the big questions!!! Why is the "ding" at a respectable 39°F (4°C)? I didn't know - until I discovered the following answer from a VW dealership in your part of the globe:
"Though our instincts suggest 39 degrees is much too warm for a safety feature to be necessary, this is actually an important safety feature in your Volkswagen. It’s not always true that ice only forms at 32 degrees, as the asphalt and ground temperature could be much colder than the outside temperature. This means rainfall can quickly turn into ice on the roads surfaces................"
Here in Glendale, California, this isn’t likely to happen, but if you’re fond of road trims or have family you plan on visiting in the Midwest, it might serve as a good reminder to be cautious of changing weather conditions.
From HERE

Don

PS: But an even more unfathomable question is how anyone with even a hint of spacial perception can call the States in red (below), the Midwest. On this basis, Ross-Tech should change its address to 881 Sumneytown Pike Lansdale PA (Farwest) ;)

BMW stated in the E30 owners manual (Dads was a 1991) that is was at 4C because ice can form on bridges and other areas at that temperature.

The bridges can cool more easily because of the missing thermal mass of the earth under them and can be exposed to the wind chill, pulling their surface temperatures down.

You have to remember that at one point, those states were far-western territories rather than states.
