I have recently completed a retrofit of the RNS 510 (1T0 035 686 E), 9WZ bluetooth unit (3C8 035 730 D) and upgraded the CAN gateway (7N0 907 530 M). Everything is working nicely now except for some minor details, mfsw being one of them.

The car is a 2005 Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TDi with the red MFD and 2005.5 style mfsw buttons. The vol+ and vol- buttons have always worked and still do, but the prev track and next track buttons do not... well, sort of. If I tick both "Shortpress Steering Wheel Buttons Installed" and "Communication Instrument Cluster via Operation and Display Protocol (BAP)" in VCDS then the buttons will work, but I loose the highline display so that is not an option. Also, going to the Audio menu on the display and using the wiper stalker buttons to change tracks - as I have seen suggested other places - appears to do nothing under any circumstances.

However, if I do a cold boot or reset ( < + > + star) on the head unit and wait until the music starts playing I am able to use prev track and next track as normal for about a minute. After that they are back to not functioning. I noticed that they stopped working at the exact same moment as my MFD started displaying the compass etc. Any advise on how I can get these buttons working permanently without enabling BAP?

Anyone? Something that can be done using VCDS? Upgrading the steering wheel control module?

Are the 2005.5 style buttons even fully compatible with rns510?

I do not know. What confuses me is that it does work in the moments after the RNS 510 is booted and then stops at the time when I think the unit is fully initialized. Could some coding error cause this behavior?

Also, I found this thread which seems to describe a problem very similar to mine, but at least he was able to change tracks with the rocker switch at the end of the wiper stalk.

Your cluster is too old.
I know is sound strange, but cluster transmitt MF options to other controler such as Radio
1K0 920 871 B - you need younger since 1K0 920 873 or 874 or any since 2007 ->

You also should use hard button MFSW MK5 or Mk6
Some people dont undesrand "DIY rules.
They think if can install radio from 2009 to car from 2004/5 all will work, but in a fact - doesnt
If that will be soo easy, VW will made only one MFSW and one SWCM, Gateway etc.
With some reason - they made lot of updates , gues why ;)

I actually made some progress with this. BAP has been disabled all along and for some reason I thought the "Shortpress steering wheel buttons" needed to stay enabled. While playing with this today I disabled the "Shortpress steering wheel buttons" and now I get almost the same behavior as described in the thread I linked to in my previous post; mfsw buttons for volume, mute and source works, mfsw buttons for phone and track does not work, but I am able to change the track/radio station etc. from the rocker switch when I am in the "Audio" or "Navigation" menu.

I do believe you when you say this is related to the cluster and I realize that what I now have seems to be as close as you can get with the 2005.5 style mfsw. Still that does not explain why the mfsw track buttons does work the first minute or so after the unit is turned on.

So, apparently the problem stems from the revision number of the RNS 510 and possibly the revision number of the bluetooth module. Check and see what you have.

This comes from BarryT82 on golfmkv forum:

"You have to have a version E or above RNS-510 and a 9w7 with SW 27xx or above to change songs. For voice command you need SW 2902 or above on the Bluetooth module. Did you buy the voice command Bluetooth harness or non voice command? It's a simple mode to make it work."

My bluetooth module meets these criteria but the RNS unit I bought does not. Not real happy with my purchase now :(

Rns firmware updates are freely available on the internet.
Just upgrade it to latest making sure you get the appropriate version for your unit eg Europe or North America

I was led to believe that certain RNS510 lettered revisions are only firmware-upgradable to a certain point. I have a revision C RNS510 and I think the latest supported firmware number for C is 1140 or something, several updates behind the minimum 27xx firmware number. Am led to believe that the minimum firmware number starts to be supported at the E lettered RNS revision.

I'm taking all of that on the word of someone else though, so I can't be sure. Maybe Vasco will upgrade his firmware and let us know if it works.

The ability to "enable firmware downgrade" through the head unit setup menu leads me to believe that some firmware numbers are incompatible or troublesome with certain head unit revisions. This is purely speculative though.

I wont be testing this out because I already ordered the most recent RNS 510 revision. Hoping the SSD improves the very slow boot times I'm experiencing now (after turning on the vehicle I have to wait ~90 seconds before I can put it in reverse and see the backup camera).

i have personally used it on many devices including A & B revions, of course as always there is a certain risk of bricking device, so risk is all yours :)

The version numbers between North America and Europe are not similar.
Version 1140 I think is the latest for NA whereas 6276 is the lastest for Europe/Rest of World.

Maybe Vasco will upgrade his firmware and let us know if it works.

I will indeed let us all know if it worked as expected.

The problem (ok, not a problem) is that I received the radio yesterday and I am going to vacations this Thursday.

From my experience I tend to break clips when doing something in a rush. I hate to break things just because I am in a rush or didn't do the homework.

So I will probably just do my retrofit on the 8th/9th of July :)

Well, I was very impatient to test it so I managed to get some free time today.

I was able dismantle radio console without damage

So, in short, everything worked like a charm.

Even though knowing that the protocol used in the instruments cluster is DDP I was able to get the name of the music playing in the MFD.

I consider this a bonus as I was not expecting to get this function working. The RCD300 was not able to transmit songs name to the cluster. Just a "Track N" was displayed.

Also, volume, mute(star), menu, OK and up/down buttons are working as expected. The behaviour was similar when the RCD300 radio was installed.
Telephone button is disabled because I don't have the BT module. Again, the behaviour was similar when the RCD300 radio was installed.

I didn't test the battery drain... And I am not testing it today just by leaving the radio over night. I need the car tomorrow and I don't want to waste 100€ in a new battery. So the battery drain issue will be be tested when I came back from vacations.

Also, I can make a detailed guide with GW, radio, instruments cluster parts numbers and sw/hw revisions.

Thank you so much for your help.
