Good morning,
Unfortunately for a few days my usb cable is not detected by the PC!
usb ports work because other devices are detected and working properly!
The light on the OBD lamp blinks for a green moment and then shuts off!
I have reinstalled several times usb drivers and VCDS 17.8 but with no positive results!

Interface UC150850 Rev. A

Regards.

Green for a moment and then off is the correct behavior for that Micro-CAN when it is only plugged into a computer and not into a car.

Have you tried a different PC?

Have you opened the interface to check for a broken wire from the USB cable inside?

With the Micro-CAN not plugged into the computer, open Device Manager. The plug the Micro-CAN into the computer. Does anything at all appear in Device Manager?

I asked three, specific, detailed questions.

You have not answered any of them.

A clue here maybe?

No because even installing drivers does not work! I've downloaded and reinstalled vcds version 17.8 several times and sometimes it worked but now no more!

Andrea: I think that Uwe's 3 x questions above are trying to establish if your problem lies in
  1. The PC - perhaps a problem caused by nanny ware? Have you tried hooking up the dongle to another windows PC?
  2. The VCDS dongle itself - perhaps a mechanical/connection problem with the OBD end of dongle (less likely)?
  3. The physical OBD port on the car - have you checked that the pins on the connector look OK? Perhaps try the dongle on another car

Don,

I don't think anything on the OBD-II side can cause the behavior being described.

^^^^ hmm........ OK. I think (hope) that this another instance where I can learn something new - always a good thing!

Uwe said: Green for a moment and then off is the correct behavior for that Micro-CAN when it is only plugged into a computer and not into a car."

Don concludes (incorrectly as it appears): The USB end of the dongle must be working OK because the dongle believes that it's connected to the PC, but doesn't believe that its connected to the car

Uwe said: I don't think anything on the OBD-II side can cause the behavior being described."

Don thinks: Why?

Don thinks: Why?
Because in the case of that style of Micro-CAN, the MCU in the interface is powered from the USB side. So it's getting power from the PC, booting up, then checking whether there's power on the car side, and since there isn't, it's turning off the LED, in order to make the LED's behavior mimic our other interfaces. In most of our other (legacy) interfaces, the MCU is powered by the car side and the LED won't even turn on unless there's power from the car.

Knowing that there's power from the PC means the USB power lines are intact. But it doesn't mean the data lines are intact, or that the FTDI chip in between the MCU and the USB data lines is.

FWIW, this particular Micro-CAN is 8-1/2 years old.

Is there any chance you have been using some sort of external power supply for your laptop? Perhaps one that plugs into the 12V cigarette lighter in your car?

Have you opened the interface yet and checked for broken wires at the end of the USB cable inside the interface? Have you checked continuity form inside the interface to the USB plug using an ohm meter?

Did it still work after that?

I would solder, not weld.

But in principle, yes, any USB plug/cable should work.

Whether that will actually fix the problem is, of course, another question.
