Hi All,
I've only had my HEX-V2 (3 VIN) and VCDS for 2 days and still not sure if I'm using the software correctly.
My VCDS is registered, validated and updated and as yet I've not been requested to register one of my VIN.

I purchased the cable because a friend advised me that I should have done an adaptations reset and TBA
following a MAF sensor change in February. To be honest the MAF certainly improved the engine performance
but also made the erratic/inconsistent auto gearshifts more noticeable.

I initially tried to do the adaptations on the 02 Auto Trans but that box is greyed out, then tried to do the
adaptations on 01 Engine but only got error messages. I assumed this was due to not having an associated
label file for the engine and have since sent Ross-Tech my control module map files.
My next train of thought was to select basic settings for both engine and auto transmission but once again these
boxes are greyed out.

Any help or advice would be really appreciated.

Below is a copy of my latest auto scan results, just a few minor issues but nothing
engine or auto transmission related except for missing label files. Would these missing
label files be the root cause of not being able to run adaptations or basic settings?

Hi All,
I've only had my HEX-V2 (3 VIN) and VCDS for 2 days and still not sure if I'm using the software correctly.

Your friend wants you to do a TAB on a diesel engine, eh? ;)

Lack of a label file won't prevent you from doing the things that the ECU is capable of doing, but that 2005 diesel doesn't have a throttle in the traditional sense.

There are definitely some basic settings available in your engine. Are you trying to go from Measuring Blocks directly to Basic Settings? That doesn't work with the KWP-2000 protocol your ECU uses. You must go to directly Basic Settings from this screen:

open-screen.png

Your ECU does support Basic Settings for EGR and Boost Pressure Regulation, but I wouldn't advise running them willy-nilly. In fact, the Basic Settings page of the VCDS Manual warns:

Warnings:

  • You should refer to the Factory Repair Manual for your particular car (or some other documented procedure) before "playing" with the ]Basic Settings function. Failure to follow the proper procedures can result in serious damage to the vehicle.
  • Although you can use the [Up] and [Dn] buttons to scroll through the available groups just like on the Measuring Blocks screen, this is probably not a good idea since you may put the Controller into Basic Settings for a Group that you did not intend.

As for your transmission shifting erratically, at 165,000 miles it doesn't really owe you much. When was the last time it had a fluid change? Basic Settings in it are documented. It's a two-step process. Group 001 first, then Group 002.

Thanks Uwe,
My mate definitely recommended an adaptations reset and a "TBA check would'nt hurt".
I must admit that I have been trying to select basic settings from the measuring blocks directly
as this method was detailed on the Ross Tech website for KWP-2000 protocol and applies to my
vehicle. I'll try selecting basic settings 04 tomorrow as its rather late here in UK now. My intention
is to apply basic stock settings as I'm not a fan of overclocking or "playing" with boost pressure/EGR
settings.
Thanks again for your help and rapid reply and I apologise for my lack of knowledge in this field, this
is not my area of expertise but it intrigues me none the less.

BTW, automatic transmission fluid and filter was been changed 8 months ago and again 2 months /3000 miles later.

Have you got a link to the page where it suggests doing it that way on KWP-2000? 'Cause I don't see it.

Good. On many automatics, VW claims it's not necessary to change the fluid and that it's a "lifetime fill". What they don't tell you is that the lifetime of the trans will generally be longer with regular fluid changes.

I stand corrected, I've been trying to use the wrong procedure for my drive
by wire Caravelle. Correct procedure below.

Drive-by-Wire (DBW) Engines using KWP-2000 or CAN
(These are engines WITHOUT a physical cable between the accelerator and the throttle. Check to see if the engine speaks KWP-2000 or CAN by looking in the top left of the Open Controller Screen. An example of a KWP-2000 engine controller is the 2002+ B6 Audi A4 1.8T. Some examples of CAN engine controllers are the Mk5 Golf 2.0T FSI)

Turn the key on but do not start the car.
[Select]
[01 - Engine]
[Basic Settings - 04]
Group 060
[Go!]
It should say "Basic Settings: OFF" on the top of your screen.
Click [ON/OFF/Next] to turn on Basic Settings.
It should now say "Basic Settings: ON" on the top of your screen. Once you do this you will see the top right display say ADP RUN. The TB adaptation is being done as soon as you switched basic settings on. You will see the values change and hear the TB cycle for the first few seconds then it will stop. Leave it in Basic Settings for about 30 seconds.
Click [ON/OFF/Next] to turn off Basic Settings.
It should now say "Basic Settings: OFF" on the top of your screen
Click the [Done, Go Back] button and you're all set.
Be sure not to touch the accelerator and make sure the engine is NOT running when you do this!

If it did not complete, or resulted in Error, see the Special Notes below.

Right.

But keep in mind, this is for Petrol engines and is not applicable to any diesel.

Because diesel engines don't have a throttle body... their "performance" is controlled by the amount and timing of fuel injected not by throttling the passage of air into the engine.

Thanks guys, as I said "not my area of expertise".
The internet and VCDS has certainly enlightened me to diesel technology over the last few days.
Hopefully I'll get a chance to try your recommendations tomorrow.
In the meantime, I'm off to see the Undertones play at a local music festival.
Thanks again.

Late-model diesels actually do have air-throttling capabilities. They need this to prevent excessive amounts of air in the combustion chamber (which is replaced by recirculated exhaust gasses) in order to limit NOx formation.

But they still don't do a TBA using Basic Settings Group 060 like the older petrol engines did. :)
