Hey guys,
I'm new to vcds and I'm trying to troubleshoot a few issues I'm having with my car. About a month ago my key fob stopped working and I set the alarm off on my vehicle. I'm trying to clear the codes in block 46 so that I can program a new remote and turn the alarm off. When I go to adaptation it will not allow me to enter a new value for the new remote. I've attached an autoscan so you guys can see what I'm dealing with. I noticed some pooling of water by my CCM but it doesn't appear to have made it to the module. I'm also new to the forum so if I'm posting in the wrong spot or breaking any general rules please let me know and I'll make sure it doesn't happen again. Thankyou

I've talked to a few others with these issues on their A4 and it seems all of them replaced the CCM to deal with the issue. I can get one for $30 so maybe that's the route I'll have to take unless somebody has a suggestion.

Can you even start the car at all? Or have you been playing with VCDS all day and flattened your battery? Either way I think you need to connect a charger and deep recharge your battery - or replace it.

Uwe/Eric: 08:51 seems very slow on this type of car too?

Yes I can start the car. You're right about the battery. The past few weeks when I start it you can tell the juice is getting low. That being said i had been plugging away on vcds for a while. I don't think that time is accurate. The scan itself took about 3 or so minutes.

Nah, a 2002 A4 has no GVL and it's all K-Line; no CAN diagnostics at all. That means VCDS has to try the address of every module that might conceivably be in the car.

The way to fix this on a personal car once one has figured out what's actually in it is to make a custom entry for that car in the MyAutoScan.txt file.

-Uwe-

PS: Since the OP is now Verified, I'm moving this to Car Repair Support.

Both good bits of info, thanks guys. I did attempt to go through the adaptation process in channel 21 but I haven't done anything related to coding yet. I wouldn't know what to add or remove. I did snag the code for block 46 in case I get a new module.

OP welcome to the VCDS forum.......

You must first fix the K line issue and correct the single wire mode first before you can play remotes.

Second you may want to investigate the door harness in the drivers door or lock module for being faulty and the CCM for water ingress!

Time to RTFB and observe the WD while using the JPPSG.

Thanks Jack. I will pull the door panel tomorrow and have a look at the door harness. Should I be checking under the grommet in door jamb for a pinched or split wire? Pardon my ignorance but what do you mean by the K line issue? The CCM was in a box and doesn't appear to have gotten wet. No noticeable corrosion either. Thanks for your help.

Pulled the door card off. Inspected and wiggled all the connections and the wires for any damage and found nothing. There's one clip unplugged and a set of 4 wires cut. I believe the clip is from the factory speaker and the wires went to the factory tweeter which are both gone. I looked in the door jamb under the rubber grommet and found no broken wires or anything suspect. Could it just be a bummed CCM causing this issue? I did have water under the carpet but the CCM was bone dry when I pulled it out of the box. No corrosion on any pins. Can the CCM fail just due to age? Once it stops raining I'll do a more complete job tracing the wires back to the interior. Thanks guys.

Please see the WD and trace all the components.

K line is a communication line and CAN W High and Low are internal bus.

This car could have more than one K line.

Driver door open or closed?
Driver door will not lock if opened (safety feature)
If it won't lock closed wiring or door latch module.

good luck

I did a few scans but I believe this particular one was with my door open. The car has had an aftermarket stereo since I've owned it. I will try to track down a wiring diagram and trace them back from the door to their source. Thanks guys

There is no mention of a radio or RNS-E at addresses 37 & 56 - these use the K2 (or L) line on an 8E chassis.
I don't think the RNS-E existed in 2002.

Only 8Es with a heavy equipment load have a K2 line. Cars with lesser equipment have 56-Radio on K1. I went through all of the cars I could find on my local dealer's lot with a VAG-1552 and VAS-6017 to find one with two K-lines back in the fall of 2001. I'm not sure it's 100% indicative, but the strongest correlation I could find was whether the car had Xenons or not.

I pulled everything apart under the carpet and checked every wire individually and found nothing. I'm able to get a replacement CCM for $30 from a buddy so I'm going to try swapping it out regardless and see if that gets me anywhere. I noticed I left a few fuses out on my last scan so I replaced the fuses and hooked up the CCM for a complete scan and have more errors than the initial scan. I hooked up a multi-meter to my battery before and after the scan (before 12.53V after 12.16V) yet on my scan it says the battery went down to 9.5V. I should mention when I went to start the car after the scan it was very hesitant. I'm out of my element when it comes to electrical so if the new CCM and digging around doesn't get my anywhere then its going to a shop.

The DVM readings were taken no-load, with the ignition off, right?

The voltages VCDS shows for start and end of scan are with under load, ignition on...

I'm thinking the battery in this car is darn close to shot.

Would it be odd that the battery went down to 9.5V during the scan yet popped back up to 12.16V after shutting things off without running the car? I would have assumed it would have stayed at 9.5V until i turned it over...but assumptions haven't gotten me anywhere lol and yes, the readings i took on the battery were under no load.

Odd? No, I wouldn't think it's odd if the battery is on its last legs. How old is it?

OP

Before condemning the battery......... trickle charge it.
Then see if the charging system is properly grounded and that the alternator is putting out what it should back to the battery and that it can cover the function of all accessories.

Alternator freewheel friction clutches often take a shit ..........in addition to maybe belt slip.

I see your LDP and EVAP are not ready here .....have you checked as to why or run these tests?
