What are the tell-tail indicators that a 2.5 has the dreaded timing chain issues? I just don't want to change an engine if it's possibly something else.

Just purchased a 2005 Jetta 2.5 with 172,000 miles for cheap. It won't idle smooth, and there seems to be a lot of engine noise. When I got the car there were all kinds of codes, because the car sat for 9 months and the battery went dead. I cleared the codes and then restarted the car and re-scanned ... multiple misfires and P2279 again ... (the PCV has been replaced).

Here's the initial scan (engine running) ...

There's nothing that obviously screams timing chains to me.

What do the fuel trims look like?
How about the spark plugs?

Previous owner said he replaced all the coils and plugs, the PCV has been replaced with a Dorman unit, he replaced all three O2 sensors, then gave up.

I haven't actually looked at the plugs ... might do that today and check compression while I have them out. I can check fuel trims also and connect a vacuum gauge to see where it's running at ... erratic valve timing should show up if it's a timing chain issue.

Disconnect camshaft adjuster ( timing solenoid) , if car runs better you have problem with chain. It is located close to transmission side on top of the head.
2005-2006 2.5L engine had bulletining about it, chain gets stretch and looses correct timing.

This says possible bad chain or even a G28 at first glance but more likely related to a faulty "CAT" due to misfires from air leak when the PCV failed & further allowing unwanted oil remediation into the combustion process.

It might be too late.

Today, as I was trying to start the car, I heard this metallic noise, then ... it sounded like I was just turning over a short block with no head! The car never started! I'm going to pull the upper chain cover and have a look ... the engine may be a goner!

There's a local VW repair shop (where I bought the Jetta 2010 VW 2.5 engine for my Passetta). He buys wrecked late-model VW's, predominately Jetta's. I can get a long block (no accessories) from a 2011 Jetta 2.5 with about 25,000 miles ... for $50! I looked at it today.

A lot cheaper than replacing the timing chain .... and NOW I'd probably have to replace the head (possible bent valves).

We'll see what the timing chain inspection turns up.

ivagp, no chance! I'm saving this cheap source of VW 2.5's for myself ... it's top secret!

Jack, I pulled the plugs today and checked compression ... I started on #5 ... NOTHING. I didn't go any further.

I picked up a 2009 Jetta 2.5 engine today for $50 ... it's missing the intake, throttle body, alternator, AC compressor, oil filter housing, fuel rail, dip stick tube, air injection pump, and coils ... but I'll just switch that all over from the old engine. I assume that's why these engines are cheap ... all the parts that are missing. But they ARE verified good running low mileage engines from totaled VW's. It looks fairly clean.

I did one final scan on the Jetta before I started tearing things apart ... as expected (if the timing chain broke), I got a Camshaft Position Sensor code ... the misfire codes were there previously ...

Well, I've got the engine and transmission installed ... still have to connect everything up and put the front end back on ... probably Friday. Took me a little longer than expected ... I had to replace the passenger's side front coil spring (broken), and have the front rotors turned since the car sat for almost a year.

But I ran in to a slight problem today. I noticed that the 2009 2.5L engine doesn't have the Secondary Air Pump! The port on the passenger's side of the head isn't even drilled, and the port on the driver's side has a block-off plate over it. I simply removed the block-off plate on the head, installed the Solenoid Air Valve from the 2005 engine, and cut the tube off going to the passenger's side port ... then blocked the port off on the Solenoid Valve.

Hopefully it won't throw a code since it's only feeding air to one side of the head.

I didn't know the newer 2.5's didn't have Secondary Air Pumps.

Not in a million years!

Although, the last time I was at Pull-a-Part in Cleveland a couple weeks ago, they had a 2007 Passat with a 2.0t FSI that had been wrecked in the front, although it hadn't been hit hard. I got to it about a day after it had been put on the yard. I pulled the HPFP and checked the cam and follower ... it looked GOOD! Apparently, it was there because it was totaled, not because of engine problems.

I was going to pull the complete engine and buy it ... but I didn't have the time, nor enough money on me. Pull-a-Part charges about $250 for ANY 4-cyl. engine ... whether it's a Ferrari or a Fiesta! I could have sold the parts for 5 times that amount!

I DID get the HPFP and I already sold it on eBay.

I'm sure the engine is long gone by now (Cleveland is about an hour away from me).

OK, I got the car back together and running ... everything seems to work pretty good. I had to drill out the 4 exhaust bolts that seem to ALWAYS break off on VW's (why can't they just use a doughnut like everybody else?). It hasn't thrown a code for the Secondary Air Pump either (yet).

The only problem is (I know, seems like with VW's there's ALWAYS a problem!) ... occasionally, the red oil pressure symbol comes on with this incessant dinging ... but after a few miles, the dinging stops and you're just left with a red oil light. Not when you first start the engine, but after you start driving. Checked the oil, it's good ... the engine is very quiet, no valve clatter or metallic noises ... even after I drove it for several miles (I've parked it until I can figure out the problem). So the low mileage is believable. I'm getting no code for the Camshaft Adjustment Valve, which I've heard will throw a code if oil pressure is too low.

Since this 2009 Jetta engine didn't have an oil filter/cooler housing ... I took the one off the 2005 2.5L engine. Then I changed the oil and the filter to 5W-30 synthetic (STP filter).

After some web searching, one guy said he had the problem because he had used an older outdated Bosch filter (?) ... he changed the filter and the problem went away. Others said that it was the oil pressure switch that was bad (I'm hoping that's my problem).

Tomorrow, I'm going to try to connect a mechanical oil pressure gauge to see where the pressure is actually at. What is normal oil pressure for a 2.5L?

Any other ideas ... anybody else run into this?

Good. That's the proper way to trouble-shoot this.

What is normal oil pressure for a 2.5L?
That will depend on engine speed, oil temperature, and oil type. Just about all of my older VWs (Mk.1 to Mk.3) had aftermarket (VDO) oil pressure gauges in them like this:

gauges.jpg

The difference between cold and hot was easily 2:1, both at idle and at higher engine speeds. So there's no single right answer. What I'd do is hook the gauge up to a cold engine, start it up, take a reading at idle and at 2500 or 3000 rpm. Let it get good and hot (drive it if possible) and then take two more readings: One at idle and one at 3000 or 3500. I'm curious what you see.

Meanwhile, if someone does have some kind of real specs handy, feel free to post 'em.

No more dingy dingy!

It's OK ... when I removed the oil pressure switch to connect a mechanical gauge, I found it had one bent pin! Straightened the pin, reassembled ... and everything is good! No more dingy dingy oil light!

Put about 75 miles on it today ... everything seems to work good!
