    Leak in Air Intake with Lean at Idle and EVAP

    Hello guys,

    first of all - thanks for such robust and quality product. Sleek design and speedy workflow on Hex V2 is simply amazing.

    On the other hand, I have a lasting problem with my car and hopefully, we could find an area for discussion. Started with EVAP problem, and now finishing with air intake, lean system and EVAP is back again.

    Recent repairs

    Well, it all started somewhat back in April. EVAP P0441 incorrrect flow appeared. All parts were changed into new OEM, except Vapor Canister, swapped it from a used car. From that point:
    1. Changed Evap Purge Valve
    2. Changed Secondary Air Injection Pump Hose with Vapor Canister Filter (was bulbing at the top of the rear driver side)
    3. Changed Vapor Canister with pressure switch.

    All these changes didn't helped to get rid of the incorrect flow issue. Accordingly, I registered at Audi to solve the problem.
    1. They inspected the system and changed Vacuum System Purge Valve with Hose Set.
    2. Updated ECU as there was a new software version from Audi.

    Now that seemed to solve the problem at that point, for one day. After that, I started getting three more faults:

    4105 - Bank 1; System too Lean at Idle 
    P2187 00 [101] 
    4007 - Idle Control System RPM 
    P0507 00 [038] - Higher than Expected.
    Accordingly, here is what we did further:
    1. Changed PCV valve (didn't helped)
    2. Audi inspected all the possible components for vacuum leak - everything seems tight.



    And after some time, old good friend EVAP appeared again.
    4219 - EVAP Emission Control Sys
    P0441 00 [096] - Incorrect Flow


    Specific issues
    What I started getting with these errors:
    1. Idle jumping from 650 to 950rpm with clima off
    2. When rpm sets in place, car shakes a bit, doesn't run perfectly smooth, even through rpm's are at one point.
    3. After filling a full tank, I need to spin on the starter for a few times in order to start the car for a first time. Further - no problems.
    4. System is running lean. Not 100% sure I am looking at the right values on UDS, but here they are:





    Next steps
    Audi offers me to change Vapor canister pressure switch and see whether it solves the issue. On the other hand, I already changed some working parts which in fact didn't solved the issue. Accordingly, I am looking for any other possible ways this could be INSPECTED FIRST, before changing parts.

    If I run Tank Ventilation Test in basic settings, it ends as Not OK.


    1. If it is EVAP causing this Leak in Air Intake and Lean at Idle, I am not sure where to dig further... Any ideas?
    2. Can it be failing oxygen sensors? Is there any chance to read their values and inspect the problem from them?
    3. Intake manifold?
    4. Fuel injectors?
    5. Somehow clogged/squeezed fuel lines at the top of the fuel tank?
    6. MAF? Tested it by running full throttle and values were in described range.

    What in particular to look for - the pressure it delivers or any manual inspection/check should be initiated?


    Overall, few other things I have in mind, simplified. Since there is an additive air/not enough fuel situation (at least errors direct towards this), I see two main reasons:
    1. Air is somewhere going into the system after the MAF, that way creating too much air dense mixture, which is not measured properly. This cause not enough fuel delivery, even though everything with fuel supply could be OK.
    2. There is a proper amount of air, no actual leaks, but with failure in fuel delivery, not enough fuel is passed into a mixture. Accordingly, ECU thinks there are too much air.

    Now with option one - it is most likely not the case, as no visible/noticeable/traceable leaks were found, no cracks, nothing. UNLESS this is something with intake manifold itself. What could be checked to make sure the intake is not failing in some fashion?

    Option 2 - not enough fuel. That way fuel delivery unit should create not sufficient pressure or there are not 100% bandwidth in fuel lines, etc?

    These are only my logical guesses, though... Does such presumptions make sense or I am missing something major?

    I don't see how too little fuel would cause a higher-than-commanded speed.

    Was the tank valve upgraded to the later part # & to work with the firmware update as per the TSB?

    False air leaks are easy to locate by isolation.

