I brought my 2006 A8L in for a groaning steering wheel sound... the sound only occurs when the engine is at idle. After some diagnostic work, my best guess was that the steering pump was a little weak? Purchased a used steering pump from Wolf Auto for $89 (local Audi Dealer wanted $900). Independent shop that replaced my leaking steering rack a few months back did the re & re of the steering pump and found that it did not address the groaning sound at all. So with more stethoscope type diagnostics, they determined that one of the tie-rod ends was the source of the groaning. Tell tale sign was a ripped outer boot. Ordered new part, installed, new alignment... the groaning steering sound is gone and the car drives nice.
But noticed that the ESP light was staying ON. Called the shop, they said maybe the steering angle sensor needs re-calibration... which I had to do the last time they did an alignment when they did the steering rack. I pulled out my laptop and ran a VCDS scan, the steering angle sensor seemed to be at 0.0 degrees at center, but I tried to re-calibrate it anyways, but would not allow that function to work, it was kicking out an error? Also I found a ton of new fault codes, many of which were probably due to a low battery voltage situation. So I cleared all of the codes, drove the car around the block... all of the low voltage type codes went away... but unfortunately, there were quite a handful of new codes that were not there before I brought the car in for the steering pump/tie-rod repair (I did a scan the night before I brought it in and saved the logs).
Here is what I'm seeing from VCDS now, please note some of the Engine codes were there before, including the Engine Mount Solenoid Valve codes, but all of the EVAP, MAF, Sec Air, ABS/ESP faults are new.
What I'm most concerned about is the Control Module Defective code in the 03 ABS section.
