I have an issue with my 2002 1.8 B 6 A 4 the other day wile driving the engine had sudden loss of power. When it happened I thought the engine had stalled but it was still running when I pulled over, although not very good. I looked at the instrument cluster and the check engine light was on as well as the epc light. I was only a mile or so from and I was able to limp home. I checked the fault codes and had several throttle body codes I so cleaned the throttle body and attempted to perform a throttle body adaption. The adaption failed and the box all the way to to right had the word error in the box. The engine has no power and is misfiring as well any help would be appreciated.

It's a but puzzling that there are no fault codes after a failed TBA.

Is the ECU stock or tuned?

Its a stock ecu. The first time that I ran the auto scan I didn't have the ignition on and it only showed 3 controllers could that have something to do with it. What I'm confused about is the misfires is this something that can be related to the throttle body.

STOP........ !

ECU could be smoked........

Please disassemble ECU to inspect board for visual and even if not seen damage, could be a result of the OXS/02 sensor heaters in short.

Please unplug both OXS sensors, then do a TVA with VCDS.

If the EPC pots are dead let me know if we can help with a set of OXS sensors and or ECU as a package deal.

Check fuses.......

Misfires can indeed be related, as could faulty grounds at coil packs or bad MAF!

I went back ran the car for a couple of minutes and tried to do the throttle body adaption then ran the auto scan again. I went to 060 group the first box was 19.1 the second was 80.5 the third 0 the forth error. Clicked on the on/off button nothing happened.

Thanks Jack I will check all of the things that you suggest starting with the electrical and fuses then work my way to the ecu thanks again

I noticed that the battery voltage was getting below 12 volts I will charge it and look at the items that Jack suggested.

I put a battery charger to bring the battery voltage back up to 12.5 volts and disconnected the o2 sensors. When I try to run the TBA it still doesn't do anything when I click on the on/off button other than change to on. The engine starts and runs but not very well. When the accelerator is depressed to increase the rpms to 1500 it oscillates between 1500 and 2500 rpm with steady pedal pressure. The engine runs like crap at idle so bad that it seems like it might stall but doesn't. I went to the measuring blocks and ran the misfire counter cylinder #1 had 8, #2 14, #3 0, and #4 2 misfires so it is misfiring I think mainly idle or at least that seems to be the case. I've checked the fuses and the coil pack ground and find nothing wrong. A few years ago I had a B 5 that the battery went dead while sitting over the winter and it ran like this until the TBA was done. I have a couple of questions about Jacks recommendations? What does the fact that I can't run the TBA with the o2 sensors disconnected tell me about my O2 sensors or my inability to run the TBA. I don't know what you mean by EPC pots being dead? I'm gong to wait for some input before removing the ECU.

Sure.........

The ME7 series ecu's share stupidity architecture for build internally & on the ECU board when the OXS heater short, they wipe the section of the board which controls the EPC too.

The consumers all run through a bus of shared power supply at a higher AMP level fuse than the board can be protected at, further are the last place the OXS heaters are on that bus & which get their ground completed through the ECU controller.

You could indeed have a bad EPC or wiring to it so it would be a good idea to check this too but it's much more rare than the OXS heater issue.

Any thoughts on why I'm not able to perform the TBA. I'm going to start looking at wiring diagrams in the mean time.

A bad TV or wiring + blown fuse or a shorted component running interference and or bad ECU as a result.

No magic answer..........start testing...

I think that I have figured out why I can't perform the TBA I cleared fault codes prior to running the adaptation and cycled the ignition. The problem is I didn't check to see if the codes were cleared, unfortunately three of the throttle body codes come right back. So when I try to run the TBA there are fault codes stored in the ECU. Could this be the reason that I can't run the TBA. The next question is how do I clear these codes so they don't come back. I haven't started the engine but they come back or does cycling the ignition reset them.

If there's an underlying problem with the throttle body (or the wiring, or the ECU) that causes this code to come back consistently:

Code:
17953 - Throttle Valve Controller
            P1545 - 001 - Malfunction - MIL ON
Then you're going to have to fix whatever is causing that before you will be able to do a TBA.

In order to clear codes in some cases if the adaption isn't completed or problem corrected first..........otherwise you can't clear until so.

You may indeed need an ecu........

Do me a favor.

Take TV off and I want you to lube it up real good with WD40 and then I want you to massage it in a reverse direction at idle seat backward at least 5mm and keep doing this.

or

Take butter fly plate carefully off by removing screws and see if adapts and if it does polish everything clean and lube further.

Have you authenticated wiring and ability to carry current?

Have you verified all consumers and fuses?

These are the three fault codes that are stored that won't clear, 3 Faults Found:17967 - Throttle Body (J338) P1559 - 008 - Fault in basic settings,
17987 - Throttle Actuator (J338) P1579 - 001 - Adaptation Not Started, 17953 - Throttle Valve Controller P1545 - 001 - Malfunction - MIL ON as well as the EPC light on. I have taken the TV off and cleaned it I will remove it and do as you have suggested. I have looked at the wiring diagram in my Bentley manual I'm beginning to understand the wiring I think. When you say authenticate the wiring do I take voltage readings at the TV plug. I think that I have verified the fuses are good. Could you stop saying it might be the ECU I don't want that. I'd much rather it be wiring or something equally cheap to repair. I will follow your suggestions in the morning. Thank you very much for your patience and help.

There are 6 wires from the ECU to the TV ............load test the wires with a load light by isolating the TV and ECU from the tracks.

Yup

Take a headlight bulb and make a test light of at least 55 watts.

Then from end to end using the current tracks in a series circuit from the battery through a multi meter & set to AMPS, then through the test light and current track back to battery and see how brilliant the light is while observing AMP draw on meter.

If you don't understand the above........... I suggest you go see a professional that does or watch some YouTube videos and RTFB until you do.