    Crimp off to correct the idle and then fix that zone.

    Verify TV and intake leaks directly by chemical identifier and water mist to induce misfire.

    Verify the PSI/vacuum of the block for proper switching not just the PCV.

    I have had the breather oil separator causing issues, is it worth trying a new one, because if that's faulty, you won't see any visible air leaks.
    Search for 06H 103 495AK and have a look at the item. It has been superseded so may be the older ones have a known issue.

    Jack - since the inspection and valve upgrade was made @ Audi, I would expect they did the best to make sure these aspects were covered...They used that chemical around all the possible junctions and not certain whether looking 2nd time myself could make it any better?

    Thanks, Gary. Breather oil separator aka PCV already replaced to the latest OEM part. Was expecting that red button could be the issue (https://youtu.be/hQEciqR1ST8?t=1m40s), but unfortunately - not.


    Taking another look into the P2279 documentation:
    Vacuum Leak- assuming this one is inspected with no prior leaks.
    Intake Manifold Runner Position out of Specification - is there any chance to diagnose this?
    Faulty Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) or Heating Element (N79) - PCV changed. What N79 stands for?


    The main reason why I expect this is something to be with tank/fuel delivery, is because of EVAP problems in the past, as well as not starting instantly after filling a full tank up to the click. And when it finally starts, it works rough and shaky. BUT it happens only on a first engine run after the fill. Here is the video:


    Also, just noticed one strange thing, which I haven't noticed while recording - take a look at a temperature gauge - I filled the tank after driving ~25km, so the engine was at full working temp. Why the gauge dropped down after going to its position? There is NO CHANCE it could cool down Maybe its another guide to follow, N79? Not sure at all what it could mean, though.

    Overall, I am just a regular guy, who likes to make some tweaks to the car by himself. Not that much experienced)

    Bullshit........ you sir...... are not a regular guy..... but I like your process!

    Okay I am in agreement that something is going on in tank and I would pump up the tank and crimp off the lines and then watch hold PSI.
    Then zone by zone verify what is permitting vapors to enter as a leak.

    I also think it could be compounded & that the block itself could be leaking air or vacuum or over vacuum from BVP on the mechanical not being limited through restrictive orifice and if it does will lose the vacuum needed to initiate the LDP functions or even a proper evap stream when N80 pulsed.

    Jack, thanks once again for your insights! At the moment I do not have availability to make mechanical inspection, accordingly, trying to clear all variables from the diagnostics side. I am with UDS, not that much easy like it would be with CAN measurement blocks, but well - I am trying

    Fuel Rail Pressure
    With temp over 80 degrees Celsius, no engine running, the fuel pressure goes from starting 40Mpa value up to 80Mpa in 3-4minutes. No problems with fuel pressure, right?


    Fuel trims with and without errors
    Even though I am not 100% certain whether I used proper trim data, these are quite self explanatory. The idea was to leave it on idle for some time, then apply the throttle and then keep it for idle. I wanted to see how the short/long term trims builds in two conditions. Firstly, with all the errors, then without.





    O2 oxygen values with P2279 and without
    I wanted to see how the oxygen sensor voltage builds in two conditions - when errors are already there and when ECU is building from the values of 0.




    UPDATED:
    Here are my insights/questions in regards to the data. As you can see, I applied throttle to indicate the changes in the system.
    1. When throttle applied, long term adaptation drops drastically, by 50%. This showcases a vacuum leak?
    2. With errors in the system, short term adaptation doesn't bounce too much. However, once cleared away, the movement of this value jumps significantly. In addition, why the long term adaptation goes to such high figures of >50%?
    3. O2 sensors in both cases are far from oscillation in a wave form. Is this is a result of vacuum leak as well? Have no idea about this. Maybe other values say something?
    4. What "leakage recognition from oxygen sensor control" value stands for? Couldn't find any reasonable information about this.


    Overall - I am not crazy! Just like to see the data in charts, rather than numbers. It might help to see something Thank you!
