G85 Steering Angle Sensor locations in Golf-based Mk5 and Mk6 cars

This thread is intended to help sort out confusion about the location of G85 (and therefore applicable procedures for crash repairs and module replacements). Specifically in some Mk5/Mk6 based cars, there is a 44-Steering Assist module for electric power steering while others have a hydraulic power steering unit without electronics or integral sensors.

Some applicable Wiki pages:

The location of G85 in Mk5 and Mk6 Golf based vehicles depends primarily on the type of 03-ABS and 44-Steering assist systems that are installed. In some cases the installed 16-Steering Wheel Electronics module type in addition to the BCM/09-Central Electronics module is also relevant. I can't cover every possible scenario but these are some of the most common NAR market examples:

  1. 2005-2008 Jetta, Golf, Rabbit, Eos, Passat
  2. 2009 + Golf, Rabbit, Jetta, JSW, Eos
  3. 2011+ Golf, Rabbit, Jetta GLI, JSW, Eos
  4. 2011+ Jetta Sedan and 2012+ Beetle
  5. 2009+ VW Tiguan, 2009+ VW CC and 2010+ VW Passat

03/19/2021 Edit; We located 2 NAR market VW Tech Tips hosted on the NHTSA website that reference the part Steering Rack (ABS/ESP clarification) number differences. Some NAR market customers may find this information helpful:

The 44-Steering Assist module does NOT support an internal steering angle sensor. If you attempted to read Adaptation Channel 009: Steering Angle Sensor it would report error.
The 16-Steering Wheel electronics, Slip Ring and G85 sensor are all sold separately in this type of vehicle.

In this case G85 is located on the steering column behind the slip ring. If you needed to perform a calibration that would be done in the 03-ABS brake controller using this procedure: VW Golf (1K) Brake Electronics (MK60)

As of 2011+ the Golf, Jetta GLI (only), JSW and Eos models starting using 5K0 UDS protocol 16-Steering Wheel modules that may support an G85 internal sensor which is deactivated from the factory. Like the 2010 example above, this vehicle still uses a Generation 3 steering rack in addition to MK60EC1 ABS brakes.

This example is nearly identical to the 2010 GTI in post #3 in regards to the Component: ESP MK60EC1 ABS with a Gen 3 Steering rack Labels: 1K0-909-14x-GEN3.clb.
The 44-Steering Assist module supports an internal steering angle sensor. If you read Adaptation Channel 009: Steering Angle Sensor it would report the stored value of 0 = Internal Steering Angle Sensor active.

The major difference is found in address 16-Steering Wheel.
  • The Slip Ring is part of the 5K0-953-569 part number series 16-Steering Wheel module and some support an internal sensor which would not be enabled from the factory in this vehicle configuration. When the factory installed 16-Steering Wheel module is replaced it needs to be coded properly for G85 functionality.
  • Replacements should be ordered by VIN but the 5K0-953-569 section on this page should add clarity to the part numbers that do and do not support an internal G85 sensor: Steering Wheel Control Module Versions
  • Incorrect coding in a replacement 16-Steering Wheel module may prevent you from calibrating G85 in addition to causing functionality issues such an no horn, wipers, MFSW buttons, CCS and similar.

Even though G85 is located in the steering rack you would perform a calibration in the MK60EC1 ABS control module using this page: VW Golf (1K) Brake Electronics (MK60EC1)

2011+ Jetta Sedan and 2012+ Beetle

Vehicles such as the 2011+ Mk6 VW Jetta Sedan (16/AJ) (GLI excluded) and the 2012+ VW Beetle (5C/AT) do NOT use a 16-Steering Wheel module in the NAR market. These vehicles are easily identified by Components such as PQ25 BCM and BCM25.

To complicate matters some vehicles use a fully mechanical Hydraulic Steering system (PR-Code 1N1) and some use the Electro-Mechanical steering system (PR-Code 1N3) which includes 44-Steering Assist.

G85 can be wired directly to the PT Databus with functions such as MFSW controls handled through the Address 09-Central Electronics module -or- activated in the 44-Steering Assist module.

This partial scan example is from a base model 2014 Jetta S:

That Jetta uses Component: ESP MK60EC1 ABS with 1N1 Power steering meaning the steering rack does NOT communicate via diagnostics. This is the basic Hydraulic steering system similar to the 1998-2005 era Mk4 vehicles.

G85 is located in the Slip Ring
This car does NOT have a 16-Steering Wheel electronics module
This car does NOT have a 44-Steering Assist module

You would perform the G85 calibration in the MK60EC1 ABS control module using this page: VW Golf (1K) Brake Electronics (MK60EC1)

The Jetta SE uses Component: ESP MK60EC1 ABS with 1N3 Speed-related variable steering assist (Servotronic) so it has a Gen 3 Steering rack Labels: 1K0-909-14x-GEN3.clb.

The 44-Steering Assist module supports an internal steering angle sensor that would be activated from the factory.
If you read Adaptation Channel 009: Steering Angle Sensor it would report the stored value of 0 = Internal Steering Angle Sensor active.

G85 is NOT located in the Slip Ring
This car does NOT use a 16-Steering Wheel electronics module

You would perform the G85 calibration in the MK60EC1 ABS control module using this page: VW Golf (1K) Brake Electronics (MK60EC1)

2009+ VW Tiguan, 2009+ VW CC and 2010+ VW Passat

Although the exact production splits vary 2009+ VW Tiguan (5N/AX), 2009+ VW CC (35/AN) and 2010+ VW Passat (3C/AN) models typically use 5N1 part number 44-Steering Assist modules.

The LHD VW Passat appears to split 1K and 5N rack types during production at: June, 30 2009

5N1 part number steering racks with Component J500 do NOT support an internal Steering Angle Sensor.

RoW market RHD Passat models use 1K0 (Gen3 ZF) steering racks per the contributions from golfi_vend in post #6.

To complicate matters:
VW CC (35/AN) and VW Passat (3C/AN)
  • Models built before October, 31st 2009 use the older CAN protocol 16-Steering Wheel module.
  • Models built after November, 1st 2009 use the UDS protocol 16-Steering Wheel module.
VW Tiguan (5N/AX)
  • Models build before May, 30th 2010 use the older CAN protocol 16-Steering Wheel module.
  • Models build after May, 31th 2010 use the UDS protocol 16-Steering Wheel module.

This 2012 Tiguan uses the newer UDS protocol 16-Steering Wheel module. The steering angle sensor and slip ring are sold as one integrated component which is the 16-Steering Wheel control module. When it is replaced the coding needs to be performed before G85 calibration is possible. This is similar to the Golf R example in post #4.

G85 is calibrated in the 03-ABS module using the procedure on this page: VW Tiguan (5N) Brake Electronics

This 2009 Passat uses the older CAN protocol 16-Steering Wheel module. In this case G85 is located on the steering column behind the slip ring. The 16-Steering Wheel electronics, Slip Ring and G85 sensor are all sold separately in this type of vehicle. This is similar to the Passat example in post #2.

Since this is the newer Passat with 5N1 part number steering rack and C4 ABS, G85 is calibrated in the 03-ABS module using the procedure on the same page as our 2012 Tiguan example above: VW Tiguan (5N) Brake Electronics
