Hey all, first post here. Always creeping around here and always find what I need. Sadly this project is a little bit less cut and dry. Let me begin by saying I am not a professional by any means, I do alot of side work for people and this is a job I probably should have advised against. A guy brought me a blown up 2000 s4 and requested that we maintain his tip transmission, while swapping the engine with a freshly rebuilt awm 1.8 from a 2001 a4. Car starts and drives, the big issue here is that the AWM ecu wont talk to the s4 tcu. I can communicate with the transmission and all modules all day long, throw no codes in the transmission. The second the car starts up she goes into limp mode and states no communication with ecu. After I drove it down the road and back it also showed a speed sensor code and ecu/tcu incompatible. The other issues are worked out in this scan but the ones Im referring to are out of my element. Ive been trying to access the transmission data from each ecu to see if I can either just straight flash over the old files or adjust the torque/gear ratio values in the current ecu to match up with what the tcu wants to see. This is way out of my element, the local tuner wont mess with vdubs. I need advice from someone that has taken a shot in the dark at a similar deal. Not many people maintain their autos when doing this much work but guy insisted on this over a manual swap. Hoping this can be done with flashing and no more physical labor as car is mechanically set.

ME7 ECUs (or more specifically the software in them) are generally not interchangeable between manual trans and auto trans applications. That ECU (4B0 906 018 CH) looks to be a manual trans ECU.

Then there's the added complication that the software in the TCU expects a 2.7T engine.. "AG5 01V 2.7l5VT USA" and I'm not sure how happy it will be with anything else.

What Uwe stated, the stall speed of the TQ converter is different too and it's tampering!

I very much appreciate the understanding and not flaming me for lack of knowledge. In essence I either must swap in the proper 1.8 auto trans, ecu, and tcu, or go manual? Would it be worth sourcing an auto ecu to try? or is it essentially just prolonging the agony at that point. I definitely had a large lapse in judgement on this whole deal. Just want to get the car driving the easiest way possible at this point, without swapping half the driveline and pedals on my dime with my parts. Good thing I love a good learning experience:rolleyes:
If only my youthful confidence came with a bit of old man wisdom.

Not a qualified repair.

ME7.1 came in the 2.7T S4 and the 1.8T used ME7.5

This is very bad FOD!

I'm reasonably confident the ECU could have auto software put in it, but... I rather doubt that's enough to make the TCU happy. Of course, you could also a matching 1.8T TCU, but then you run into the question of mechanical differences in the transmission; Jack already mentioned a different torque converter stall speed.

Some AWM Audi ECU's for 1.8T of this time frame, support an alternate coding table for selection of the transmission type and other powertrain components.

Thank you two for the conversation, it is all very interesting. Yes, I do realize it was not a professional deal. It was for a more so friend and we were toying with things, I have ordered a rebuild kit for a trans he has and will manual swap the car it looks like. I had known of the software update and the hard wiring differences, I was a fool to think we could make the trans work with a different motor. I do understand that through and through as well. I am always learning, I would not have taken on a job like this for anyone else, i can confidently say that. At least with taking a random shot in the dark at anything, much less something as large as the one thing that transfers power to the wheels. that is interesting about the possible alternate coding, although Im sure that would only extend so far. Using an s4 transmission seems beyond the realm. To access the "alternate coding table" would I have to be using the bench flashing setup and try to dig somewhere im not so comfortable, or is that something that is all accessible and editable with vcds? Again this is strictly for me to learn at this point, car is going manual. and again, not a standard rate customer off the street. Just a decent acquaintance that has a blown s4 and a rebuilt awm engine, figured I would try it in the background and ended up being a lesson learned.
I really appreciate all the information and Im here to soak up as much more as possible. Thank you guys.

This S4 transmission probably just isn't going to play nice but I agree with Jack. Unlike the Golf/Jetta/Beetle (transverse driveline cars) some of the ECMs in Passat and A4 models will support coding for both transmission types and even FWD/AWD in some cases. When using VCDS on a PC you will see a pop-up balloon with all of the various options. This is an example from an older TDI:

In cases where modified coding is rejected - that's where you need high powered tools or a tuner to step in and tweak things that are not possible with VCDS or the factory level scan tool.
