VW EPA Fix - Does this affect VCDS software?

I am considering taking my 2011 VW Jetta Sportwagen in for the USA EPA settlement repair. Will the VCDS software function in a similar manner as prior to the EPA fix. More specifically, I have used VCDS to adjust the speedometer and odometer after installing VW Passat 18 inch tires and wheels which have a larger circumference than the original 17 inch tires.. I also turned off the Tire Pressure monitoring system since the wheels are missing the tire pressure sensors. Also, I turned off the seat belt chime. After undergoing the VW dealer EPA repair, will I be able to use VCDS again to make these adjustments to the ECM?

The bigger question you should be asking yourself is hat effect will the new firmware have on the reliability of your EGR valve - many users have seen early EGR failures after having the firmware updated, which VW are in some cases denying liability or responsibility for.

None of those adjustments are in the ECM. They are all in other modules. ;)

Yes, VCDS will still work with all the other modules as before. Chances are good it will also still work with the ECM, but on some occasions, VW has used new ASAM names for the ECM software involved in the "fix" and it takes us a bit of time to get caught up with that.

In some ways, I'm with PetrolDave -- very skeptical about this "fix". But if you go ahead with it, please do an Auto-Scan before and another after and post both here so we can see exactly what they changed -- particularly if you have a DSG tranny; I'm curious if that gets updated as part of the "fix".

Hello Dave, Thanks for bringing that up. If the EGR valves become an issue, there is always the option of removing the EGR valves, exhaust gas cooler and DPF. I have wanted to do that anyways. If there becomes a reliability issue with the emissions equipment it would be an excuse to remove all of it, Do the stage 1 or 2 ECU flash and enjoy increased efficiency and fuel mileage. I have never been a fan of recirculating exhaust back into the engine or spraying fuel into the exhaust. That always seemed counter productive.

Hello Uwe, I stopped at the dealer to ask some questions and within a few minutes the emissions modification was in process. I did not really intend to go through with it, but they made it so easy. As it turned out, I am actually happy with how it turned out. It appears that the few settings I had changed using the VAG COM software are all still as they were. The biggest concern was that the speedometer would read too low since I have switched from 17 inch wheels to the VW Passat 18 inch wheels and tires. I had changed one of the digits in the Engine Module from a 7 to a 1 and that seemed to adjust the parameters such that the speedometer was reading accurately with the 18 inch tires.
After the modification it appears that the area where I had adjusted that is not accessible any longer, but the adjusted setting is still adjusted so that is fine. I have owned the car about two years and it has never run as well as it does now after the modification. It has noticeably more power and the DSG tends to want to stay in 6th gear on hills longer than it did before. I really like how it runs now after the modification. Tomorrow I will try to upload the before and after Auto Scan log. My previous Auto Scan was from March 2017 but I don't think much changed from then until yesterday when the modification was completed.

You are the only person I've so far seen comment that the EPA fix has made their car run better! Keep an eye out for possible EGR issues, that seems to be made to operate much more after the fix and hence becomes unreliable leading to DTCs, limp mode and EGR failure.

You don't upload Auto-Scans, you copy the text file and then paste it inline between CODE tags.

OK, so the ECU software part number changed from 03L 906 019 DB to 03L 997 030 B.

TCU software part number did not change, but software version changed from 2705 to 9334.

I really doubt this change was in your ECM; instead I'd expect it to be in your Instrument Cluster, specifically the "Distance Impulse Number" bits in the Cluster's coding.

As for your ECM, try this:
Go to the Labels folder, generally C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS\Labels\
Locate the file 03L-906-022-CBE.clb
Make a copy of it.
Rename that copy to: 03L-997-030-B.CLB

That should give you back the labels for your ECM until we get a proper redirect implemented for the new part number.

I was hoping to get you info on post-fix 2009 TDI.

however the DSG software update (required to modify shift behavior as part of the fix) would not complete on my car or on other 2009 MY TDI cars.

so my car sits at the dealer lot, and I am stuck driving a gasser CC until they figure out how to complete the "fix" on my car.

the car sits under a tree, target for local birds, and occasionally washed by the dealer staff
