A6 Oem towbar install.

Hi all, new to the forum though I've had an interface for a few years and used it for personal / family use only. I've used it for diagnostics but never for recoding. I'm about to embark on an install of an Oem swivelling towbar on my 2015 A6 bitdi. I bought a used bar, a wibutec harness, the release lever bits and - wait for it, a Westfalen kit. Reason for this is that I can buy a Westfalen kit which includes the interface and a harness for cheaper than an Oem interface but the added bonus is I can use the can bus connectors from that kit rather than splice the Wibutec wires onto the convenience module wires. Didn't want to give Audi any excuses to void my warranty...

So that's my hardware. I have printed off a full system scan of someone who has successfully done this retrofit, but I lack experience in actually making the code changes.

If anyone would be willing to do a step by step guide for me I appreciate it.

I see the most common issue is getting the release indicator working. Well I've plugged the harnesses together and checked the wiring completely with reference to Elsawin and all. Good. Fingers crossed.

No really, I have a hard copy of the scan and it is clear. That said, at some point it did show a problem and Audi changed the mobile phone aerial on the roof (allegedly) after which they said the fault was clear. I scan it and it's still there so I get them to scan it again and it shows clear. They won't accept vcds scan as evidence to look any further into it. I've sort of grown to accept it now but it frustrates me. Particularly so when the fault never existed before they had the car in to fix a stop start fault and since that the mobile phone antenna issue has existed. To be fair if the scan hadn't picked it up I would never have suspected an issue. Everything appears to work. Thing is with aerial type issues the quality of signal is so dependant on other things so it's hard to know if it could be any better than it is or not. It's not as clear cut an argument as a light bulb not working so hard to argue.

I bet you could make it go away long enough to get a clean scan too. Clear the code, then immediately do a scan.

FWIW, it's really rare to see a modern car that's completely free of spurious fault codes. I've learned not to let them make me crazy if everything in the car is working as it should.

As for your tow-bar install, Niels (or Danish distributor) is really good with those codings on these cars. I suspect he'll be along at some point.

Yes that thought had crossed my mind, though clearing it with VCDS and scanning that module immediately brings the fault right back. VCDS even finds it in non aggressive mode so I don't know what to think. I've noticed in a few scans that have been posted a number of faults and given the choice Id rather have mine than some of the others I've seen! There's soooo much to go wrong these days.

BTW I noticed that autocorrect changed the name of my wiring kit from Westfalia to Westfalen but I'm sure those that have looked at towing will have known that.

At the top of this page: Thread Tools -> Subscribe to this thread. Then you should also check your Settings -> General Settings, in the 'Messaging & Notification' section, 'Default Thread Subscription Mode' probably needs to be set to one of the e-mail options. I'm not 100% certain about that since I don't use the e-mail feature myself; I just read everything that's posted here the old-fashioned way.

When the dealer hands you an ODIS print out with all the right date and module data (and yes I made sure they didn't scan another vehicle instead!) It's really hard to argue with them. They even inferred that it may have been VCDS that was causing the fault at one point so that's the mentality we are up against. Like I said I'm going to park that one before I shorten my life expectancy over it.

Yeah I may have been posting from a phone. Too many options these days and I cannot remember but it makes sense.

Thanks for that. I laid the original out below each of your lines so I could see the difference. It makes it much easier for me to see. Being the curious sort that I am, could I ask a question? What do each of these changes make to each module?

My guess:

Module 01 - it's engine cooling boost and maybe torque reduction if trailer snake occurs?
Module 03 - prevent hill hold assist engaging when trailer attached and possible ARS improvements for trailer towing?
Module 09 - No Idea! - maybe bring up the hitch indicator on the instruments and MMI?
Module 46 - Turn off rear parking sensors?
Module 6D - Disable rear fog lights and possibly reversing lights?

Am I anywhere close?

Also, is there any coding to be done to the trailer module itself? It's fresh from Westfalia (though it has Hella Marking so is the same thing!) but I don't know if they come "blank" or with pre-coding based upon the application they were bought for?

Ok so I have done the lions share of the work.

All coding done except I was not able to do the ABS module as the secure code S11820 was not accepted. Is there something I missed or is this code not valid for my region or...?

Other than that, everything seems to work with the exception. The status LED on the release lever. It doesn't work which is a problem encountered by a few others on the forums. This is not a great big issue for me but It would nice nice to work that out at some point. First things first though, that ABS access code.

Any suggestions?

Sure I'm in no great rush.

Something else though. After sending my post earlier I hooked up VCDS to see if all was well. Couple of questions.

When I first scanned I had a few codes including something for Instruments that said incorrect coding. I reset all DTC's and rescanned. Below is my output. For some reason address Instruments now reports "cannot be reached code 0100" at the start of the dump but further down it says no fault codes found?

I've also gained a new fault for GPS Antenna short to ground. Now then, during the debacle that there was around my telephone antenna (See the start of my thread) Audi said to me at one point that it was a wonder my GPS was working and that was why they decided to change my roof aerial. Not for the phone per the vcds message, but because of the GPS! I thought yes - whatever as long as the roof antenna gets changed but guess what, now VCDS is reporting an issue with that too. I really hope I haven't disturbed something to have caused this. I have no idea of the routing of the GPS antenna wiring and I have no idea yet if the NAV system is working or not as I've not left the house. If it's faulty then I gotta go back to Audi with a now modified motor and ask them to sort it out. That's going to be fun!

I'm erring toward thinking that the reason the LED doesn't work on the release lever is related to the trailer module coding but where you start with that I have no idea. Does anyone know if the switch on the swivel bar is meant to indicate on the instruments whether the bar is/is not locked in place, or is that switch only there for the benefit of the LED's on the release handle?

I saw something similar with the infotainment module (5F) in another car recently. I think it was because turned on the ignition only a second or so before clicking [Start] on the Auto-Scan screen, meaning the module hadn't finished booting up and reporting its status to the Gateway. Is it possible your results are due to a similar scenario?

Not sure which error are you relating this comment to but as I said the first scan had some message relating to coding of the instruments module so I cleared all DTC's are rescanned. Everything would have finished booting by then...

Everything was up and running for >10 minutess before the second scan which is posted above.

What's the difference between the first bit that shows comms failure with instruments and the bit below that shows no faults?

The coding of my trailer module is there to so might be good to compare with coding of a module coded by Audi if anyone has one..
